An Old School Defender imo. I played football on good level in the state & his abilities are fine. I saw him in Benfica too but here he's so different. It's Like Pep has implanted a Defending brain in him in such short time. He doesn't only defend well but he makes others defend well. He'll learn with time as well. What Makes him better than others is his ability of making others great. Look at Zinchenko with Dias on the side & others. Laporte is a very good defender too but he lacks that defending leadership. On defence level , y'all always need a defensive leader.

I’m a City fan, he’s the best defender in the world rn on form. But let’s not pretend he’s currently better than Van Dijk. It’s his first season in the prem, which is such a step up from the Portuguese league. Van Dijk was at Southampton for a bit before reaching his really strong form at Liverpool. This guy wins 57% of his aerial duels in the Premier League, which is utterly atrocious. Somehow wins even less of his ground duels, though that's maybe to be expected given he isn't particularly fast or strong. Pretending he's the best in the world, or close to it, comes across very, very forced. Man City's change in playing style really fooled people last season, the guy is a very solid defender who makes great last ditch blocks and interceptions but he's not comparable to the best in the world, he just has too many weaknesses and not that many standout abilities. People love to pretend he's better than van Dijk, a much taller, stronger, calmer, faster, more dominant player who's also more of a goal threat, who dominates him statistically too, and it just comes across as a comical comparison. Rudiger, Matip and Thiago Silva are all a level above too.
