I've had many of the Rugers over the last 50 years, and not as many of the Marlins. I've always felt that the Marlin is a trimmer, sleeker rifle that fits your hand and balances perfectly and that is what I have today. I actually like the tubular feed better, it's easier to load for older hands, gravity does it all instead of having to force rounds against a spring loaded follower. Thanks for the video!

I am buying a Marlin 60, so I thought I'd watch and see what you have to say. A few of your points Marlin vs Ruger,..are justified, BUT the Marlin has a few points that are 'less' than Ruger, and there is one main reason for this. This point : It keeps Marlin at a better ( read that lower ) cost . Now here perhaps, is where I get the 'hater' replies,...Ruger is too expensive! Now let me explain,... when you compare real value rifle for rifle, the Marlin will win. Better accuracy,...smoother operating, less costly to maintain etc. The bolt hold open on last round fired on the Marlin is a real plus. IF the Ruger worked so well, why is that after market folks make a lot more items to make your Ruger 'work' better? The Marlin will work better , right out of the box, it seems. All you Reviewers seem to say this. Thanks for this comparison. P.S. I do own a Ruger 10/22,....I too love .22 rifles and will add the '60' to my collection.

The assertion that the marlin is more accurate is something I hear occasionally and a lot of people have commented here. I have a 10/22 and I have won lots of shooting competitions with it. This is shooting against people who have Marlins, CZ's, Brownings, the list goes on. I wonder if I have the worlds best old rusty banged up 10/22.

But officer i know my gun is off a bit ...i didnt mean to kill him but did you see them groups they were tight. Bunch of Idiots. Its not groups that count ...its accuracy !!!!!!!!!!!!! I always hear idiots talking about groups and they are nowhere even close to the intended target.

...it's the rifling in the barrel, there is a noticeable difference, the Marlin's rifling is much more precision cut. If you Lap the Barrel on the Ruger, that will bring it up to the level of the Marlin...but then again, the after market barrel's for the Rugers are a'PLENTY and will get MUCH better accuracy than the Marlin. Noteworthy is the fact that swapping out barrels on a Ruger is SUPER easy to do. I have to say the Stock is really nice on that Marlin. ;)

I own both. and the marlin has far better accuracy than the Ruger. Like Dwight was saying the micro grooving and also longer barrel helps. The one thing I don't like about the marlin is you having to keep it really clean! It'll foul on you and jam much more than the ruger. Also the feed throat has problems, which I had and it was the older style. What a pain in the ass to find that part! Had to buy the whole trigger assembly on ebay to fix the problem. Couldn't find the old part at the time.

I have over the years owned more Marlins than any other rifles. I do like them and respect their quality and service - off the shelf. My only issue is with the microgroove rifled barrel is that it easily fouls by leading. You need to use plated copper at a minimum. I currently use a 16.5" stainless crome lined barrel on my 10/22 - it is flawless. On the other hand one must consider the Savage 22 semiautomatic - It is also a worthy competitor in this market.

the accuracy issue is directly related to the marlin barrel is micro-grooved, and the ruger is not. choice and preference of the shooter is paramount. I own both the ruger, and marlin 60. I like the marlin better...customization hands down goes to the ruger...so it's apples and oranges time. however, having said all of that, either would go with me on a fun-time-.22-brick-shooting-day, and I would not have a bad day at all. good video. keep up the good work. and as always: semper fi, carry on!!

I have a Marlin/Glenfield that is so old that it has squirrels on the stock where you would expect to find checkering. While I have put a Boyd's stock on it, I am keeping the original stock for collectors value. It is not possible to drill a cleaning rod access hold in the rear of the receiver of the Marlin, as it is on the Ruger. If you like heavy barrels, then put a .920" barrel on your Ruger, along with a high comp Boyd's stock. I live in CA, where detachable magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are not allowed, but having a pocket full of 10 round magazines makes it faster to get off more shots than having to reload a tube. Marlin has been absorbed by Remington, who is currently in Chapter 11. Ruger is currently the NUMBER ONE gun maker, regardless of history. While I like 10/22s, my favorite .22s are lever action Henrys.

I have not yet owned a Ruger 10 / 22 but I certainly plan to buy one in time. I have other 22's including a Marlin model 99 that I bought in 1968 and it has no serial number on it. This rifle is so accurate that I can shoot the tacks off of a target at 50 yards. I also have a Remington Nylon 66 and a Remington single shot .22 and both are quite accurate. Personally I have found the Marlin, with its Micro Groove barrel to be the most accurate of the bunch.
@jonathanpudish5906
@jonathanpudish5906 10 жыл бұрын
People were talking about accuracy. The Marlin should be more accurate because of the barrel rifling. Back in the 50's they developed a unique rifling in there barrels. instead of say 4-6 grooves. They have I believe it is 16 groves that are shallower there is more grip on the bullet. less cut on the lead and this helps with the spin on the bullet. The marlin will always be more accurate because of this. Ammo being a factor however.

