I knew someone who tried out for American Idol. According to him, what they did was line people up in batches who then sang at the first judges (who narrow it down for the celeb judges) at the same time. They (the judges) would then point and be like "you, you and you, everyone else thanks for coming." The parameters seemed to be decent enough and able to be heard through the noise or the odd ones for the first episodes. 4:23 that question reminds me of the American Idol with the girl who had the twin friends who told her she sounded amazing even though they knew she was terrible just to convince her to try out as a prank. Your suspicions about about the audience reactions being cut from somewhere else and pasted into wherever are likely correct - some years back I was a BGT audience member, and in between takes a member of the crew came on as the cameras were still rolling and told us to boo and shout off off off at nothing… I just sat there. They also did the same thing with the judges and told them to say things like ‘brilliant’ and ‘you’ve got what it takes’ to nobody, just so they could capture the footage. Reality TV is so false.
