Love it, love it, love it. You guys should have had a full room of spectators for this game - this is a great watch!

I still play this game. Its one of my favorite Rpg's of all time. I love seeing it in a speedrun. And the music is phenomenal as well. Way to go!

Zio's battle is not boring at all! It's insane that the arguably best fight in the game happens at only 25% of it!

In AIR CASTLE cast GRA on Dimensional Wall monsters. takes them out in 1 hit most of the time. I saw the guys taking a beating to them for no reason. Great run I learned a lot

bs4830 GRA. Lol. I love how cryptic the names of spells and abilities are in this series.

I think the thing I loved most about this game were the vehicles. When you ran into monsters you could use the weapons on the vehicles to fight them.

This reminded me of when I played Purgatory version and practically had to fight the final form with just Hahn and Rune

Fascinating collection of item names...kinda sad that even a mid-90s era JRPG was limiting character names so much every character only has a four-character name and equipment had to be in shorthand. But I think I've deciphered it--the first letters generally describe what the material of the item is. CRBN would be Carbon, CRMC would be Ceramic, and GRPT has to be...Grapefruit! Oh, wait, no, probably not; probably Graphite.

No...its grapefruit. Your first instinct is usually correct.

It was an artifact of the localization process. Japanese is a more dense language and requires fewer characters (both on-screen and, usually, in memory) to render concepts. "CRMC" might have been all that would fit in memory, and plenty of games were so cramped on memory usage (Phantasy Star IV came on a then-enormous cartridge, and cost nearly a hundred bucks--it was originally supposed to be a Sega CD game!) or had so little access to the original code of the game (more than one early localized games was functionally a ROM hack) that reworking the game's memory structure to provide more space was a non-starter.

@@EdRopple Yeah, today ROM hackers mostly know how to repoint to expanded space for re/fan-translations, but back before the early aughts you had to essentially just find whatever free space that could be scraped up without jostling too much data around or else you might introduce game-crippling bugs. And you couldn't simply expand the data because cartridges had a hard limit on space, and even if you used a bigger cart, expanding didn't necessarily mean that a real console wouldn't crash without some extra assembly instruction trickery.

@@neoqwerty Yup yup. Some of the SNES Fire Emblem titles are a complete monster - one only had a translation patch finished this year because it was so unstable.

@@EdRopple Yup! Before (if it's the one I'm thinking of) the menu couldn't be changed because it was very temperamental and even the menu-only translation was prone to crashes. And even MODERN translations have to sometimes butcher a bit of stuff to fit in the english. The two I can think off off the top of my head are Megaman Battle Network 5 DS, which ripped out an entire area and moved the rewards elsewhere for the extra space gained, and Lunar Knights doing... SOMETHING to the Star Force Crossover story, because they took out the entire scenario, the few items that survived are little more than graphics and empty text strings, and Omega-Xis only has the most bare-bones functions left to avoid crashing the game if you hack him back in. The space both of those freed was used in the localization process.

I only recently learned this game shares DNA with Shining force! The art and story pack a lot of charm into a simple (by today’s standards) game. Gryz manages to be especially memorable despite playing a relatively minor roll.

@DFunct905

brownkv081 this game wasn’t grindy IMO. I did have access to some faqs I mainly used for reference rather than as guides. I found grinding wasn’t necessary as long as I fought most of the random encounters along the way.
