Ay! Very nice investment! Duckies are quite pricey! I've been chatting with Dan a bit myself, trying to save up some cash for pods. Trying to get a few different cultures from different breeders.

I only recently got into keeping isopods myself and I've found your videos to be very helpful. There were some hiccups when I first got the enclosures started (had a mold issue) but now that the springtails are plentiful I am not worried about mold as much (I'm also keeping an eye on the food I put in, seeing how it is doing, but usually it has a few springtails running all over it) I saw Rubber Duckies at the reptile show and I sprung for them, 11 for $100. It was a risk, especially starting out with a species that might be fairly more advanced (especially for an isopod newbie) but I'm glad I got them. I've been keeping their enclosure moist and checking on them (especially being vigilant about mold) but largely leaving them alone. The other day I flipped an old piece of sweet potato over and to my surprise I saw a little baby underneath! It was only a bit larger than the springtails but I could still see the distinctive ducky face when I zoomed in. Today I went in and looked a bit harder. I used my phone to record a zoomed in video, and I counted 3 or 4 babies with my naked eye - but the video has at least 8 or so. Many of them are getting a bit larger and showing the yellow coloration already, so they must've been born some time ago. Such an exciting feeling to see them thrive!

I got some Rubber Duckys, but they were all tiny babies. They said they sent 5 but I only found 3 live. I could not find any dead, do they eat their dead? Oh well, I put them in a smaller 8oz container, 3/4 wet moss 1/4 broken leaves. Your videos have taught me a lot, I rarely comment because I am often taking notes and moving to another of your videos,. I will comment something more often

Isopods do often eat dead isopods, so that could have been what happened. They are sometimes hard to Federer when small, hopefully they show up later.

Is it bad if I put my isopods into a new enclosure while they are shedding?Also how do I know if they are pregnant 🤰
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 5 жыл бұрын
tuqly It is not ideal to move isopods while they are shedding, but they tend to be less vulnerable when shedding than many other organisms are. You can see the pouch on the females’ undersides swell when it is full of eggs and/or mancae. 😊👍

There is a seller online that is selling 5 for $90 which 90 is pretty cheap but I just want to ask you what are your thoughts on getting that small of a colony? I know the normal is about 10-15 so 5 just seems super bare, just want to ask before I drop the money on these guys
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 жыл бұрын
That seems like a decent price...You could always start with that many and then do a bloodline trade later on to deepen the gene pool. There is a greater risk of getting all males or all females, but fairly unlikely.

Creatures Around Me I have kept pet snails in the past, and in fact have some now, though they are currently all aquatic species.
