This review is an in-depth look at the Final Fantasy 7 story, themes and characters. As a milestone video game release for Squaresoft it’s a game that has been subject to equal reverence and criticism. In this clip I look to objectively deconstruct why and weigh the pros and cons of its graphics, gameplay and story. I also suffix with a brief consideration of the Final Fantasy 7 remake which is expected in the not-too-distant future.
Redcoat is a one-man-reviewer on youtube. So if you like my content please show some love by liking, subscribing or sharing. Feel free to comment with your thoughts too as I love discussing these games with people.

Cloud's struggle with DID "Dissociative Identity disorder" was one of the best plot twists in gaming history at the time this game came out. It was extremely rare to see a video game at that time tackle issues involving personality disorders and identity crisis.

@ 16:30 I think the point is far greater than that. It's not about renewable energy per se. It is an advert to centralisation of power in general. It is about people giving up their freedoms to participate in a promised utopia that is granted by others It is about not understanding how dangerous a direction can be if we have no regard for life, individuality, the unknown and just think we can force others to comply in our own ideas of how the future should be formed

Hey Redcoat. Currently laid up with a work related injury, and with current spare time on my hands I've been able to delve back into the world of Final Fantasy and able to revisit your work. I too am always uneasy about fawning over titles with such reverence as this, but much like yourself I can't argue with much of the praise this game receives. You made a great case for your personal favourite, FF8, being the best in the series, but I still hold FF7 closest to my heart and it's for many of the reasons you stated in this review. I think FF7 is the most human of all FF titles I have played and draws the most parallels with our own world, especially in the face of climate change. I also hold Midgar to be the most memorable location in any Final Fantasy title bar none. Hope life is treating you well and look forward to seeing what you choose to cover in the future.
@AlleywayJack
@AlleywayJack 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary, sorry to hear you're injured but hope the downtime is helping out. Getting back into an FF title sounds like a great way to spend the time. I agree that FF7 is a more human title, with climate change/fossil fuel usage being analogous to the real world as you say. But I also think it’s great because unlike many other FF’s, it doesn’t rely on the contrived romantic conclusion between the hero and a female lead to resolve the heroes problems (indeed Aeris death could be considered the antithesis of a romantic conclusion). Cloud’s much more interesting and relatable because of this, and the game manages to avoid the classic ‘Hollywood’ ending that, even FF8 which is my favourite game, tends to deliver with its ending of Squall and Rinoa on the balcony. In fact you’ve made me want to go back and play FF7 now so I might have to get on that this week. Take it easy, and hope you get well soon!

@@AlleywayJack Thanks. I'm slowly recovering, over the worst of it. I liked your take on the love triangle between Aeris, Cloud and Tifa and why you felt Tifa is his true love interest and the better match. I really love the scene between Cloud and Tifa outside the Highwind after you've defeated the Shinra. I've read before that they considered making this scene more suggestive as to the relationship between Cloud and Tifa, but decided against it. I'm glad they decided to go that way because it's leaves the player with a feeling of ambivalence. Also listened to your FFX review the other night and share the same sentiment in regards to the voice acting. It's irritating in large parts and I just don't think voice acting suits the Final Fantasy genre. There was and is something charming about reading the text and conjuring up your own voices for the characters in your head.
@AlleywayJack
@AlleywayJack 5 жыл бұрын
@@garymitrovic2503 Yeah, between the two I did (perhaps controversially) prefer Tifa. But the whole love triangle aspect of the game is just further evidence of Square going against the grain with the FF7 story, allowing interpretation and not giving convenient conclusions, which was really interesting. And yeah, voice acting is an interesting subject. So much personality is communicated by vocal delivery and inflection that - as I think I mentioned in that FFX clip - it takes away the players ability to imagine a character a certain way, which is something I much prefer to do. This subject will be particularly relevant again once the FF7 remake is released, because we have some hitherto untouched characters like Dyne, Don Corneo, Bugenhagan, etc, which each player currently imagines a certain way - but will undoubtedly be altered in perception once a voice actor is introduced. For my part I’d be disappointed if Dyne got a crap actor, because that dude is so cool and complex in my mind right now.

