This is one of my favourite stories nd can't Tq enough for it. Brings home the savage vulnerability nd the stark abjection of the human soul. Also the pitiful narrative that " Even God can't Help those who cannot help themselves. 🙏🙏🙏. Sahana Endorse

"Rain" (w/Joan Crawford and Walter Huston) is an excellent pre-code film of this Maugham short story.

Having traveled to two or three corners of the Earth myself, the fakest absurdity in Rain is that the boat to Honolulu was to arrive on the right day on the right hour. In reality it would have been two weeks late.

There is so much I detest about the British forcing their values on other parts of the world. This book is at the top of the list, so I discontinued listening.
