Sew With Me - This week I am making an origami folded hexagon Christmas ornament. I am trying to recreate an ornament that I received several years ago from a blog friend. I'm mixing a few tutorials that I found in order to make it.

Andrea Rossiello Depends on how many you are making. You can use scraps or yardage. Each hexagon starts at 6” “square” so If making several I would estimate using a 7” square for each ornament. That way you have a little wiggle room.

I have been fascinated by what can be done with folded paper since my grade school days 60 years ago. Paper airplanes, fortune tellers, folded paper cups, gum wrapper chains, and paper water balloons were a few of the objects I folded before I learned the term origami. It is the craft that continues to draw and inspire me over time. I love when I can combine me various hobbies. This is especially true when fabric, sewing, and origami combine. ❤️ Thank you for this video to remind me of this hexagon ornament that I have made from both paper and fabric over the years.

I used a linen fabric without interfacing the first time I tried these, but found the fabric frayed a lot. The second time, I outlined the inside edge of the cut lines with Tacky Glue and let it dry before I cut the fabric. It worked great! The glue made the edges stiffer and made it easy to sew even without interfacing. One hint - don't use washable ink for the cut lines, use something permanent or the glue will erase the markings!

I have made over a dozen and still going. I made several small ones and some a little larger. I have one of the cloth die cutters and used the 8" hexagon die and larger ones are easier. I have a bag of flat white snowflake buttons and put small to medium on the top side and a large one on the back. That way on the tree either side looks good. Going to put them on packages for an extra little gift. Thanks for the tutorial!

That is awesome!! I believe I might have the same snowflake buttons and you’re right, they are perfect for this ornament. I’ll have to try making some larger ones. Thanks so much. A few years ago, I started a project to make a vest with these in a panel on the front for my sister. Had forgotten about it until now. This is a great idea. You could use wrapping paper scraps fortified with perhaps freezer paper to embellish gifts. I'm defiantly going to play with this. Tyfs. Love your tutorials & no I don't think you talk too much! LOL

Thank you I tried the Pentagon one last year and liked it but could not get templates large enough . I will certainly try these looking forward to trying it. Have you tried it in paper or light weight cardboard.?

Jeanette Grinter I have not tried It using cardboard. If you have a good bone folder It might work. Never hurts to try. Good luck!

I hand embroidered a simple ribbon rose or poinsettia and a few other shapes on the back of mine. Just let you’re creativity flow🙌🏼no need to buy ribbon just for this step but use crafting ribbon( not wired) ,embroidery floss or yarn of choice and a large eyed embroidery needle. Stay safe and healthy everyone ❤️TYFS

Love the project....have just tried and will make more. I used a self adhesive gem front and back. Added a bit of sparkle for Christmas. Thank you for sharing.