Final Fantasy VII was my first JRPG and first FF game. It's a landmark title in game history for a great many reasons. Square choosing the Playstation platform was also a major turning point. I would argue that Playstation games created a new feel of games moving forward because it was the first time games felt actually cinematic or film-like. While Nintendo64 was more powerful with faster/higher bandwidth via cartridges, PS1 made Square develop "2.5D" due to the restrictions of discs load times. You had more total storage, but longer times to load this data to memory. So they pre-rendered the scenery as somewhat realistic images, and used full 3D character models. They did it beautifully, though. It's hard for me to say for sure whether VII or VIII are better.. Sephiroth is a much more compelling antagonist though.

I to have always thought that the voice was the real cloud as the voice in his head. You even control an "Inner child" if you will, when cloud hands over the black materia to Sephiroth and also as the only sane voice when Tifa is inside his mind. People seem to love the idea that it is Sephiroth in spite of this
@Sawngawkuh
@Sawngawkuh 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct. It's supposed to be Cloud's true self. I think the reason why it got too muddied for some is because, apart from the sometimes messy translation, the voice is accompanied by some eerie and almost sinister music ("Who Are You?") during earlier sections of the game, which tended to also be used for certain other uneasy moments, such as when Cloud stumbles on Jenova's body at Shinra HQ or when Tifa wakes up after Meteor is summoned and everything's gone to pot. As a result, there's a lot of ambiguity there as a result of using that specific piece among scenes involving Cloud wigging out and scenes associated with the nebulous side of the story. Another contributing factor could also just be bad memory. FFVII is a big childhood game for many, but not everyone goes back to replay it, so things tend to get blurry and exaggerated among the fandom, hence why people misremember things like Sephiroth having an Oedipus complex despite barely being that fanatical about his so-called "mother" (especially since, during the present, he knows full well she isn't an Ancient and that his goal has shifted to becoming a god rather than to "take back the Planet for her.").

I'm playing through FF7 right now, having gone through the game maybe three times throughout my teens. I'm finding that it definitely doesn't hold up now, which in part is getting me excited for the prospect of a remake, in hopes that it can address some of the issues I have with FF7 contemporarily. Stuff like D-pad movement in 3D and cursor selection in battles is janky, and a clear byproduct of this game being so early in the Playstation's lifespan. The story, which is interesting when broken down to its most basic beat-by-beat elements, suffers greatly from a poor translation and baffling tonal shifts. One minute you and the party is mourning the loss of an ally, exploring her childhood home and learning the tragic backstory of her mother and father's death while getting another glimpse into Hojo's depravity, only to follow it up minutes later with snowboarding, just to fling head first into more moody melodrama as soon as it's done. The game also becomes incredibly aimless for some time after dumping the player into the overworld. The tight and focused nature of the game's opening hours doesn't sustain itself past Midgar, resulting in a game that at times feels wholly unfocused and a bit confused about what it wants to be. Not saying FF7 isn't an important game, of course, and I greatly enjoyed playing it when I was younger. Age has taken its toll, but I'm still finding enough to like in FF7 to continue pressing on. Currently I'm preparing to take on the side content, beating the weapons and collecting remaining Materia and Limit Breaks, so there's obviously enough there to make me want to engage with it.
@AlleywayJack
@AlleywayJack 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I agree about the dated feel regarding D-pad movement. The janky 4 dimensional movement is frustrating enough - but having to hold X to run instead of walk is also an oversight that they remedied in later games. Although saying that running by default with only 4 directions might have been more annoying… And yeah, I totally get what you mean about the pacing, and the Icicle Inn segment is a prime example you gave - with the exploration of Professor Gast conflicting with that snowboard segment. I’m excited for the remake too… I’m only nervous about the fact they might break up the core story into purchasable season content rather than delivering a cohesive product with ‘secondary’ season content that’s not necessarily important to core story. I’m not sure how they’ll do it - I guess we’ll see.

FFVII has heavy Lovecraft influences, which also serves as an inspiration for the entity in the thing. Jenova specifically with its omnipotent, incomprehensible abilities driving people into insanity but also the experiments on it and the weapons slumbering within the planet are all products of classic cosmic horror.

