I left ireland in 1988, it was raining. I've returned various times since then but it's always been raining except one time I flew into Dublin and it was sunny. I rented a car and headed to Galway. As I got near Mullingar it started raining and continued for a week. I'm hoping global warming can sort this out!😁

Yep Don Coburn (if I spelt his name rightly?) and Charles Mitchell. I remember their newsreels well. I also remember when Don retired in the late 80s or early 90s I think? I remember he said he always used to cycle into RTE studios to clear his head.

Good question. At the time, Aer Lingus was the only Irish airline operating flights between Dublin and London -- and the government owned 85% of the company. It was a cash cow, a cosy little monopoly while it lasted.

Does anyone out there know the name of the font RTÉ News used for its logo at the time? It was also used elsewhere on TV in the early 1980s, like the chart rundown numbers on Top of the Pops and the mechanical clock shown before ITV programmes for Schools and Colleges. Anyone who can name the elusive font is a legend.

I still don't understand the ways to pronounce of some English surnames (Villiers sounding "Villers", St. John -> "Sinjin", Mainwaring -> "Mannering") & even among Irish surnames?! How come Cockburn sounds "Coburn" (James Coburn???)? Are there any other Irish surnames in such similar difficulties?

Could it in fact be July 10, 1986? I tried to find the name of the man shot at the building site. According to the CAIN Web Service, a twenty-year-old man, Brian Leonard, died on July 12, 1986, two days after being shot by the PAF at a building site in Snugville St, Belfast. The New York Times also records that Geoffrey Howe planned a diplomatic visit to South Africa in July 1986. www.nytimes.com/1986/07/08/world/british-diplomat-postpones-visit-to-south-africa.html

While the summer of 1985 was not a good one, weather wise, it was still a lot better than the crap summers we get nowadays, tgat pass as summers, like everything else, we have everything today but weve nothing, back then, we had nithing, but we had everything, meaning, we had no fancy lifestyle, no big houses, nor money, but we had better hearts, better memories as life was simpler. Don was a legend. Look how short the daily programme was on tv, so that meant with only 2 channels back then, no netflix crap, we got out more, less obesity too. We had problems in Ireland back then, but if i had a time i had a time machine, i wouldn't be staying in 2024 or going into 2024. I'd be going back to 1984 or 1985. Life today is absolute shit compared to back then. Golden Age of Music was the 1980’s, we had better values and better summer weather, but that wouldn't be hard, would it, and im only 48!!
