I feel like I know what Rufus is talking about here, and I love him for writing this song. I had a father who was never satisfied with me, always telling me how I needed to be different, how I wasn't enough. Unfortunately he also felt he had a right to be mean and angry and say whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. This is hardly unusual, the entitlement to be mean and angry is strong in men in America of a certain age. It comes from pain, a lot of it, but that doesn't make it ok. The spirit is strong, you stick up for yourself and fight back, at least that's who I am and I love myself for it. Until you mature and realize that loving yourself is the only way, finding your people and loving yourself a bit extra for the part your parent didn't offer. The beautiful gay community understands this better than any, I imagine. I will never convince my father that I am worth praising, that I'm a good person, that I'm worthy of a more loving stance; not through arguing with him and not towards being extra loving with him, I've tried both, and it's his loss. I have found plenty of love from other humans, I'm good. Thank you Rufus, it's so helpful to have your music, such beautiful, beautiful music, none more beautiful. Beautiful music, beautiful singer, so awesome! And your openness, singing about the "real" as it is for you, has helped me sing it too, and in so doing heal myself. Feeling my world reflected back to me through art is healing too. Rufus is a true and BRAVE artist. So hard to find. Enough songs about falling in and out of love, we have enough of those, wish more artists went deeper like Rufus. ❤

I’m angry with everyone I know for allowing me to get to such a great age without knowing there was Rufus Wainwright in this world.

Genius angel. The best best best best best. A voice that comes along once in a century, with the writing and composing brilliance to match it. He turns me into a puddle on the floor

There is no one else that you can compare him to. He is his own genre, such an amazing voice and songwriting comparable to Leonard Cohen who I believe had a greater influence on him musically than either of his parents. Both one of a kind.

Between this and “Bloody Motherfucking Asshole” by Martha, I can only surmise Loudon is basically the Canadian folk equivalent of Alec Baldwin.
