In this multi-episode docu-series (part 1) we dive into the fact that at one point, Saints Row was one of the most popular open world games in the entire world. So, where did it all go wrong? Mismanagement? Lack of direction? Lack of identity? Today we embark on the journey exploring just how Saints Row lifted to the top until inevitably crashing down to the floor (PART 1, SAINTS ROW 1).

Saints Row 1 and 2 were a revelation in terms of open world city gameplay. they revolutionized so much like weapon wheel along with free aim and sr2 coop was beyond incredible times. Nothing ever got close to those games when they released.

Sr1 and 2 are the peak of the series. Moving away from the semi wacky but mostly serious tone was a big mistake. They should’ve stayed with Stillwater, kept the street gangs but move them in from steelport instead of moving them to steelport. I loved the serious tone of the boss in 2. It was amazing

1 was hardcore gangster street stuff and 2 kinda moved the needle making the gangs more unique but it was so amazing. 2 is no doubt one of the best games of the era. Waaaay ahead of its time.

I feel like saints row 3 should’ve been about ending the dex arc. That way they would’ve had the perfect opportunity to make a new city and map, while also bringing in new gangs. I do agree though they shouldn’t have moved from the serious-ish tone of the first 2 games

I remember buying Saints Row before even having a 360 back in the day. It took me 6 months to save up enough money but the journey was well worth it. SR1 holds a special place in my heart.

I don't normally comment on things but I had to stop by to say a few words. First of all, thank you for always sticking by the Saints Row community for all these years man. It's been nice to see your progression as a content creator and I truly believe this is your absolute best production to date. This probably took so long to create so kudos to you. Next, you simply deserve more subs man. You really do. Cheers to your future success with differing open world games you plan to cover like you mentioned before... I feel like 2024 will be the year you finally get the recognition you deserve. I'll be here supporting no matter what. Btw, looking forward to part 2.

SR 1 was ironically the last game in the original series I played, but I was surprised by how well it held up. It sucks so hard people just labeled it as a GTA clone making Volition feel it was necessary to give Saints Row it's own identity. Looking forward to your documentaries on the rest of the series, Papa RPG.

This game could've became a titan with a focus on gang and business building aspects, something GTA lacks even up to this day, this game did gangs even better than San Andreas. I've said this hundreds of times but just imagine if the series was going hard nowadays with gang building, immersion, drug trafficking, kidnapping and adding More features and activities, it could literally fight against GTA, specially by adapting modern gang and rap culture. But nah they went soft

@@shadowmaster452 Yeah, going forward, I still rank SR1 as my personal favorite because it felt more realistic and the world it was all built in was detailed and full of more freedom. Saints Row did a lot that I couldn't experience in GTA at the time. I even enjoyed a lot of aspects over the gameplay vs. GTA, such as free/manual aiming that worked well and even inside vehicles. SR1 did a much better job of making me feel like I was apart of something with the gang. You were not just some central story character, but you created yourself as a another member in the gang and could call on others to join you on missions. You had your own hideouts/cribs and could purchase clothing and other cool things at stores. This just made me feel more apart of that world Stilwater was set in. I still enjoy it to this day. They should kept it the way it was in the first game around street level-styled gangs. I preferred it that way because it made feel like I had to work up to something from the time I joined the gang as a player in the beginning. You can even witness the lower-developed parts of Stilwater with graffiti on the walls and so on. I prefer that setting and look. It gave things an untouchable atmosphere.

I believe all the OG game devs retired and younger ones who saw the numbers they brought in joined but they didn’t have the same passion and were going if name value so they didn’t try much because they thought the team would carry them but the whole team wanted to be carried by the predecessors work

It’s unfortunate, because I went back to visit playing the reboot today, and I think the city they designed isn’t bad. It’s the city’s lifeless atmosphere. The npc numbers are low and there’s no auditory ambience that give off any life either. It just a desolate place. Volition really should listened. Because they didn’t, we’ll never get another saints row game now that the studio was shut down. A truly sad ending for a once loved studio and game series.

