Hey, UBG thanks once again for taking the time to film and discuss your Vanagon repair and improvement project. There is an art to doing such. I've attempted filming the heater fan replacement but alas decided it wasn't worthy. I replaced the water pump on my 91 Multivan recently and found the same allen bolts on the lower pipe. I ended up shortening an allen wrench to allow it to work. Keep on Truckin

I echo the appreciation of your faithful postings, especially as 83.5 owner. Appreciate your sarcasm in your videos too. Thankfully The water pump replacement on our Westy was done by a shop. I also agree that Ken supplies great (quality & complete) parts. I used his German rotors and bearings when I did my front end. Ken was available via phone call even on a Sunday when I had some questions.

Hi, I find this video easy to follow and I'll likely be doing this job on our 1984 UK version of the same van (T25). Just one question: I can see three O-rings among the parts you were sent. I think the medium-size one is for the thermostat itself. What are the large and small O-rings for?

Was the water pump leaking or making noise ? How do you know if it is bad ? I am working to get a 85 back on the road, replaced the coolant level sensor and light went out, but last owner told me, oh yea, drove it that way for years. Genius. The belt just started to make a noise like it was slipping (idled fine on saturday), hope it is just the belt(s). trying to fix one problem at a time..power steering line done, new gas tank in my living room, coolant expansion tank and cap on order...thanks !

Actually, it was the thermostat that needed replacement but whenever I take hours to fix things and there is another $50 part that can and should be replaced like the water pump I go ahead and do it.

update, a year later...hey I had my best man working on it.... I finally got the replacement engine in and with help from a traveling mechanic, we got it running ..now to bleed it, the hoses were all hot and the light did come on while trying to bleed it so I think the thermostat ok, I was sort of thinking that the water pump would drain down the expansion tank..hope I don't have to do this job.....

I watched your video (nice work) then called my mechanic and made a appt. to have my water pump replaced. I know it’s gonna be mucho dinero, but that job looks like pro grade work to me, and I’m not a pro.

It really is a bear. As long as you get a good price from the mechanic it is worth having them do it. I decided against replacing my old clutch recently as I estimated 10 hours for me to do it and the mechanic did it for $250 labor, well worth it.

My cost was about twice that, but I completely trust the shop and I know they did it right. Sometimes you just have to write the check!
