Heartbroken Irish fan here. I rewatched the game on Monday, stopped and started it. I think Sam Cane had a brilliant game, as did Savae. I won’t name names, but I thought 3-4 of my Irish lads did not have their best games, and I feel sad for them. I also thought that we looked tired towards the end even though we battled on, hats off for that!!

I don’t understand why anyone would have a problem with rieko’s hand behind the ear. These players give everything they have to the sport. They’re passionate. Driven. Work extremely hard. They’re going to show that in performance and celebration. It’s what gives this sport such good stories. The same way the abs remember POM comments to Sam cane. I hope the Irish team remember that and use it as fuel to make the next match even better and more intense

Rugby fans, especially the older ones, are too set in their ways and want everyone to just be robots and celebrate winning in the approved way, shit gets heated out there playing a nothing game on a Saturday morning in small town NZ, can't imagine how charged up you would get battling in a tournament for the best team in the world

Cape Town here, I think your coach has done a good job. The current AB side is as good as ever. That game at Twickenham reminds of some Bokke performances where the ball will roll the wrong way the entire game. It just happens occasionally.

Gosh this comment section is toxic. I am a nz'er and while i hoped we would beat Ireland i respected our position as underdogs and knew the game would be close and we likely could be knocked out. Nz won the game by not dropping ball, defending for their lives and individual performances of the year by many senior players. Ireland still had their chances to win but ultimately didn't have their best game and couldn't get over the line. I think experience of past wc losses (as favourites) helped the abs and coaching/tactics was on point. But let's not get carried away, Ireland and France are two very good teams and deserve to be respected. Also, we haven't won anything yet and need to focus on a fired up Argentina team in front of us this weekend. let's respect ireland for being the benchmark and acknowledge that their dominance is what raised us up for our outstanding QF performance.

One of the key desicions was the front row. Nepo and Ofa have been good servants but dont bring much else. The current group are competitive at the ruck and in the loose. So good to see the selections made that helps the team alot

I also thought, like the Sir, that the North vs South rivalry is dead, and then the media and pundits from up North started talking about a Northern Hemisphere Semi-Final lock out, and I realised, they're still watching rugby like it's 1999. Ireland fan here, felt weird to be confident of beating all blacks in a quarter final. But deep down knew it would always come down to who performed on the day. Said to my friend day before the top 4 teams in world there is so little between them either could win by 5 point margin, at end of day Ireland made unforced errors, fucked line out, fucked scrum due to not understanding Barnes interpretation, fucked breakdown due to barnes wankyness again, all blacks made zero handling errors and were absolutely brilliant in defence and clinical in attack. Congratulations to them. Hope they win it all now

'No one expected the ABs to win' I am from the half of Kiwis that always back our men in black. After the SA win by Ireland i felt we would get them. They put a lot into that game and should of loss if SA kicked straight. Ireland dont rotate their squad and if they didnt lose to us they would of either the semi or GF as they would of been to tired

Sorry Mils you will never know the pain of us Irish, you have reached the holy grail, we haven't even past the quarters, that's not even relevant, if we lost in the final it would be the exact same feeling. You guys have repeatedly had teams good enough to win a world cup, we have only had this team. Re Sam, he was immense, I watch a lot of Southern Hemisphere rugby and Super Rugby and this is by far the best he has ever played. As JK said every NZ player was immense, we had a few that didn't hit their top levels. Well done NZ, going to be a great final

what do you mean? we came into the cup expecting to win it, no one here cared about rankings because we've lost plenty of times ranked first, we ARE the best team on the day and i fully believe no one can beat us, losing is a shock every time. we didnt come here expecting to lose to anyone and even after losing to france the feeling was if we play bad we'll lose but if we play good nobody could beat us, this is the truth i might be massively biased but thats how it is here 🤷‍♂

Strip Kirwin of his knighthood. In the last six minutes, NZ played a patient, disciplined, and clean defensive strategy. If anything, Barnes (and in particular, the sideline ref) was turning a blind eye to a turnover 1.5 minutes before Whitelock's.

Whitelocks turnover was illegal never released the tackle he held on to the player. So i dont get this narrative Barnes was against NZ. The refs in all the matches have been poor and inconsistent in my opinion. nz or sa fans after the final whoever loses will blame the ref till the cows some home.

Its important to note that one of the core responsibilities of being an all black is to leave the jersey better than when you inherit it. So for the past two years those abs players have been scrutinised and compared to prev players. Imagine being compared to steve hansen, carter, nonu & conrad smith and mccaw? If you understand this, then its not hard to imagine how driven the players were to rectify the team record v ireland.

I really don't understand the all black mentality about the haka being disrespected. it is a literal war dance challenging the opponent so for the life of me cant understand kiwi fans upset at being challenged during the haka. the whole point is to challenge it. having said that, the all blacks were superb in this game and the better team and ireland looked tired. i was routing for the all blacks after this game. this game and France vs RSA were the best games of the tournament. the final was good but these 2 quarter finals were the best games of the tournament

@@mrwaltermathews well it was closer than I thought in the end but look at it this way... 7 times Ireland got to a quarter final and 7 times they failed to progress - some of those teams were at least as good as this team, arguably better... so that’s fairly rational in my book. And then the French were always gonna mess it up - it’s France, even more chance of screwing up at home, I’m surprised it wasn’t worse to be honest... SA aren’t all that... obvs NZ would smash Argies... but tomorrow will be very close... England could just edge it if SA kicking isn’t up to scratch!

The four nations is probably not stronger: Australian rugby is falling apart, Argentina have all their best players in Europe are rarely win a game, South Africa we are told don't take it seriously as they are preparing for the world cups only, and only New Zealand ever win it (almost). This year's RWC was undermined by the fact that the draw was made years ago and the seedings did not reflect the who the best sides were in 2023. This is reflected in the blow outs at SF level in RWC. It will be interesting to see if the new global rugby league competition is more of a leveler. It may give the NH side a fairer crack of the whip.

Lol....the only reason England got to semi is because Bill Beaumont runs rugby and England gets favourable draws...Scotland , France and Ireland are much better than England, yet they out...IRB needs to look at this. System isnt working....Northern and Southern hemisphere even t Refereeing different and interpret laws differently...something has to change

Jeff couldn’t be more wrong that North v South is a thing because of different styles. There is simply no style that applies uniformly across NZ, RSA and Arg for example. The same logic applies to Ire, Fra, Eng, Wal and Sco. And in any event, RSA players now either play in a NH tournament (URC) or they play in Europe/Japan (I.E. Northern Hemisphere!) The NH still need to aspire to the levels of NZ and RSA at World Cup level, but it is nothing to do with style of play. Regarding the Haka, why do NZ expect “fans” to respect it. Fair enough to expect the opposition team to respect it., but not fans. It’s like opposition fans booing a kicker taking a penalty; it would be nice if they didn’t do it, but you can’t realistically expect all fans on all occasions to not do it…

Well, the draw certainly was the worst the Irish could have faced, with all the hard games in the early stages. Romania were the punch bag, but we were told Tonga could be a banana skin (they turned out to very disappointing). Full teams were required against South Africa and Scotland. Then New Zealand or France. Had we been on the other side of the draw though...

Get a grip mate, if you cant be confident after 17 wins on the bounce then when can you?. You were lucky to have wayne barnes as referee and we handed the game to ye making stupid errors. Sexton missing a simple penalty which would have allowed us to be going for a drop goal at the end and kelleher leaving the maul too early when he was held up on the line. You were at 100% we were at 80 after a grueling group. You havent become world beaters. This AB team can be great on a day but are not consistant.
