You made videos about 2 of the most loved IDM(EDM) and "warp" label musicians, aphex twin and squarepusher, it would be super cool too see a video about my favorite band of all times Boards Of Canada. They are 2 brothers who make this super awesome type of psychedelic, nostalgic, mysterious blend of hip hop, edm and experimental eletronic that is heavily inspired in the 70's decade and the aesthetic of old educational tv programs and documentaries. They are in the same records label as squarepusher and aphex twin and are also know as one of the pioneers and legends of IDM.

the whole album is terrific. growing up in the 90s in germany, the amounts of cheap euro dance and pop techno (anybody remember DJ bobo, scooter, ...?) everywhere was repulsively mind-numbing. electronic music like this, aphex twin, venetian snares, etc, barging in was really exhiliarating

This guy was a contemporary of Richard D James, aka Aphex Twin. Both did wonderfully creative things with electronic music

First Pusher song I ever heard, and still pretty much my favorite. The processing of that James Brown break is absolutely masterful and is something I haven't been able to match despite 20 years of programming breaks.

The drum beat is sampled from Soul Pride (Parts 1 And 2) · James Brown · The James Brown Band from 1969. The drummer's name is Clyde Stubberfield. Squarepusher sampled and edited the drum break to the next dimension. There is also a drum machine layered on top of the drum sample which sounds similar to a Roland TR-909. It's sad that you didn't react to one of Squarepusher's tunes that showcase his live bass playing. This track is amazing however it doesn't showcase his more complex composing abilities.

Warp Records stuff is one of the holy grails of electronic music. The biggest artists that were associated with the regretfully named "IDM" genre on the label were Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid, and Squarepusher. The term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) was coined in the US for music being made by these artists but they themselves did not associate with the term (Aphex Twin openly rejected it coining the genre name "Braindance" for his own record label Rephlex). I think it's important to point this out considering the immense influence things like Detroit Techno (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, Underground Resistance) and Chicago House (Mr. Fingers, Phuture, Adonis) have had on these artists. I could see you appreciating some of the more ambient techno leaning stuff on Warp as well like The Black Dog, B12, Richard H. Kirk, LFO, and the entire Artificial Intelligence series of albums (of which Aphex Twin (as Polygon Window), Autechre, and Plaid (as members of Black Dog Productions) were a part of). There seem to be a lot of people on here suggesting that you check out Autechre and I think it's worth noting that they have many different sounds and innovations that span their catalog so there are going to be some vast differences between releases. While I think you should definitely check out their early ambient techno leaning stuff like Incunabula and Amber I think that for the purposes of this channel you should use a track from the period when they most definitively innovated composition using generative techniques in Max/MSP. The polarizing album Confield from 2001 is when they fully committed to this sound and I think the track "Bine" showcases it the most with it's constantly morphing meters and polyrhythms.

Wow, I can't believe you've got to Hard Normal Daddy already!! Incredible album. I rented the cassette tape from the library (!) when it came out purely because of the name and cover art, and it's probably not an exaggeration to say it changed my life.

Tom Jenkinson formed a live band called Shobaleader One to perform some of his Squarepusher works - you should definitely check them out. It's amazing how they take the original material and make it sound so organic (although that's maybe also testament to the musicality of his electronic compositions)

This is good shit dude! Love seeing the ole' jazz virtuoso legend, Tom Jenkinson (a.k.a. Squarepusher), being shown some love on KZfaq. Tom is most definitely classically trained, but more than anything, he's a jazz player.

Please please do more Squarepusher. I believe these tracks showcase his most interesting and complex compositional skills: Come on my selector Squarepusher theme Port rhombus Ultravisitor Dissolver Go! Spastic Tetra-Sync Tundra 4 Keep in mind he cuts each individual drum hit and sequences them separately, rather than relying on whole break loops as most do. Which is very impressive as often times it does sound live, but he is also a great live drummer. Dissolver is from an album where he composed music for a Japanese robot band and it is incredible, would love to hear your thoughts.

Squarepusher is Tom Jenkinson. He also plays bass. A lot of tracks from this album he now plays live with a band They are called Shobaleader One.

Yes! Squarepusher’s Discog is well worth diving into. It’s such an enormously varied body of work. Quick recommendation… His track ‘Tundra 4’ is one of the most brilliant pieces of music i’ve ever clapped ears on.

That weird sound where it’s like he’s stretching the snare, that is called a “snare rush.” Aphex Twin and him are the masters of that. Wow. So you’ve done Aphex Twin. Now Squarepusher. They’re both madmen and their catalogs are absolutely packed with great stuff of extremely different styles. Boards Of Canada’s “a beautiful place in the country” is also late 90’s EDM, same label (Warp) but they use tape effects - like literal tape effects, I think you’ll really appreciate.

