In this powerful new RSA Minimate, TIME’s Editor-at-Large Anand Giridharadas argues that while the winners of our age might be well meaning in their desire to give back, too many stop short at the kinds of real change that would see power more radically distributed.
The minds behind the award-winning RSA Animate series are back! RSA Minimates are super-short, information-packed animations for busy people. All audio excerpts are taken from live, FREE events at the RSA’s HQ in London, and animated by Cognitive. This animation was produced by RSA Senior Events and Animations Producer, Abi Stephenson.

Brilliantly put. People in charge of change should not be sweeping off ideas off the table that might hamper themselves but benefit the greater society.

2:54 Isn't Sheryl Sandberg the 'Lean In' lady? If I'm not mistaken, she's the one he's referring to when he uses that line, "Tell women that thousands of years of patriarchy is a problem with their posture or angle of recline," or similar. Amy Cuddy is the 'Power Poses' lady that Anand talks about in his current book.

This is cool because it fully outlines the thesis of the book. The book still serves as countless examples of the phenomenon and adds the human element and historical perspective. Definitely one of my best reads last year.

If the oligarhcial elites choose not to assist in positive ways, social circumstances will remain a lose-win or a false double win for those in power, i.e., floundering public schools, disenfranchised women, and so on. Enjoyed the video, very thought-provoking.

No mention here of economic externalities. Prices are not honest, so we end up doing the wrong thing. IF industries were made to pay fees when they put pollution or deplete natural resources, THEN they would make an effort to *reduce* harmful impacts on the environment. If fees are made high enough so that industries are trying hard (hard enough) to reduce impacts, we will be able to take random polls and find most people saying that this or that kind of pollution, etc., is not being emitted in excess of what is acceptable. The right of the people to limit impacts on the environment is embodied in practice when a control mechanism (e.g.: a fee) is instituted and the reality matches what average opinion says is OK. If proceeds from environmental impact fees are shared to all people, no one would be forced to stay in an oppressive work environment for fear of becoming destitute. The value of natural wealth has been estimated to exceed $100/day for every person on Earth. If this wealth is shared, no one would live in abject poverty. People could decline any offer of employment that they feel is too burdensome or otherwise objectionable. [No one would be riding anyone's back if employers knew that their employees must WANT to stay as employees. Sharing natural wealth (respecting PUBLIC property rights) will mean an end to the threat of poverty.] What economist will say, "Make prices honest (so profits align with what is sustainable); and share natural wealth (so no one lives in poverty)"? Make a healthy society: gaiabrain.blogspot.com/2018/11/we-need-to-make-healthy-society.html

I think Adam Jensen said it best. "He's not afraid of freedom. He's afraid of the chaos that is unleashed when people have nothing but their morality to constrain their actions." We can't rely on people to be moral, they would then only be moral when they arn't tired, or in a bad mood, or when they feel like it. That is why we have laws.

It sounds like he is pro government (paying taxes)? While I am of the belief that the government and state are failing us. Im not saying that corporations side stepping paying taxes is a good idea, I just want change. And I want it to be equal and for all. Neither the government or the corporations seem to be offering that.

Although I don't necessarily disagree with you in your concern for unaccountable power - as we all should be. However, the difference is that one is an explicitly private interest and the other is a public interest. Guess which one has more hope of serving the common good?

As a foreigner it's interesting that the american language has taxes in plural while in my language it's only in the singular. The reason is that america concieves of taxes as multiple new taxes added on stuff. We don't complicate it. "The tax" is one spesific % of your income that's it. Additional stuff is called "additionals" for lack of translation, so any debate about road tax etc isn't mixed with the debate about wether "the tax" should be higher. In fact american taxes are designed to make you annoyed by them to favor the politicians who wants to rail against taxes. In my country all sales tax is included in price so you don't have to be reminded that you are paying a tax for every item you buy (it's seen as a tax on the firm selling the product, not taxing the buyer of the product) while in america you have to (as I understand it) add to the price because the politicans and firms *want you to be reminded of the tax every time you buy something* and thereby feel like you are the one paying multiple taxes every time you buy stuff. Because they profit politically or in business from you being mad about taxes.

I think his point was that social change does not come without a cost, and the concept of corporate philanthropy and the overuse of "win-win", have led to people being less demanding of social change. I felt there was a bias for some ideas in there, but I didn't pick it out the first time and don't want to rewatch the video 3-4 times.

Seemed pretty easy to understand. 1) Lately everyone pretends to be a philantropist. 2) They only do so when they don't have to go through any real pain to contribute. 2) Some things simply don't have a win win. If Jeff Bezos pays his workers more they win and he loses or vica verca.

@@Nachos4587 Well democratic socialism is still capitalism but its implementing the concepts to make it equitable. Basically to the right of the broader range of socialism. Ahh shucks. You spent too much of your life drawing, and now you know absolutely nothing about economics. Which is as it should be, since you didn't earn the knowledge, but now you suffer under the delusion that you know something you simply don't. You are like an art critic who "doesn't know about art, but knows what I likes". And now you spent all this time illustrating a pack of lies. A waste. Yes, yes, yes. We are all monsters who watch terrible things happen and do nothing- even though, mysteriously, the world gets better in every way, every day. Sad
