If it was a clean victory like Twickenham or earlier match that would have been the case but it clearly wasn't we need to stop acting like it's acceptable to allow matches to be decided based on questionable refereeing decisions.

@@mugithti Which questionable decisions were they? NZ lost because they passed up several kickable penalties, and failed to capitalise on the territory. They missed a conversion and another penalty - you cannot blame the officials for orchestrating that - if anything the All Blacks had more opportunities to win but didn't take them.

Whatever. It was clearly backwards out of the hand. Momentum in the tackle might make it look forward. But the ball can travel forwards and not be a forward pass. So long as the motion of the hands are backward and the ball exits flat or back

Tmo viewed it with a fine tooth comb like they did on every nz play. They didn't want to allow it. They out spoke Barnes on several plays that would have been a different result. It's wasn't so much the ref it was the tmo ability to be one sided.

It’s only a tiny minority blaming the ref. From what I’ve seen, the vast majority of fans have been very chivalrous in victory and defeat. Let’s celebrate that and be proud of our sport.

Also superior win/loss record against EVERY other Intl rugby team. With a population of 5 million NZ is easily one of the greatest overall sporting nations on earth. Not just Rugby.

So how does having 62 million people against 5 million give South Africa the advantage? In this tournement and on the night, South Africa was the better team. Blaming the referee or anything else, makes them come across as very bad losers. The Springboks had to play in a very hostile environment, especially after the French game. They stuck to their guns and prevailed in the end, and that's why they're 4 times world champs, even though they played one world cup tournament less than the majorrugby playing nations.

In comparison the ABs have a very limited budget. This final was between the only two coutries that have rugby as their national sport, in all the other participants rugby is way down the list in popularity. On paper the Boks & Abs should always be in the final, because its your No 1 sport.

Correct: "Touch of defender in penalty box" during last WC was a travesty and now we have the "hand touch the ball in the box" travesty in football/soccer. Rugby Union as you point out has similar problems with the tech use in game as well and the rules are not fit for purpose with so much referee interference required...

Current Rugby Rules are excessively technical and not realistic to the live-motion-action in real-time of players in multiple scenarios not encoded by the rules 2. Interpretation of Rules variance by different referees 3. Excessive use and intervention of video-referee again leading to massive swings and arbitrary decisions (due to legal issues ultimately) To say "The Ref" was bad is missing the enormous scope of the problems with Rugby Union as evidenced in the final of ALL THE ABOVE. In that respect you're right, it is not the individual referee that was the problem but the enormous problems above DETRACTING from RUGBY BEING PLAYED BY PLAYERS on the field/pitch. In that respect the final was a massive failure whoever won it in terms of results on a scoreboard because that score reflects so much arbitrary external intervention and much less actual merit via playing rugby. A tragedy.

I’m ‘old school’ in that I’m all for the physical contact element and wouldn’t even have yellow-carded Sam Cane OR Kolisi if the game were to be played by ‘my’ rules. Neither action was deliberate. Sam is a ‘clean’ player; a credit to your country. I’m genuinely sorry for him but also pleased because your classy and respected fans have gone easy on him. Frizell’s offence was worse than either, in my opinion. (Possibly because I was once really badly injured by a dropped shoulder.) But the worst offence was Etzebeth’s leading elbow to the face. By its nature, that form of assault - let’s call it what it is - is NEVER accidental and every bit as dangerous as head on head. Etzebeth should have been red carded - on the field never mind TMO. But that brings us back to the safety issue. Rugby can never be truly ‘safe’. But I can certainly appreciate why the powers that be are trying to make it as safe as possible. It’s very sad that thoroughly decent blokes such as Sam Cane are burdened in that way. But I don’t see it as a ‘tragedy’ as such. Surely a real ‘tragedy’ would be the what might occur as the result of a head-on-head. Hope that makes sense. Best wishes

@@robertcottam8824 I forgot about the leading forearm: I saw that in real time so you are right to point it out...... Safety is one thing but the whole "Stack" in Rugby Union has so many problems with it. The tackle type is much harder in Union than League where the players make standard tackles a lot more (they get penalized for the hip-drop too btw) so that's already a tricky area. Size and frequency of collisions is higher and as said more messy in Union too. The ruling is just legal ass-covering however and inconsistent eg above... I've proposed solutions in another thread elsewhere for Rugby Union that I think solve half the problems.

You need to get your eyes checked mate, and read the rules about the new head contact mitigation. Sam never had his legs bent to lower his body. Kolisi's legs were bent and his initial contact was not on head. I do agree that the TMO should never have the power to upgrade from yellow to red. Rather sanction the player after the match following a quorum decision be a panel of refs.

What you're really saying is the rules are broken in Union due to real-time collisions being stoicastic ie no-one to blame but because of legal issues with concussion and brain damage the officials are covering their arses with an unrealistic rule that's so arbitrary and stoicastic it will swing a match one way or another.... Stick to your literal reading of the rules however and you can satisfy yourself you're following the rules and are right while avoiding reality.

What is PLAYING BETTER RUGBY in your opinion. Running rugby maybe BUT lotsa people like POWER RUGBY. IT ALL DEPENDS ITS SUBJECTIVE.

Then statistically you could in fact get a more objective data set on what constitutes good rugby... it's not hard to work out what features such matches/videos would produce for people to rate with the highest ratings... Throw in how much impact the referees/officials have with downgrading...

I'm done watching rugby honestly, this world cup had too many questionable calls and this ref in particular seems to have a pre written script, unless IRB make it easier to interpret the rules, refs will continue to ruin the sport, I don't have it in me to invest time and energy following a team anymore and this will be the case for neutrals going forward at some point the sport will struggle to stay professional and will only attract fans who have skin in the game.

​@@Egill2011it wasn't a "high tackle", it was a high tackle. Shoulder directly to the head, Cane upright, no level change. Kolisi was bent at the waist, initial contact on the shoulder and rode up. Penalty for sure. Yellow? Maybe. Try was disallowed because of a clear knock on at the lineout. I know you're used for your sides to get away with it in SR, but maybe that's where you have to focus your frustration.

The ref was ok the red card rule and TMOs dictating the game is ridiculous. The game is ruined by constant penalties and reviews.

Oh no doubt I also don’t like the mark it slows the game down I know why they do it but I’d prefer the game to just flow but the red card was the right decision and to be honest the kolsi tackle was only a yellow as we was bending and most of the force went to the shoulder then there was head to head. With the Sam Cane one it was straight head to head with no bending at the hips and all the force was to the head.

No it wasn't a forward pass. You need to learn the rules. The ball went backwards from the hands of the person passing it. It's a weird rule but it is right and so that wasn't a forward pass. There have been many example in games. The ref even explained it in the game.
