RSX Engine grenading from over rev

a friend was driving the last leg of our 18hr drive home from TX2k10, he decided to race a ricetastic 3g eclispe, missing the easiest shift of all 3-4. Over revving the engine, spitting it's guts along I-71 and under the car a mere 15min from home.
Current outstanding balance for replacement engine/etc 9-1-11 $800+

If you're used to it they're very hard to miss gears. The thing is though, the transmission is so good itll let you shift into 2nd at 15,000 RPMs. Idk about most cars but my old Mazda just wouldn't let you do that. Transmission wasn't good enough. It'd just be like no. Along with 1st gear downshifts, those were always kinda difficult.

That guy in the driver's seat is one of the biggest fail fests I've ever seen!!! First he fails at initiating the roll on race.. Then he misshifts in a car with one of the best manual transmissions available. Finally, after he blows the motor up, he manages to slam into a large pothole, possibly doing damage to the suspension, or the wheels, or both!!!! "Wow" he says! Hahaha! Wow indeed!

Because a pothole is visible and avoidable, meanwhile he's still in shock about something that already happened and can not be instantly corrected (like missing a pothole). Why add salt to the wound, right?

Ford blue exactly. Just the engine alone was $2000. He had given me $1200 up the date I put in the description. It is now 5.5 years later and I just sold the car earlier this year and never received a single cent since I last edited the info.

This happened in my 1999 Honda Prelude twice which is also notorious for miss-shifting when going from 3rd down to 4th, it can easily pop in to second during a high rev quick gear shift, especially while cornering. Happened twice, second time tore timing belt.

This is really unfortunate . I feel for you man . Miss shift can happen to anyone so before you race make sure you are 100 % you know how to shift. It happen to me when i first got Civic SI but i was around 5000 rpm and i went up to 6000 .

replaced a bunch of motors when the rsx first came out. It will store a overrev code. Had one store at over 11 grand once.

A money shift is an accidental downshift when intending to upshift while the engine is approaching or at the redline. It's called a money shift because it costs money due to engine and/or transmission damage.

Money shift is when you downshifting (either deliberately or accidentally) during high RPM (like 2K-3K or so)

same over rev has happened to me on my prelude... It is hard to shift fast without reving when you push in the clutch and let off the gas fast... thankfully mine has survived this about 4 times. No more racing for me.

so he went from high 3rd gear back to 2nd? my buddy did that with an LT1 and it didnt blow and he was at the track, he actually went from 2nd to 1st gear which is worse. he almost lost it into the wall but it held up fine. i pulled off a vacuum line it moved so much. i dont see how you go from 3rd to 2nd and most of the time your trans wont let you unless your REALLY force it in. my other buddy had a 2000 s10 xtreme with a 4cyl 5 speed and he was just learning to drive stick which we were like 16 at the time. he had a honda fly by him so he went to catch up and was in 5 cruising around 55 or 60 and went to 2nd and that thing was SCREAMING!!! it was fine after that though.

Sean Price yeah im a mechanic by trade, i know it doesnt like it if you try. i dare you to try it in my car and try as hard has to can to powershift it back to 1st to 2nd. you can force it back in 1st especially with a t56 with syncos with some wear. i saw him do it but he told e he went back to 1st but i always suspected he went from high 3rd to 2nd. the guy was a terrible driver and he probably honestly didnt know. that car ended up hitting a telephone poll a few month later.

Damn that sucks man but to be honest it's 100% your fault for handing over the keys. I was close to making the same mistake. I let a friend drive my brand new 09 MX-5 Sport 6spd like a week after I bought it because he was begging me to take it for a spin. Beautiful pearl white and super nice wheels that came off a custom 300ZX. Anyways, on the highway he went from 4th to 3rd instead of 5th....... luckily he didn't break anything but after that I told him to get the fuck out and I never let anyone drive my car ever again. I was so fucking mad. It's just not worth the bullshit. Everyone knows how to drive until they're in your car...worst part is if he did shatter my trans like yours I wouldn't have been able to make him pay me back because it's my fault for handing my keys over. Gotta take responsibility for your shit.