Tom Jenkinson is one of the electronic music greats, along with Richard D. James and Arron Funk. If you liked this song, there is a treasure trove waiting for you in the rest of his discography.

So glad you've chosen to feature Squarepusher, he's easily my favourite musician. Hard to believe, but many if his tunes were produced in the 90s on quite rudimentary equipment. If you find time to explore his other music, I'd suggest Squarepusher Theme, Come on My Selector or E8 Boogie.

Oh and Squarepusher might be "EDM" but the guy is an absolute beast on the bass, true instrumentalist.

There is no-one in electronic music who can do percussion like Squarepusher. No matter how fast, layered or glitchy it gets it always feels human, that there is someone with a pulse directly creating the performance. All other drums in other edm tracks sound cold and mechanical in comparison.

his little brother andy jenkins also makes music, he releases sorta idm/drum and bass/ambientish stuff under the name "ceephax" and really incredible acid house under the name ceephax acid crew, highly recommend. what's especially impressive about him is he plays the acid house stuff live, with all this vintage roland equipment hooked up via control voltage, which can cause his shows to fall apart in REALLY interesting ways. no idea what the heck was in the water where they grew up, but they really got some talent in taht family lol

Lead/bass synth are the beat and the drums are the voice. That is how Squarepusher works. The drums do the singing. Also the amen break is prevalent in a lot of break beat. The drum sample you are hearing in this song is likely the amen break sliced up and reordered. There is a great video on youtube exclusively about the amenbreak. Check it out!

From 1997. I’ve never heard this. It still sounds more or less current. It’s near the end of the early techno and jungle scene but still early for Drum’n’bass, which relies on jazz scales and baselines. The drum loop is one of about 5 almost identical drum phrases collectively known as ‘funky drummer’ by the James Brown song the defacto loop is known for, used in most dnb tracks (which I think this is) as well as Prodigy music. This is after after Feed Me Weird Things (96). Which is the one I know. He’s very close to Aphex Twin but a lot more beat oriented and soft. This is softer than his first album maybe. It reminds me also of Four Tet. Video games music = Hudson Mowhawk who scored Watch Dogs 2. The Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory soundtrack by Amon Tobin (el cargo) is very interesting.

Squarepusher - Tundra is also one of the best tracks he's ever created.

I remember arguing with a friend on how he thought music like this was made. He kept thinking it was all automatic or presets for the drums and I kept reiterating nothing about Squarepusher is automatic. When I showed him how I wrote songs using FruityLoops he sorta got it but refused to give it any credit. This was also around 2002 so hopefully he can appreciate it now but I guess there’s some people who think writing this stuff is easy…it’s far from easy.

Squarepusher and a few others are a MILE above most of the commercial stuff that fits in a genre.. There's probably some PD,Nuendo,CSound/Max,etc.etc type stuff going on. I had met someone who knows Jenkinson personally and according him, he's mathematical ,innovative and a virtuoso bass player who ended up leaving the constrictions of commercial jazz...

Please do E8 Boogie from the same album as well, it's the funkiest, most complex electronic track of all time 🙏

If you want something a bit more up tempo and aggressive from Squarepusher then try "Come on my selector" for the Big loada EP. It's fast, furious and hardcore.

That track is really good, but you definitely should've been checking out his Planetarium track. From a melodic standpoint this track is outstandind, he's a truly awesome melodist

this track samples the Soul Pride breakbeat, so called because it is sampled from the James Brown song of the same name. chopped up and rearranged organically. Squarepusher has always existed on the outskirts of jungle/drum and bass, where the sampling of James Brown drum breaks is very common. Funky Drummer, Soul Pride, Cold Sweat, Hot Pants, etc

Subgenre is called "drill n bass" on account of the drum samples sometimes being so fast that they sound like drills. Richard D James and Kirlian Selections are key albums in that style I would say.

NMesh would be an interesting artist to try out. His style is a mix of Breakbeat, Vaporwave, Plunderphonics, Jungle, and Ambient. His samples reach from the 30s to the early 90s. He utilizes all of that media from that 60 year gap, like PSAs, Pop records, commercials, films, and many other sample sources to create this dream like vibe that can feel like a hardcore fever dream at times, especially in his Pharma record. I would suggest you start with his groovier stuff like Climbing the Corporate Ladder, N_1_N_1, Bass Corp, Keep This, Dream Sequins, and High Speed Automatic Boiler. That last one is on the shorter end, but it’s still a bop even if it is only using a sample from The Price is Right.