SR1/2 were the peak of it sadly. It could’ve stuck to more serious tone and really been the rival to GTA which isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s a damn near perfect compliment in fact. Nothing is like GTA, it is its own real competitor in the open world rpg genre of its sort. I liked role playing just some street kid delving deeper and deeper into the underworld, losing those I loved along the way and sure winning in the end of 2 but left wondering at what cost. Would’ve loved a spin off bringing back the Vice Kings to rival the Saints tbh.

Excellent video! I got into the series in mid 2008 when a friend had a copy of Saints Row that they never played. I picked it up and played it. I immeadiately loved it and being able to create your own player is a large part of it. And this was just a few months before Saints Row 2 was coming out. Saints Row is my favorite console game of all time. The reboot is like an ex-wife you once loved, who's grown to be bitter, mean, and awful. I may consider the reboot one of the worst games ever made, but I'll always love the first two original games.

I was one of the kids that played SR1 on the Xbox demo disc from the magazine, it was always one of my favorites but i didn't wind up getting the actual game until it was in a platinum hits box.

Should have stick the same format continue with dex as a villain in New York or some shit and the boss tries to kill him a revenge story in SR3 or prequel and you play as Benjamin and Julius co op you and your climbing the rise of power, there was endless of ideas but they decided to make them idiots

My introduction to Saints Row was with Saints Row IV thanks to my best friend back in College and despite that at that point the franchise was in a downward spiral of sorts, it was a fun game nonetheless. Shame that after IV it was when things went south once and for all for Saints Row with Gat Out of Hell "to me that game was bleh" and Agents of Mayhem that came and went like a fart in the wind and last but certainly not least the nail in the coffin with the reboot. It's sad how the series slowly decayed from what it once was but it seems like by the time SR3 released the writting was on the wall.

3 is when we should have noticed that they were moving away from what made the first 2 fun yeah 3 has some good voice acting and a funny radio station and 4 by this point they had 3 pro wrestlers being in the voice cast Hulk Hogan, RVD, and Roddy Piper plus they brought back Gat and for Gat Out Of Hell I could only find that the cut scenes were fun but what a glitchy bastard yet still looks more functional than the reboot that killed the franchise

Man the thing with Saints Row 1 was it was Xbox 360 Exclusive. And never got PC or PS3 Port. Since no PC Port the game cannot be that easy as the game didnt have fine aim. It was a challenge then again Saints Row 1 was harder than 2 3 4 GOTH Especially 3 and 4 due to upgrades lmao.

Man thank you so much for this video just recently looked into all the games again and was disappointed with what they did to the franchise. So I looked up what saints row one was like and immediately was flooded with the nostalgia and memories from this game when I was 3-4. This was like the first game I ever played looking back on it absolutely incredible. Thank you for reminding me of how wonderful the games use to be and the backstory and innovating things that make other games like gta what they are now.

As a playstation guy and a fan of this franchise, a year ago I got Saints Row 1. First time playing it after wanting to for so long and honestly Its become one of if not my favourite in the franchise. I love the aesthetics of the game, i love how colourful it is and I love the simplicity and interesting story. I have already replayed it three times.

10:34 one of the very few complaints I have with the game, no fog? Never seen Taxi Driver or Gta3? Foggy dark cities are cool as shit. Also it’s weird to consider all of this is pretty much unknown still now, if the game was coming in 2024 absolutely everything in this video would be leaked 5 months early and have 30 articles written about it.

I know I repeat myself but come on Saints Row 1+2! It's such a no brainer that it's a crime that it hasn't happened yet. Though I always wondered about why Saints Row is so beloved, like what's the deal with Saints Row and it took me to watch a Video with All Cutscenes of SR1 to understand and in my honest opinion: I played GTA5 and it just doesn't come close to what the SR1 story has to offer, especially regarding the Characters!

*Saints Row 1, Saints Row 3 and Agents Of Mayhem are my favorites in the series. each of them baught something new and unique to the franchise and I had a blast with all 3.....but I'll never forget buying my first Xbox 360 and buying that Saints Row demo.....Mmmmm Good Times* 👍

Damn I remember pre ordering SR1 on their actual website. The day it was delivered we had a school trip with our parents to go watch a some play. My mum knew how excited I was and purpose took us to the wrong venue so we could go home and I could play… Big up mum you legend!!!

Saints Row was fun until it started to get all fictiony later in the series. I thought it would have been a good GTA competitor after playing the first one
