The song lyrics in Telugu, especially Dosti (the friendship montage song) are extremely beautiful and poetic that completely gets lost in translation. Those lyrics were written by one of the best Telugu poets (Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry) in recent times who passed away recently. It makes sense why you would feel the subtitled translation of lyrics to be on the nose.

Songs doesn't translate in literal way, imagine "what a wonderful world" playing in movie/tv show as a character is walking in NY, it is only meant to convey pleasant/happy feelings, and not literally looking at birds, animals and butterflies. It is the same in Indian movies, some have literal meaning while others are only to set the mood for the character/scene. RRR should have skipped the subtitles in songs, it doesn't feel right to read it, its meant to be heard in passive.

Never ever prejudice or stereotype any film industry that too INDIAN CINEMA. It's not easy to understand INDIA as a country in the 1st place itself. It's a very very very unique country with zero HOMOGENEITY unlike other countries. There's no country like INDIA in the world. So you can't judge INDIA by the spectrum of Korea, China, Japan, USA etc. which are all homogenous in nature with 1 language 1 culture being prevalent in the entire country.
@twoasianblokes
@twoasianblokes 2 жыл бұрын
thanks for the info! agreed, cinema is varied in all countries, especially as the world gets more connected.

@@twoasianblokes I think you again missed the point made.. Unlike korea, japan US etc which has just one language being spoken ALL over the country ( there might be different dialects), In india each state has a different language(not just a dialect) with slightly varying cultures. Which means Indian cinema itself is highly heterogenous with multiple film industries. Its unlike anything except probably Europe, but Europe is not even one country...
@twoasianblokes
@twoasianblokes 2 жыл бұрын
@@sweetchinmusic3 yes, the point is well made. i can see how india is unique in the scale of its varietal languages and cultures. but i don't think language is the only point of difference when it comes to cinema. even a country such as the US, where the majority of people speak english can provide so much variety in their cinema because of generational differences, cultural differences, and simply personal differences in the people responsible for film making. i'm saying that all countries have the potential to offer a wide variety of movies, india included. can't wait to explore what else indian cinema has to offer :D
@gauthamvadlamudi3500
@gauthamvadlamudi3500 2 жыл бұрын
For people who understand the language, the songs make it even more intense, emotional and aggravating to watch. The song is not intended to mellow it down and it doesn't in actuality. Only because western audience are in their single genre filmmaking style, these things are outside their bubble n are foreign to them. Culturally songs and dance are mainly for expressing deep emotions and thoughts. Culturally they r tools to express first and then them being an art Form. So having a BGM in western movies is analogous to songs in Indian movies (cultural differences). Ofc the typical Bollywood movies are different.. as they have a music video break in a movie to express the mood of the characters. But in RRR, the song doesn't break the flow but is a part of story telling. Also, the thing you say about song is telling things explicitly... For example there might be betrayal etc... This is felt mainly because u r reading the subtitles. The song lyrics and the word choice and patterns used create a certain type of subconscious connect with the story. But the subtleties are lost in translation and the literal meaning is what u guys perceive. Don't compare it to Bollywood. Just call it Indian movie. It's fine. Also, the western world is totally oblivious to Indian culture, literature and epics like they know Greek, Roman European or Chinese/oriental literature, which is very unfortunate.. especially because the vastness of epics and stories from India are at a larger scale than most of them. One of the epics Mahabharata is said to be longer than illiad and odessey combined.
@twoasianblokes
@twoasianblokes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the interesting details! Yes, I imagine a lot gets lost in translation, which is an unfortunate consequence of watching a movie that is not in our native tongue. However, although we probably don't get the original intent of the music, we had a blast watching these scenes and listening to the songs. I think the emotion gets conveyed through the performances, despite the subbing. Hopefully more people like us, who don't really have much knowledge on Indian culture and cinema, will watch this movie and be inspired to learn more.