I chose the Marlin over the Ruger for my son's birthday. It was a tough decision. What I liked about the Marlin was the micro groove rifling. As a gun trader I think you would know this and not that it's a "heavier barrel". So here are the specs: The twist rate is 1:16 inches, right-hand. Micro-Groove rifling uses 16 small lands and grooves rather than 4, 6 or 8 deeper grooves used in most rifles. Just look it up on Wikipedia. I would however in the future like get the 10/22 because of the various magazines. So one may be more accurate, the other a bit cooler to customize. It depends on your personality.

Mine can shoot the tacks of of a target at 50 yards on a routine basis.

Got the .22 bug in the 1970's. My own meager collection consists of; Ruger 10/22, Norinco ATD.22, Rossi 62SAC (pump carbine) and .22/.410 matched pair, Marlin models 20 and Papoose, Ithaca 49, Charter Arms AR-7 and a Taurus 72 (.22 magnum) carbine. I have shot the model 60 and it is a fine rifle. For a "basic" .22 the Marlin wins. The 10/22 has a whole "cottage" industry of accessories that can't be beat for "tricking out" your 10/22. The micro-groove barreled Marlin is a tack driver. I also have a Ruger KNR-5, I love .22's! One additional thought, the monte carlo stock on the Marlin makes scope use much easier.
@86djtaylor
@86djtaylor 8 жыл бұрын
This argument has been going on for years. To me, the Marlin wins in the accuracy. Mainly because of Marlin's Micro-Groove rifling. And with good reason. Every Marlin I have ever had, including big bore .44 levergun, have been more accurate then the competition. You get a much better obturation (gripping/seal of the bore to initiate the bullet's spin) in Micro-Groove rifling because of their being nearly quadruple the rifling grooves instead of 3 to 5 standard button/hammer forged rifling grooves. Pound for pound, the Marlin 60 is by far my favorite although I have a soft spot for the 10/22. Both serve a purpose. I've put thousands of headshots on squirrels when hunting them over the years with a model 60. Really the easiest way to put it, is the 10/22 is more of an adult lego because of the huge array of barrels,stocks, actions/triggers and the model 60 is a no nonsense utility piece/workhorse. In short, the Marlin is a much more accurate rifle out of the box than the 10/22, but the 10/22 is what you want if you plan on doing a lot of customizing.

If you replace the 10/22 barrel, stock, and trigger, it may equal the accuracy of the Model 60, or 795.
@86djtaylor
@86djtaylor 8 жыл бұрын
Zen999the Yeah you can best the model 60's accuracy by a barrel/action swap. you can put as much as 5 to 600 dollars in just barrel. Out of the box, the model 60/795 is going to shoot a lot better. The quality of the barrel is your main determining factor for accuracy with any gun. Bore straightness, smoothness, how concentric it is to the action, type of rifling, how the rifling was made(hammer forged or cut), depth of the lands of the rifling, how many grooves you have, twist rate, and of course the crown. From the factory as I said, all things bare bones/stock, a marlin will print tighter groups than a 10/22.

1OFGODSOWN I'm always telling people this. It's really a personal preference. I love both. Both will do anything you need them to. I have more memories with a model 60. Shot a TON of squirrels growing up with a plain jane open sight model 60. Still have it to this day. The 10/22 has really came around in the last decade. Now you can get reliable high cap magazines for them from Ruger, which in the past was a gamble when you bought them third party. Very rarely were they reliable enough to be useful. I'm not going to mention any names. The accessory market for the Ruger is insane. It's basically a lego for gun guy's. I've built a lot of them for guy's to shoot competition/matches with. I've seen some groups that you would have to have been there to believe they were printed with a semi-auto 22. They have both stood the test of time and they will definitely be around for another 50+ years. Combined, there have been over 16 million of them produced, and for good reason.

I have both and the Marlin shoots like a laser while the 10/22 almost looks like a shotgun pattern. Both have been 100% reliable with all ammo I've tested. Both are synthetic versions and the Marlin came with sling mounts moulded in. 10/22 holds 10 rounds unless you buy the aftermarket 25 rounder (not practical for hunting in thick areas), and the Marlin holds 16. Bought the Marlin on sale for $129 and bought the Ruger for $250. If you want a 22 that you can customize and pour money into and eventually have a nice reliable shooter then the 10/22 is for you. If you want an accurate reliable 22 out of the box for hunting and plinking and don't care about buying a bunch of accessories the Marlin wins.

The Marlin 60 tube holds 14 or 18 rounds depending on which year it was made. The Marlin also has 1/16 rifling in the barrel which helps it deliver both better accuracy and a bit more punch from the higher velocity ammo. Both rifles are well known for not being picky about ammo. I prefer CCI and Aquilla ammo. But they will both deliver enjoyable plinking from a Federal Bulk Pack as well. I do prefer the Marlin 60. It just feels more perfectly balanced in your hand.

