A good gemologist will tell the difference when the rubies are glass filled. But instruments are needed. This was a wonderful video thanks for putting it up astrogems.

Most of them are not filled with glass. In the last 10 years heat treaters in Thailand have learned they can enhance the very low grade material having a "lot of cracks" by way of using Low Temperature Glass Formulas ( melting at around 900 degrees celsius) and they effectively fill in the cracks and make the matertial look "Much" better. It can be applied to any corundum but mostly to the Mozambique material because 90 % needs to be treated with glass or it looks awfull.

99% of rubies sold in India and Asia is glass filled and heated. They should not be priced more than 1 to 2$ per carat but due to Industry knowledge so poor and still the base material being natural ruby corundum, this people get certificate called Natural Ruby with heating. So much of glass inside already and so much of color done and also the honest guy says they polish too. What is left is everything but ruby. 1$ per carat is fine but 10-18$ is just rip off.

99% would abit too much to say that Asia has the glass filled or heated rubies. I have a vast collection of Natural untreated Rubies of Afghanistan, sold and tested by the clients from the Gia. So there still exist some beautiful natural rubies in Afghanistan, Asia not always show people the dark side. Thanks. Peace

Thank you very much for this. It's very helpful to know the wholesale prices of treated rubies so we can allow for a mark up price for retailers, but not too high that we're being robbed :)

Continued: Before the lower temperature glass filling evolved many Rubies ( mostly Burmese ) where treated with higher temperature glass formulas such as Silica / Borax. It depends on the temperatures the corundum can handle before any negative reactions occur from the heat. The low grade Mozambique material reacts poorly to higher temperatures but lower temps with low melting temp. glass formulas work great. Some Corundum can have a bad reaction to heat at as low as 300 degrees Celcius

Depends on what you mean by "real." The Gemological Institute of America calls glass-filled rubies a "Manufactured Product." In a sense the rubies are not "real" because they are usually filled up to or more than 50% with glass, but they still are real because their original composition is Al2O3 or aluminum oxide (aka Corundum). They are all real but most are treated to make them look prettier to the buyer.

I think the pale yellow sapphires are far more attractive than the citrine looking darker ones. I'm also grateful that the leaded glass filled rubies put beautiful stones within my price range. The dealers I buy from disclose this. A shopper can pick out a stone that has the least surface reaching cracks to minimize the glass content. Since the luster is different between the ruby and the filling material when the stone is tilted and examined under magnification, one can still get a decent ruby.

Most sources of rubies are heat treated anyhow, at least 90 percent because they need to be heated or they do not look so good, or ugly looking actually. There is about 5% of the Mozambique that is left unheated and about another 10 % that is heated without any chemical additives and the rest needs the glass filling to improve the looks, making a major difference. The price is so cheap and that is the give a way.You should ask to have the stone tested anyhow if the seller says it is not treated

Most of the time all you need is a microscope with a power greater than 10x. Whether it be handheld or tabletop, you can easily view traces of lead glass filling by seeing gas bubbles and other inclusions not normally found in ruby. You don't need to be an expert (:
