Good to know I possibly bought a 💣, they had this problem with the Toyota brz. I'm not finding anyone talking about this anywhere else. Hate to see that I'd have to pay a pretty penny to have this inspected/ fixed. Make sure you guys file a claim, hoping any new wrx owners find out and this better get warranty run.

However, I did not feel anything running abnormally, I can keep driving. Btw, the cruise light is flashing as well.

Subarus suffer from disproportionately poor ownership in my opinion. Many wrx/stis are teens first cool cars and they get dogged on. Most kids dont care about maintenance or are aware of when to stop beating on a car when there are signs of trouble. Subarus definitely have their quirks, but its greatly exacerbated by the owner demographic (modding, abuse, lack of maintenance)

I'm going to give 1 tip with FA Turbo drops. Leave the jpipe on it and disconnect the 2 bolt flange instead. So all you have to do is take off the exhaust flange after the j pipe and the 6 header bolts. I've done this countless times verse trying to remove the j-pipe off of the turbo and snapping studs which is entirely irritating. You could have an argument that the driver side header bolts are a pain in the ass to get to but it sure beats snapping/stripping a stud. With factory headers you have to take the shielding off, with aftermarket headers it is very very accessible.
@WIDEBODYNATION
@WIDEBODYNATION Жыл бұрын
Seems like a good tip. I’ll talk to Adrian about it and see if that is easier/possible with the way we did it. The studs were definitely a pain

@@WIDEBODYNATION it honestly comes off like it's installed like that from the factory. I've dropped FA turbos more times than I have fingers are toes. Mostly when people wanted headers installed. I just use a transmission jack when lowering the entire turbo, headers and jpipe, it's fooking heavy all together.

Maybe we reach out to all of 2022 WRX and BRZ owners on the social media to have their oil pan removed for this inspection with a Subaru representative's presence to witness. It would also be more interesting to have this work aired on either Fox or CNN news. I can't wait to see this coming sooner than later. I was so serious to purchase a WRX and a BRZ but very thankful to learn about this issue. I hope Subaru didn't hire their manufacturing engineers from high school.

I’ve seen a lot of videos showing the RTV and I’m thinking the new box screen with top screening and 4 sides screened are not blocked enough to stop flow or slow up the flow. I’d think driving into hard corners could effect intake flow of oil maybe?? Would I do mine, not right now because I don’t track my car. Good luck everyone.

I had SubaruUSA dropped my oil pan and clean up from my 22 BRZ under warranty. But tbh, i dont think the rtv matters that much, since there are 5 screens to the pick up (top, and all around). If the top screen is blocked, there are only less 30% surface area blocked. there's a youtuber who has done an analysis on the FA24 engine during high performance driving. He concluded that, reasons can cause oil starvation on the FA24 engines are oil sloshing + heads trapping oil at high rpm. Im waiting on Killer B to come out a baffled larger oil pan to solve this problem.

yeah so same on EJ, the RTV issue has always been overblown (bordering on hysteria). But Boxer engines will always have an oiling issue, which you solve via aftermarket parts that are easy / cheap to do. People overhyping crap like usual, RTV isn't the issue or cause of any engine failure we're hearing, it's the oiling design of boxers that is (like you said, oil sloshing and the heads). If you want to race a boxer (subaru) then you need to get your oiling sorted first. This is just a fact of life given the design of boxers and common sense, and has been this way for decades, so it's nothing new (for anyone who knows Subarus). I can see why new people might find it strange, but anyone familar with subarus and boxers it's nothing new and RTV has nothing to do with it. Same as how if you want to track it you'll make sure you're using the appropriate oil, brake fluid, and other mods. And come on, most cars need to be prepped for racing to some extent, so it's not just a Subaru thing either. These are commercial econo cars at the end of the day not sold directly from factory as genuine pre-prepped race cars (def not in this price range). The thing with Subies, however, and perhaps the reason people like us like them so much, is that they have the potential to be built into race cars. The aftermarket support for them is absolutely massive. And the EJ especially, has had insane aftermarket R&D behind it for decades given its use in motorsports. The EJ can be built into an actual race motor. But the key words there is 'can be built', it requires lots of work and knowledge, which pro race shops can do and have no trouble doing. But for a hobbyist with no idea, who thinks they're Colin Mcrae, that is when problems start lol.

The way Subaru and others make things so hard to do is mind boggling. If one were a conspiracy theory believer you would say it was deliberate. Get car through warranty period have things fail and money for the dealership shop. Considering that robots can provide a precise bead of any sealant or glue, weld etc this situation should never happen. I really enjoy my previous generation WRX but compared to the engines that Toyota made for the lowly Corolla to the Celica and Supra pre BMW this is both bad and sad. Owned a NA Corolla from new that got 650,000 km without a hiccup. Very eye opening video.