3:40 bollywood is not a genre, it is a movie industry. It is like saying that I don't like Hollywood because I don't like Superhero movies. Similar to Hollywood, there are a lot of types of Indian movies. Just because it is easier to find Avengers playing in the theatre than Three Billboards doesn't mean those kind of movies don't get made. How would you like it if someone who only watched Endgame made a judgement on entire Hollywood that all they make is 3 hour long films about purple aliens.

Please watch "Sardar Udham", It's a biopic set in colonial times. It will show case a completely different side of Indian movie making. It's a slower burn. However, its final act is harrowing and exposes the atrocities of British Raj. My other recommendations will be: 1. Lunch Box 2. Kumbalangi Nights (Best introduction to slice of life/realistic malayalam movie industry) 3. Jallikattu (An allegorical telling of humanity's descent into its primal roots. It's truly an unique experience) 4. Court (a 2014 Marathi film, A dark comedy and a sattire on the justice system) 5. Ship of Theseus (There is Indian cinema before this movie and there is the one after this. A ground breaking movie and truly thought provoking) 6. 3 Idiots (The best of comedy musicals ever made out of bollywood. It's Universally loved and is a critique of Indian education system) 7. Bajirao Mastani (An Epic historical drama) 8. Tumbbad (A thriller with fantasy/horror elements. It exposes the nature of greed with an unique story and has great cinematography) 9. Dangal (The highest grossing Indian movie ever, it's a sports biopic about two female wrestlers who broke through all cultural barriers with the help of their father. One of the best sports movies to come out India) 10. Haider (Set in the backdrop of Kashmir, one of the best adaptations of Hamlet ever made) 11. Newton (A dark comedy and a satire on the fockle nature of elections and democracy) 12. Aligarh (Based on true story of a gay professor and his struggles) 13. Masaan (One of the finest depictions of pain & perils faced by people in modern India) 14. Queen (A coming to age story of a conservative indian girl dumped before her marriage. It's a vibrant and a refreshing take on feminism) 15. The Great Indian Kitchen (This movie frustrates one for all the right reasons. A brilliant depiction of various loud & subtle ways in which patriarchy plagues our society) And Finally, 16. Gangs of Wasseypur (A two part crime epic. In the leagues of "the godfather" and "goodfellas". The movie recieved praise from Martin Scorcese)

If you'd like to see an Indian movie and aren't just looking for romance, this would be a good place to start The Cinemark near me has started to show Indian movies. Not feeling like sitting home tonight, I decided to catch this one, and luck was with me. My image of Indian movies, I confess, was that they were mostly musicals centering around a love story involving a very beautiful young woman and a very handsome young man, with lots of elaborate, high-energy dance numbers to keep things going. There is a love story here, but it's not the focus of the film. There are also a few large and very impressive dance numbers, but only a few. (The men's dancing, extremely athletic, astounded me.) Rather, this movie focuses on the story of two young men in 1920s India who, each in his own way, are fighting against the English occupiers. The English are portrayed as inhuman monsters. Very often, they made me think of the worst atrocities committed by the Germans in France during World War II, or the most rabid racists in the American South. The first time we see the two male leads dancing, a link is indeed made between the Indians and what appear to be Black American musicians. Every time the Indians manage to take revenge on the English for their inhuman abuse of the Indians, you cheer - but at times I wondered if I would have cheered watching a parallel movie about Blacks taking revenge on white racists who had mistreated them in the American South, especially if I had been in a movie theater where, like tonight, I was the only audience member who did not belong to the oppressed population. Imagine Spike Lee, for example, able to make a movie in which he did not have to worry about selling tickets to whites as well as Blacks, and you have some idea of how anti-British colonials this movie is. It is the difference between a society in which the oppressor was a small minority of the population vs. Here, where Blacks are a minority of the American population. I don't want to push this comparison too far. The movie only makes the connection in one scene. But this is very definitely a movie that focuses on the story of a brutally oppressed people seeking freedom from an inhuman oppressor, rather than just a series of dance numbers. I don't speak any of the Indian languages used in the movie, but I had no problem following what was going on with the subtitles, which were almost always easy to read. I'm sure there were cultural references I didn't catch, however, especially at the end in the final big dance number, which seemed to be presenting India as a nation of different regions and cultures all united in one. The director and cinematographer definitely deserve praise. There was one very striking visual image after the next, especially during the battle scenes. Ram Charan, dressed as a "native warrior"-if that term means anything anymore-flying through flames was breathtaking. So, if you've even been curious about Indian movies, give this one a try. Yes, it's three hours long, but trust me, the time goes flying by. This is truly an action movie, a mixture of visual fantasy and often very graphic realism that held my interest to the end.

