I have never been able to move past this Skinstad story. Mallet will always be remembered for dropping one of the most successful bok captain for a province player.

Gary stood out as one of our most memorable and hard working Springboks captains. Pity politics were allowed to mess up a fantastic leader and team at their best.

Gary Teichmann was my childhood hero. He's the reason why I always wanted 8 on my back even when I played flank. I met him once in the very early 2000s at a golf day that my dad was playing at. I went up to Gary in the clubhouse afterwards to said hi, but he brushed me off. I'm not going to lie, that tarnished my image of him big time.

So sorry to hear that. Might have just had a bad day, everything I've heard about him shows him to be a truly nice guy.

Nice Chat, Hi Gary, you prob wont remember, but I recal you as a 10/12year old school boy at CJR. I was dating your sis Robs at the time. Had a lot of time for your family especially your Mom, she was an amazing tennis coach and person. When I started following rugby closer later on I was delighted to hear you had made Springbok capt and you did us old Rhodies all very proud. Respect to you.... Take care. Thanks Peter

One of the great injustices of Springbok Team selection. Nothing against Skinstad, but Gary's leadership would have won us the Worlf Cup.......

I was living in Durb’s at that stage and rugby at Kings park was fantastic. Made the tour to RWC 99 unhappy that Mallet had disrupted a team by placing Joost as Captain, truly ridiculous decision at that level to break the ranks, and I never forgave Mallet for that decision, while it took him years to realize the mistake. For that reason, would never want to see him back in Bok rugby, too self important for that role. Teich deserved to be in team and play based on the Siya model, push to get on top but be there for the leadership he devoted during some difficult times. And then the poorest of the top teams took advantage of the situation to win the tournament. Only to go to the lowest point for bok rugby with Strualli, thankful Jake with many political issues rescued Bok rugby. Thankfully again Rassie has truly transformed the team to represent all and deliver the best results in my lifetime. Guess we now have to deal with 4 years of buildup to RWC 27 and the pains of keeping players within Bok squad.

I think we shouldn't be too harsh looking back after so many years. I think Gary has been extremely gracious about it all, showing what a gentleman he's always been. I also think Nick was probably under incredible pressure from all sides and might have listened to some wrong advice at the time, or perhaps had to cave to something or someone - who knows? We have seen what an inspirational captain can do, and we'll always have to imagine what might have been. I think what Rassie and Jacques has achieved is absolutely incredible - a story no-one would have believed could ever be possible. Thank you for watching with us.

Gary was a true gentleman and loved by many so I can understand the push back against Nick Mallet who in my mind was the greatest Springbok coach never to have won a World cup courtesy of a Steve Larkin drop goal in injury time. Larkin had never kicked a drop goal in international rugby and never kicked another since that semi final but cruelly it was enough to knock us out. Mallet stuck to what he believed in, that Gary was not at his best and Skinstad was a revelation and first prototype super sub game changer. What would u do as coach. Show loyalty to a popular senior player or pick the players that u think can do something special. History will show he chose the latter. All 3 are heroes in my eyes for different reasons. As Moaner van Heerden used to say " Cowboys don't cry". What happened, happened, what will be, will be and it is what it is. We have the joy of knowing we own 4 x Rugby World Cups but we earned it despite suffering and sadness along the way

Gary was such a great player & captain. Granted he was injured & not playing much rugby in the lead up to the 99 WC and probably not the most in form no.8 at the time but he certainly deserved to make that WC squad. I was a big Bobby fan and I think that a lot of supporters may have unfairly had a go at him (he didn’t select himself, although he was not playing good rugby then as well due to injury). Nick Mallet we mustn’t forget probably had the most pressurized coaching role in SA sport as the Springbok head coach & may have made a decision based on feeling rather than the greater good so we can’t be overly harsh on him, he did a lot for Bok rugby. I hate that a fine human being like Gary had to be the one to be cut like that but SA rugby did learn & make sure that in later years, key leaders & role players like John & Siya weren’t thrown to the curb when injured or not performing at their best.

Tiaan was the best no 8 in the country in 1995 but wasn't picked...not fair. Bobby was the best no 8 and rugby player in South Africa at the time and was picked...fair. A Springbok team is supposed to be the 15 best players in there positions in South Africa...when personalities and clicks are selected that criteria is thrown out of the window.
