Calvin (Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing - as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person. -- (C) Fox Searchlight

Just saw the Blu-ray....loved it! What a wonderful film. I thought the ending was perfect, it reminded me of 500 Days of Summer, when he meets Autumn at the end and the whole thing starts over again. I think I loved it just as much as Midnight in Paris. After watching the film I discovered on the extras that Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan are lovers in real life, it's just lovely all-round, they were great together. Grumpy old Alonzo didn't enjoy this film, yeah, that makes sense.

Alonso does not has to like every movie all the other critics like. If he finds the movie cheesy and fake, well it is his opinion, it does not make him a bad critique. He is paid for his opinion, not about promoting the movie.

That was not an accident. Ruby is his ex-girlfriend the way he wanted her to be rather than the way she really was (a real and flawed person.)

I'm definitely with Ben and Christy on this one. Got to see it a few days ago and just loved it. The trailer really underplays how dark this movie gets towards the end. I was pleasantly surprised where they took it.

Alonzo is wrong. It's not shoving the cuteness down our throats. It's a solid Twilight Zone episode. And we do need the scene with the ex-girlfriend to show how Ruby was deliberately made to be the antithesis of her, which reveals his own insecurities.

The guy in the middle is sort of a dolt. Hypercritical, like he had a personal grudge or secretly wants but can't have Zoe Kazan. What have you done? The movie was pretty darned good (the ending could have been a bit stronger, but still good).

totally. He is like a little boy that tries to make the adults take him seriously. He IS the one who made his point in the first few seconds and then continued trying to repeat it for the rest of the video even though we already got what he wanted to say.

"Her job, as a movie critic, is to be more incisive in her appraisal of films than the average moviegoer." dude you just made my case! it is exactly NOT her job to over hype her own expectations and then pass on an emotional overreaction to her own shortcomings as "professional critique". That is what your buddies do. Movie reviews by definition are not personal opinion, but are supposed to be somewhat objective, by the exact standards you rightfully point out not every moviegoer possesses.

Yeah, that was really weird. They didn't even bother to say that he hadn't seen the movies. They just let him sit there with almost nothing to say, which (if you weren't aware of the fact that sometimes one of them sits in on reviews without having seen the movie) made it seem like maybe they were mad at him or he was painfully shy.

I agree with the lady (Sorry, don’t recall her name as I write this), thought the movie was good, but nothing special. Did they ever explain how or why Calvin has the ability to literally create another human? The only thing I didn’t like was towards the end where he is writing right in front of Ruby, basically abusing his “ability”. Like making her act like a dog --- thought that scene was kind of cruel and didn’t really make sense why Calvin’s character would do that, other than maybe it’s him coming to terms with himself that Ruby was not real.

Calvin is an idiot! he treated Ruby like a piece of shit just like he did to Layla, at the end when he meets the "real" Ruby the film only perpetuates Calvin's sick behavior, falls in love in a second for the most stupid reason, only to become a huge asshole, that guy should've ended up in a mental institution. Other than that, cool movie :)

The question for me was how could Calvin mess this up so badly if she was authored by him? I liked that he set her free eventually, but was frustrated that he was so bad at writing her character at times. His writing of her lacked nuance under pressure, considering he was supposed to be a wunderkind of some kind. Maybe that was supposed to be the point; how untenable and impossible our dreams are if we stick to them rigidly. Still, I liked the movie a lot. And the end might have been done before, but that doesn't matter, it was done well here. I didn't think "oh this again". It felt right.

Well you could have said m night shamalayn was a genius after the sixth sense and said he didn't deserve a 5 rating too. Giving a director the benefit of the doubt is downright silly. And good, I'm glad you liked the movie and you have that opinion. So why does it matter what they thought of it?
@alphacause

So Christy isn’t allowed to have a different opinion than what is the popular opinion of TDKR? Her job, as a movie critic, is to be more incisive in her appraisal of films than the average moviegoer. So the fact that she has a different opinion of TDKR than most fan boys doesn't disqualify her for her job. In fact, it is what makes her perfect for the job. The only reason that TDKR is getting a high review from fan boys is because they WANT the film to be great, not because the film is great.

You realize that scores are based on the genre. Justin Bieber and the Dark Knight are not even comparable because of the genres. You automatically assume that if the score is higher the movie is better, which is far from the case. Ruby Sparks was based on the merits of a rom com, while the DKR was based on the merits of a drama and the previous batman movies.

No, you are demonstrating a very limited undersdtanding of "pulling a stunt." It is used the way MajorGloryMan used it all the time, especially by parents objecting to, for example, their kid sneaking out to a party. Obviously, that kid does not want a response to that action, but it would be very common for a parent to say, "After that stunt you pulled last night, I ought to ground you for the rest of your life." Your question reflects a misunderstanding of a phrase and nothing else.

It becomes a stunt when you deliberately give a faux final score that is sure to provoke a vitriolic reaction because said score neither holds up to your track record on other summer blockbusters nor on the moderate reasoning during the video that led up to an extreme score. And then when you receive the exact reaction you set out for in the first place you bitch about it on video, call "commentors" assholes (literally) and also censor the comment section. I call that a stunt, how about you?