Not all Indian films are epic, over the top, historic and high budget busters.... well, that's what's gaining the high amount of recognition world wide but I'd like you to check some grounded stuff from the southern and the North Indian cinema as well. They're not necessarily bollywood but here are some suggestions from a few directors and Actors where you can start from 1. Films of Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur part 1,2) 2. Shoojith Sircar's "Sardar Udham" (Got rejected for an oscar submission due to political reasons of how the film potrays against someone but it's very dumb of them to cancel on those aspects since we have films like Schindlers' list) 3. Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi and Vikram.... (A universe of it's own) 4. Hey Ram by Kamal Haasan ( Like literally, he wrote, acted, directed, produced and is also a dance, make up artist, choreographer, Technician, singer and a lot of other things you can explore) 5. And for nice romantic films that hollywood might not have ever done or seen is a film called 96 by Vijay sethupathi and Trisha

There are such scenes too in Indian movies nd series it's not like that but the thing is in mainstream masala Indian movies it's not really needed and you want to connect with masses and families so then you play more on the safe side that's all.

Just call it INDIAN CINEMA🇮🇳 that's all just INDIAN CINEMA. Unnecessarily imposing this WOODY stuff is quite annoying. India is a diverse country with many languages. This movie was shot in Telugu & also was shot in such a way that it syncs with other languages when it gets voiceover. Voiceover was done by the same actors since they know other languages also & this took equal amount of effort to do so & it took many days to complete that. In India there are movies shot simultaneously in 2-3 languages together so that it remains original in several languages. So just call it INDIAN CINEMA🇮🇳 that's all.

You guys are really missing out on some great movies. Sardar Udham, Masaan, Black Friday, Lunchbox, Gangs of Wasseypur, A Wednesday, Pather Panchali, Mirch Masala, Maqbool, Rajkahini, Goopy Bagha and many more just to name a few

Western critics have noted the bromance as nothing that they have ever seen in Western movies, who're not cop partners. I wonder how friendship is portrayed in other east Asian movies, is it as intense as this with their montage? Some white critics described their bromance as gay!
@twoasianblokes
@twoasianblokes 2 жыл бұрын
you see bromance similar to this in older hk movies, like the john woo heroic bloodshed movie ie. the killer, a better tomorrow etc. It's done pretty much the same way, so it's interesting to see shared aspects in this film.

India is lot liberal with violence even if director knows children will watch..sex is tricky thing.. India is more liberal with sex in ott series,less in movies that are run in theaters...I wouldn't call industry as conservative because actresses expose lot in dance numbers..I think many western actress would be reluctant to be objectified that way

yeah, it's weird. I'm sure these kind of friendships are present in western cinema (like in buddy cop movies ie. rush hour, lethal weapon etc.) so I don't know why the west has labeled bheem and raju's relationship as "gay". maybe critics and audiences are reaching a bit 🤷

0:53 I appreciate you clarifying Tollywood. But can you please not say things like it’s “technically Telugu”? This is a Telugu film. It’s not Hindi or otherwise. It’s not technically Telugu.. This matters a lot for Telugus whose films have traditionally been mocked by the Hindi language counterpart Bollywood. It’s also masterfully done with Telugu references that are a stamp of personality on the film. Please be aware and clear on this fact.