As this was happening with BRZ and the 86 one shop (I can’t remember off the top of my heads who relatively well known for being a master of FA motors in their area) have said that all motor failures they’ve seen are from oil starvation but it was because of 0W20 becoming too thin at high heat and not being able to fully lubricate the motor, even with the top of the pick up being clogged the holes that wrap all the way down the tube on the sides are able to supply plenary of oil to the motor

@@WIDEBODYNATIONhe 0w20 oils used in all the Japanese cars is a choice made not for the benefit of the engine, but for meeting CARB requirements and ultimately increasing the manufactures “efficiency” rating on a fleet wide basis. Using the thinner oils allows for less parasitic loss and therefore minutely better mpg per vehicle. Like .3% or something. Over the past 10 years, the manufacture domestic markets (jdm) maintained healthier maintenance specs for the vehicles than those provided for foreign markets (usdm). An example of this is Subaru of Japan says to change the oil on a cvt every 35k miles. While the exact same equipment gets a “lifetime oil” 0-change interval in the US market… Likewise, in JDM the cars called for heavier weight and therefore more protective oils than the US market, since the US Implemented CARB. We are all better off running 5w30 in our Subarus and Hondas, as the flow physics have a small margin of difference but provide better protection at operating temp. Any concern about cold weather flow of 5w oil can be remedied by using an oil pan heater and plugging below 30.

@@Jez4prez1 in my 22 Rex, and my 22 passport, I use mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic. I also interchangeably use Kirkland brand full syn in the same weight. The Kirkland brand is just rebadged mobil1. I use those brands because it’s what is available at Costco, and for the best price around my area (6qt mobil1 for $35 or 2x5qt jugs for $31 Kirkland brand). Frankly, you can use any dextros 2 and better with API ratings and the oil will do its job. The important thing is to change it regularly, as it’s protection ability lowers with use and heat cycles. I change my oil every 3k in my turbo car and every 5k in my naturally aspirated vehicles.

The people in the comments laughing about Subaru reliability are forgetting that the WRX/STI are basically most peoples' first or second "fast car". These are kids that plasti-dip everything, mix parts with OTS tunes, drive their cars HARD all the time, and shorten the life of their cars overall with their own behavior. There are plenty of '02-'06 WRX and STIs that are still going strong if they had responsible owners. I pumped 65K miles into a 2019 (in two years) without issue, and am now onto a VB that will do the same. Of course, they aren't TOYOTA reliable; but they aren't really meant to be. They are more complex, with full-time awd and more things to pay attention to. The problem with Subarus is that they require MORE maintenance than Toyotas, but the owners of Subarus are significantly less conscientious. People buy Subarus to take them in the dirt, run them into the ground, and expect them to last forever. Newsflash, these cars are put under more stress and have more parts; they are reliable if paid ATTENTION to, but they have never been designed for people to thrash for 400K miles without maintenance. You can't expect to treat a Subaru the way you would a Camry and have it chug along forever.
@truckinguy92
@truckinguy92 Жыл бұрын
Any vehicle now a days requires that you keep a strict maintenance schedule if you want it to last. There’s just so many complex systems in todays vehicles. I can tell you this will be the last Subaru I buy. The fit & finish is horrible. The sheet metal is super thin, therefore the hood flex is horrible. Every little imperfection in the road and it flexes. The speakers for the stereo are laughable at best and the infotainment console is very glitchy when using it with Apple CarPlay, wired or wireless. I only bought the WRX because I wanted something that was AWD & fun to drive & didn’t break the bank. It’s fun to drive but the aforementioned things really bring it down. It’s definitely not a keeper past the warranty expiring.

Dann, that's what I was thinking. Everyone in the forums say it's blown out of proportion. The pickup has 5 sides. But where is all that silicone when the car is running? What about the small pieces? How much of that RTV keeps coming off. To many variables. Subaru needs to step in. The BRZ's seem to be hit harder by this for some reason.

Yeah, I don't think this is an assembly error by Subaru. Happened on the first delivered BRZs in Japan, is still happening on 2023 models and now the WRX. Subaru has known about it and they've changed nothing. It's less a flaw and more a feature (as ugly as it might be).

@gregaleksandrovsky5806
@gregaleksandrovsky5806 Жыл бұрын
@@WIDEBODYNATION The new oil pickup is a basket shape, which has 5 sides to take in oil from. The one side with the RTV is being blocked but it still has 4 other sides to allow oil to go through. They made it that way because they probably realized what was happening; with that being said, there shouldn't be any oil starvation. There is still plenty of space for the oil to go through, at most a small drop in pressure. This engine has been in the Ascent already (over 250,000 sold) and there hasn't been any issues. We obviously won't know until more miles on the VB but I don't forsee this as the reason to any engines failing.

@gavinbushore4203
@gavinbushore4203 Жыл бұрын
RTV is a sealant, in the automotive application; its used to mate surfaces together to provide an oil seal. Instead of producing gaskets, manufacturers have moved to RTV for cheaper cost of production, stock, and the versatile use. It's thick goo similar to cold toothpaste. It's applied by hand via: straight out of the tube exactly like toothpaste or put into a gun similar to caulking.