I beat FF7 last week for the first time. Am 19 at the moment, and yeah, it was a good time(tho the requried grinding is kinda inexcusable)I was enjoying myself from the start, which i wasn't expecting. Most J rpg's are slow and repetitive ,i feel they only get fun when the story takes over, or you get something over powered, but With FF7, It got the balance right. Between the silly humar, the dark setting,lovable characters with some dimensions to them you can't really explain away in a couple of words - Cloud and Barret. All the battle animations were super flashy and impressive with amount of personlity and force they showed with the little pixles count they had. Especially the limit breaks or summoning Bahamut, lifting the enemy into the heavens and destroying them miles up in the skys. The story tho, is the highlight. In FF7 you are an eco terrorist. It wastes no time dropping u into the action. Love how fast paced the game is and while yeah your the good guys saving the world. Humanity was the ones that put the earth in danger. So if holy removes us, or maybe forgives us is unclear. Its ambiguity is great - Shame advent children, and square enix as a whole are dead set on ruinning it

Hey, thanks for the comment. Wow, you're 19, so this game must have come out before you were even born. It's crazy, I can just about remember it being released. Anyway, that's great you enjoyed it, it's really interesting to me to hear how younger people react to old games, particularly FF games, because they've changed so radically from how they used to be. Have you tried any of the other PS1 FF games like 8 or 9 ?
@nemeru3352
@nemeru3352 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i wasn't even born when it came out. but .For the time it must have been a game chancer to have such a complete package, with a strong villian, a messages about the planet in a video game no less .Moral .ambiguity. and of course how they Handled "Her" death. It was sudden. One second she was there, the best healer and potential love interested of cloud. Next she's dead. and then THAT music plays. It got me. Also hearing why the story has such sorrowful tone, becuz of the creator's mother, passing away. Really shows. 7 has alot of heart. Still plagued by random incounters which drive me insane but still. The whole mind fucking twist about cloud. projecting himself onto his friend. Never actually being in Soldier. Great stuff ' No i haven't tried them.They worth checking out? 9 in particular looks real pretty for a ps1 title.probably cuz it came out at the end of the console's life cycle. Currently going through 6 actually. Can't say it compares very well to 7. It lacks a opening section as impressive as Midgar. I saw someone suplexing the ghost train on youtube. That was impressive.
@AlleywayJack
@AlleywayJack 6 жыл бұрын
I would definitely recommend 8 and 9 - and yes 9 looks real nice, quite a distinct art style that comes across well even on PS1 and the characters were given more mannerisms and intricacies with their movement which made them feel less 'blocky' than 7 or 8. I'm also playing through 6 right now. It certainly starts off differently to 7, but I'm not far in enough to make a formed opinion. Very different in terms of having a large playable party etc though.

In my humble opinion, one of the few things the devs did wrong with this game was killing off the best character (who was also the main love interest), hopefully they fix that in the remake or Cloud will never find peace or defeat his inner demons "I have traveled so far to find so little meaning in tragedy" -Meaning In Tragedy, As I Lay Dying- Kinda fitting, don't you think?

@@AlleywayJack To me he never finds peace in the OG either, especially if you think about his last words: "I think I can meet her in the promised land", meaning that he never moved on even in the OG. The devs are getting older and as much as I don't like some of the changes to the story this is their last chance to give those 2 a happy ending, to me FF7 was about Cloud overcoming his past failures and defeating his inner demons and that's why Aerith's role was so crucial in his development but when she died he lost everything and never moved on so the whole journey he's been through kinda felt pointless to me and the game lost its meaning and purpose since he reverted back to his old depressed self (and I certainly do not blame him for that, everybody else in his position would have probably done the same), I mean, why would I save the world if that same world took everything away from me?

Thanks for the comment. More recently I've tried complementing the pure audio with graphics and footage as I'm conscious a lot of people weren't liking this format. Sorry!

Are you British? I find it funny that you find that a corporation could not control a nation to the point that it has its own military like shinra does in midgar. This is a very western view as we are very individualistic and would balk at the concept that a corporation should have that much power. Do some research into South Korean society and economy. Samsung and Hyundai have huge control in South Korea and the people have no issue with it even going to the point of going with the fascade that the president of Samsung is still alive even though he most likely passed away in Samsung hospital in 2014 because his passing would result in vast restructuring of Samsung due to South Korean law.
