Full highlights as Kenya's David Rudisha wins Gold in the Men's 800m Final and breaks the World Record with a time of 1.40.91 at London's Olympic Stadium.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

This might be the greatest race ever run, when you look at the individual performances of each runner: There was a World Record, a World Junior Record, 3 National Records, 7 Personal Bests, and 1 Season Best set in this race!! Now in Nov 2019, the World Record and Junior World Record still stand, and 7 of the 8 men who ran that final, never ran faster again! Historic!

Well, yeah, but the thing was, this race started quickly. Rudisha was aiming for a WR in 2012. No one was trying for such a thing this year. And no one really wanted the lead there, hence the 53.76 first lap. It's a bit unfair to compare those two races.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe this race. I saw it live at age 15 and i've come back to watch it every year since. Simply put, there will never be a human better designed to race two laps around the track than Rudisha. It's an event where most of the records have had pacemakers, and the second lap usually a second or two slower. But he ran it wire to wire without anyone in sight and with nearly identical laps. Partially because of this race I became an 800 runner, and although I never broke 2 minutes, I loved it. It truly is an event for the masochists. You run just about as hard as you can...and then you still have to do another lap. You tie up in the last 150m and your legs feel like they're being crushed 5 miles beneath sea level and simultaneously being roasted inside the sun. If you're doing it correctly, you see double and your lungs feel like they're bleeding. When you get it wrong, you can barely move in the finishing straight and everyone passes you. Rudisha ran the absolute perfect half mile race anyone will ever do and he looked completely effortless. I'm not religious but watching this makes me believe in something!

This has got to be one of the highest quality Olympic final distance races ever, or distance races in track & field ever, period. Nick Symmonds went through the 400m split in about 50.4 seconds...in last place! The last place finisher, Osagie, was 1:43.7. Rudisha's world record is one thing, but when someone runs 1:43 and finishes last, that is just incredible.
@daeuri

I don't think you have to qualify it. This was the highest quality Olympic final we have ever seen. For Rudisha to set a world record at this distance when he had to run in heats is just nuts. I revisit this race all the time. I was twelve at this Olympics and it was a weird time for me to watch live as an Australian, but I remember watching this and immediately knowing this would be one of the most impactful track moments in history. His stride, his humility, the fearless competitors, the stunning stadium & crowd... This is an art form. To watch him succeed again in 2016 (despite a horrible lead-up) in similar fashion, to me, confirms Rudisha as a once-in-a-lifetime athlete who is perhaps the best of all time in this event.

I watched this race with great expectations, remember that Rudisha had run 1:41.01 but that was in a race with his great pacer and not after running rounds. Then look at all the others in this race most of whom had to run really hard to get to the Final. It was much better than my very high level of expectation, greatly exceeded. This, for me, is the best track race ever run (and only of of the eight ever ran faster and it as a very young field); as noted even last place 1:43.77 despite fading from running too hard early in front of his home crowd. Only once this century has an Olympic winner (2016, I think) run faster than last place. I doubt that you can say that about any event in the Olympics, and remember that the evolution in shoes has led to records in everything over 400m (and tracks are faster too). I have been observing this sport for 60 years and nothing that I have seen compares. There might better races for the top several but from top to bottom in an event where typically a lot of of people fade especially off any extraordinarily fast pace is more stunning that Rudisha's WR time.

It is not good for everybody to be the same. The world is full of colors and we need people to be different. Bolt does his poses, which is good for the hype of the sport. However, I personally prefer the humility of Rudisha. Some people may prefer the antics of Bolt. So, we need the variety. On another note, I sometimes wished that Bolt would turn back and greet his opponents the way that Rudisha does.

He destroyed the field from gun to tape with no rabbits. Who has ever done this in the two lap event?? This was magical .

How I love watching this race. It's amazing how new athletes burst into the scene. Kenya, the home of talent. Tokyo 2020 gives birth to another 800m champion from the land of raw talent, Kenya. But do I say? 🙏💪💪

Still gives me chills....8 x 12.5 second 100m sprints in a row. The toughest race in track and field in my book

12.62 - But think on this - 13.73 x 15 for the WR in the 1500m.

Beyond the obvious superlatives about Rudisha, he has one of THE most beautiful forms I’ve ever seen. Just looks so graceful.

A decade on now and I still haven't seen a better race. A world record in an Olympic final, leading an 800 wire to wire... absurd. Rudisha is a legend forever

6.5M views as of 6/2019, and it feels like I'm responsible for half of them. Seriously, though, this is an all-time great performance and not solely because of Rudisha's dominance. Top to bottom, the best 800m ever run.

@darrellid it's 8.5M now, January 2021. I came back here just to watch this race, to those words "its fast...this could indeed be something very special... it's quick, very quick...that Olympic record is set to go!....wow we have something very very special on here!...the teenagers are closing in ...none of them are good enough to hold on to him!...we are going to be looking at the time very very closely... what's the time? it's a world recoooord!"
