Completely written off in the build up, Steve Borthwick's England produced a heroic performance against South Africa in their Rugby World Cup Semi Final but ultimately fell just short losing courtesy of a mammoth penalty kick from Handre Pollard.

These guys are brilliant. As a South African that was such a tough game to watch. England had us and I was dead quiet for 65min. They pick and executed a game plan to the T. Unfortunately for them we have quality in depth where it mattered. I had a feeling we might struggle to get up again after such a big game against France and that's the way it played out. We just managed to find a way. Respect to both teams.

I don't give a F... what people say, I watch this game now 3 times, England played very structured and bloody well. They keep all the South African gates closed except for one ( ONLY ONE MISTAKE ) mistake, and hereby I do not want to blame or shame, I want to highlight the gate that England open for the Boks to sniff a gap for the win. Freddy Stewardt should have NEVER kick the up and under and with this kick it to the stronger field position of SA. He should have kick it deep and in the middle. And that mistake / kick cost England the game and the final, So leave Ben o Keefe out of this, as he give 70% of the 50/50 calls to England. ( Especialy the first half ) England number 8 and Farrel and Stewardt were excellent so please give them credit. Saying this, if England win, Stewardt was hands down the man off the match. Now - Remember the Springboks have in every world cup since 1995 ONE BAD game, 95 France - Semis, 99 - Aussie Semis, 03 NZ - Quarters, 07 Tonga - Group, 11 Ausies - Quarters, 15 Japan - Group, 19 Wales - Semis and for sure now England in Semis,

The ONLY reason they are bitching about the South African gameplan is because they cannot emulate it with success. Do you really think if the Aussies or the Irish had the physical strengths and gifts the Springbok side has at their disposal, that they WOULDN'T use it and play to those strengths? As long as what the Springboks do is not contrary to what is stipulated by rugby union rules, what use is bitching about whatever tactics or gameplans they employ? Those "pundits" are just ridiculous and sound like a bunch of nagging women more than anything else.

I also thought O’Keefe handled both the quarterfinal and this semi quite well and has received way too much uninformed and biased criticism from French and England supporters. Like any ref, some of his calls may have been questionable, but in both matches I thought he got the big ones right and communicated them clearly. After Angus Gardner and the Georgian fellow whose name’s not on the tip of my tongue at the moment, he’s been one of the fairest officials, and the TMO he’s worked with, also a Kiwi, Whitehouse, has been superb and unlike some of the others, he didn’t needlessly interject himself into the game to review every rugby collision and helped the game flow.

Obviously it was a devastating loss from an English point of view. The result wasn't what English rugby wanted, but it was the performance that we needed. I felt immense pride watching England during that game - a feeling that I hadn't felt since WC2019. It was a heroic performance. On another day, we could have edged it. For the first time, I feel Steve Borthwick is the man to lead us. I don't really have any concern with our backs, the talent is there and we will utilise those talents more going forward. Definitely more so when it's not as wet as it was on Saturday evening. We need some refinements in certain areas; i'd argue up front really. Our front row needs a lot of work, as does a succession plan for Jamie George. If England can get this sorted, I think that the forwards will considerably improve with decent coaching and continuity in selection. All in all, the future is very bright for England. Lastly, South Africa dug in brilliantly and deserved to win. If they do go on to beat New Zealand, (although I don't think they will), no-one could ever argue that they don't deserve it.

It certainly is currently one of the best channels to watch. You guys are top notch in your feedback and passion for the game. To many people are ruining the love for the game and I know there are issues that need sorting. Rugby is awesome, and is played in many different ways. That makes it exciting and different. I feel for the referees today. They deserve so much credit, the stress and the abuse they deal with is not fair. Decisions will go for you and against you sometimes. I feel for England, they played brilliant rugby on the weekend and the Springboks had to dig deep. I think the Springboks have shown this Stronger Together belief and it has pulled us through. I fear for the final. I think we will be dead tired and battered and NZ are peaking and playing brilliant rugby again. This is a great rivalry and I hope the game is great on Saturday. What's worse for him... being the one left on the field while you cost the team? *OR* Having your band of brothers say 'its not working out for you today, why dont you sit this one out?' It changes nothing about how much respect and buy-in he has from his coaches and teammates! 😊 (and fans, for that matter). AND... they've played him to start in both knockout games so he can build the experience! As Siya said...If we win, he will win too! 🏆 But first, we need to get there... and everyone has a role to play in the journey! 😊🇿🇦

Sinckler always has his feet slightly too far back even at the set. Whether that's because of his previous back problems or not I don't know, but it just means he's now a pretty weak scrummager because he has no forward force from his hips at the initial shove.