Does not sound like a miss shift at all. If you listen carefully, when hes flooring it you can here the engine hit the electronic rev limiter. He then SHIFTS, Into second I bet, I bet he was in third about to hit fourth and down shifted instead. By simply having the clutch pedal in or having trans in neutral or park, you can hold down the acceleration pedal all day and the rev limiter would kick in. He EXCEEDED the electronic system by forcing the engine past its safety limits once the transmission engaged in a gear where top speed at 7000 rpms was maybe 60 and now its doing 90 mph in 2nd gear, which would equal 14,000+ rpms roughly. idk, just my opinion.

That is exactly what a mechanical over-rev is. Of course thats what happened. He shifted into a lower gear, and when he let the clutch out, the wheels were traveling faster than the engine was capable. An engine is like a dude pushing a cart up a hill. When you mechanical over-rev, its the same as you pulling the cart downhill, and getting run over by it.

He was probably WOT shifting, people (ricers) do it all the time when they're racing. BTW: You can't just multiply revs like that to get 14k, it depends on the difference of the ratios between 1st and 2nd and what the FD is. Though yeah, it'd be way too high either way.

CLA 45 AMG. Trust me it doesn't sound pathetic at all. Sound's almost exactly like a C63. Plus mine's fully loaded with the performance exhaust etc, that could also be why it sounds better. Plus if anyone can make a I4 sound good then it's AMG. Plus going 0-60 in 4.2 for a I4 is damn amazing.

He he he .....don't know how to shift and know nothing about cars. The tranny did not blow, you over spun the motor and dropped a valve due to the valve keeper breaking due to the high rotation caused from a faulty nut behind the wheel.

Power Stroker I have worked with Acura for over ten years and I have seen what happens when they do this. So yes he broke more than a keeper but the keeper was the first thing that broke. Sorry but I am still right. I have seen to many of these to know any less.

Chris Langdon I know I'm late to this but I'm kind of thinking you're full of it...keepers? Really? That's like the last thing on any engine to break...EVER!!! Valves get smacked by pistons and don't break the keepers....pistons grenade through the top of motors and the keepers are still there. You know it's pretty easy to post a video of this. It seems common to me. There's always some moron destroying an rsx.

If you have a tune programed always keep the rev limiter so this does not happen

the rev limiter cuts spark at a set rpm, thus not allowing an engine to pass that rpm even if there is wheel spin or not. he missed a shift with his foot to the floor and that happened

That's not really how shifting over rev works. They guy went from 3rd to second gear under acceleration. When he engaged the clutch the motor caught up with the wheels in a gear that couldn't handle the speed.. You cant make your car go over 100 in second gear but if you shift to second while at 100 the motor will be forced to catch up in literally 10ths of a second.

Rev limiters do not cut fuel in cars... The main job of a rev limiter In cars is to cut spark...You cant cut fuel in a running motor especially at high rev... That's like saying running lean doesn't hurt your car.. Running lean does hurt your engine and cutting fuel is called running lean. This is one reason why race cars with tuned rev limiters backfire. Fuel is still being dumped into the cylinder to be then ignited in the hot exhaust.. Rev limiter cuts spark. Maybe in some farm motor somewhere it cuts fuel but not in a car at 6-8000 rpm... Now the system might step back fuel a bit when the limiter kicks in to prevent sending so much fuel down the exhaust.

The Rooster Pretty different actualy. Combustion does not all ways stop when spark is killed. You have compression and hot exhaust that ignites excess fuel at those rev numbers. You said it "cuts fuel (not spark)". Just explaining how that can't happen or the engine would go BOOM...Hitting the Rev limiter doesn't cut fuel and make the engine go boom. The Rev limiter is there to prevent you from going into that territory of blowing an engine or different launch control applications. Not arguing. Just simply explaining. But, in the case of this NSX the motor it most likely broke from valve float or shaft flexing like you mentioned so I know you are right. I'm not challenging you. I'm just stating. Truce before we get to arguing.. lol

Wow...to add insult to injury he drives into a pothole after blowing it. It's kinda cool that you were "calm" about it. I would've went off on one and demanded my friend to donate some money towards blowing my engine up.