I am a huge Bok supporter and I hate the way Willie Le Roux has the verbals not with just the opposition but with his own teammates. Choose just about any game over the last decade and he is mouthing off at just about anyone in ear shot, often, amazingly enough when HE is the one has just fumbled and shanked a kick or missed a tackle, not the other guys. I hope he is a nicer bloke in person than he appears to be to the outside observer like me. So what if England players have been over-celebrating on the tiniest of victories. The in the face celebrations are uncalled for, unnecessary and not in keeping with the ethos that the Bok team professes to be about. An ethos we keep being reminded of from Kolisi, Neinaber & Ersamus.

Just one extra comment on the scrums, the first scrum where Ox Nche was on, Marler and Cole were both still on and it was probably the most or second most dominant scrum for SA. They are undeniably better scrummagers than Sinckler et al and were 50 mins into a game by this point, but it really does boil down to how destructive Nche is at the moment in the scrum. I am convinced SA starts with Ox, Bongi, and maybe even Trevor this weekend, to try get ascendancy from the start of the game

I think it's worth mentioning that England's game plan was the rugby equivalent of football's 'parking-the-bus' and not a style that should grace a WC final. Do you not think that it was a one off tactic given the conditions and the opposition, a tactic which reduced the mighty , all conquering Boks to panic mode. South Africa have had four years with the same coaching set up , England four months. No matter what the conditions this England team shouldn’t have got anywhere near the South Africans but they did and they had them rattled. The tactics nearly payed off and the Boks met their physical match right up until the benches cleared. England were being told they wouldn’t get out of the group and came within three minutes of being in the final. Credit where credit is due for crying out loud.

@@Trueblue222 Of course it was a 'tactic' because they couldn't rely on anything else. I stand by the original point: if the only way to win a match is effectively negate your own 15-man game you don't really have much of a game to start with. If you did you would use it. The problem with this, as you rightly say 'one-off tactic' is that it will excuse so much of the ineffective, pedestrian dross that has gone before it. England's group had a poor Argentina on the night, a lacklustre Samoa, Japan and Chile. They made hard work of it against Fiji in the quarter final playing their normal game. This 'one-off' performance will seal contracts for coaching and manangement staff and convince the RFU they are doing the right thing - and England will finish perhaps third or fourth in the 6N and nothing will change. I thought England showed some real gusto at the breakdown and really matched up to the Boks but there was nothing else outside of that contest.

Add to this the constant running on field of coaches disguised as medics. SA was equally guilty of this and it squeezed the life out of the game. Once O’Keefe chased them all off under the threat of penalty in about the 60th minute the game developed a bit of shape and SA took charge. I genuinely hope Argentina shows up on Friday and runs England off the pitch.

As an Englishman I think my dark thoughts looking forward are this was Englands best performance. This was at something like 96% output, and we lost to an SA who were maybe ambling along at 75%. We have nothing more to give, and hence we are quite rightly down at no. 6 in the world. How do we get to no. 4 in the next two years? Who knows, but we will need at the very least 3 new props, 1 or 2 centers and 1 winger. Unless Steve finds them we have no chance of challenging any of the top 4. Steve and the English clubs have their work cut out.

I said it elsewhere. England dominated everything in the first 60 minutes - possession, territory, scrums, lineouts, mauls, breakdowns and in the air - but they didn't use that dominance to put the game away. They were too conservative to win the game. The Boks were dire in the first 60 minutes, their energy levels were low and their accuracy was non-existent. Once the bench came on, they upped the Boks' energy levels and accuracy, scored a try and were back in it. I get it. Borthwick has gone back to the basics, a la Rassie in 2018, and is looking to build up from there. But they really lost a great chance to be in the final

The repetitive nature of the contest was pretty dull. The tight scoreline gave it some drama, but a good spectacle to watch it was not. England had zero line breaks. Zero. Pity these don’t do the commentating. The commentators never mentioned O’Keefe favouring England early on which lead to the Boks looking poor and you couple the wet ball and they lost heavily in first 30min. After some strong talks by Siya, Ref was more balanced and the fight back was on. I liked ‘OKeefe but after this game, he is off my list, the referrals have been great in the 2023 RWC, he seems to refuse to use this fix for poor / unnoticed decision. I saw too many tackles that were at least a yellow card up to this stage of RWC. Great review, honest and knowledgeable.

The most unbiased review I have heard of this game....I know it's difficult to except defeat from the jaws of victory and usually the losing teams supporters usually finds excuses for the loss and it could have been South Africa. But these guys were on point in this review.Appreciated your honesty....thanx guys!!!!