MidwayUSA carries them in both stainless and blue, if you're handy with tools it's maybe a 15 min fix. Remove the action from the stock, remover the tube follower, drift the tube retention pin out, remove bent tube, install new tube, perform steps in reverse. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself you can take it to a gunsmith and have it done too.

The Marlins feed better, especially with the inexpensive bulk ammo. My old 10/22, sold many years ago, fed great regardless of ammo manufacturer. The Butler Creek 25 round mag with steel feed lips works ok, the one with plastic feed lips pretty unreliable. Thanks everyone.

I own both Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 795, both are in stock configuration. I love both rifles and have never had a problem with either. They both shoot most any ammo well.

I have both the Marlin 60 and the Ruger 10/22. I bought the Marlin in 2011, and the Ruger a couple months ago. The newer Marlins leave something to be desired in terms of quality. I had to send it back less than a year after I bought it because something internally broke and the trigger wouldn't reset. Their customer service is unpleasant even when something is clearly their fault. They took a while to fix it, but it has been okay since then. On my 10/22, one of my BX-25 magazines was hanging up so I called Ruger, and they sent me a new mag right away. The folks at Ruger are much better people. The Marlin is more accurate out of the box, but the 10/22 isn't inaccurate by any means.

In addtion to major differences of the micro-groove barrel in the Marlin, and the tube fed vs. magazine fed (flush rotary mag is nice featrue), one should consider the take down and specifically the recoil spring. Had older Glenfield model 60 and would have difficulty in reassembling after take down because recoil spring didn't have full guide rod. Not the case with Ruger, the full guide rod makes it much easier to re-assemble (at least don't have to worry about bending the recoil spring).

In my experience detachable magazine .22s are more dependable then tube fed ones. The tube feed mechanism is more complicated and when it jams usually is a jam that is worse then a mag rifle and often requires you to take the gun apart. If you improve the trigger on the 10/22 it's accuracy will be much better

I owned both. For my money I would keep the 10/22. There is no other rifle that you can more with than the 10/22, and it is ultra reliable. 30 round clips no problem.

I love seeing people argue. IMO it all comes down to personal preference. I own a 10/22 and its never jammed once ( firing around a thousand rounds in the snow without a single jam). But if you want to talk about accuracy out of the box, it's going to be the marlin. But all I would have to do is buy a competition barrel and it would show up that marlin any day at accuracy.

My dad has an old school Marlin 60 from 1972 and it still works like brand new. My brother just bought a 10/22 and it doesn't even compare in my eyes. It feels so much cheaper than the Marlin. I can load the Marlin much quicker also.

Hi. I've watched a number of videos on the Model 60, and since your vid showed alot, and that you're a .22 enthusiast, I've decided to ask you this question. I recently bought an early model 60, and before that, a Winchester 190. I paid the same for both, and both work properly- they fire and reload without a hitch. The 60 came with a basic Tasco 4x15 scope. I haven't shot any rifle in years, so I'd like opinions on them both. Any experience with the Winchester? (vs the 60)

I also own both rifles. I agree that the Marlin is slightly more accurate, however I like the action on the Ruger better. If you have a misfeed or a jam on the Ruger it's a piece of cake to clear. On the Marlin, it can be a bit cumbersome. There are more after market accessories available for the Ruger... Other than that, I like them both!

I heard someone say that if you use a .22 for home defence, a ruger is better as it is easier to reload quickly. Just pop in a full mag. It takes much longer to reload the Marlin. I do have a Model 60 and I love it.

I have a great dislike for any fire arm which is clip fed, they can fall out on you at the most expected times, they hang up on things and always in the way. Now we have clips that hold an unbelievable amount of ammo. What a waste no wonder you cannot find 22 ammo on the store shelf. Have always been partial to tube magazines my first choice when it come to anything 22LR.

Same here. I bought a Mod 60 stainless just about 20 years ago and it is a great gun, not any where modifiable when compared with a Ruger. I mod a Ruger as well with a bull barrel but of 16in length. Made a really neat deep brush .22. Adding a Volqartsen fire group and wow.

No surprises there about the accuracy. The secret is that Micro-Groove rifling in the Marlin. I have a Marlin 39A, and it's definitely my favorite gun of all. Reliable, INCREDIBLY accurate (1/2"-3/4" groups of five @ 50 yards), and simply beautiful.

The Marlin is noticeably more accurate than the Ruger at 50 yards. I think the heaviness of the barrel definitely contributes to this but I think the micro-groove rifling has a more significant impact on the accuracy difference. I also think the action of the Marlin feels smoother to me than the Ruger

On an additional note, I actually don't care for Ruger auto-rifles that much because of their "bounce" when fired. Whether it's a 10/22 or Mini 14, they both have it. It's this boing-boing feeling like there are springs on both sides of the bolt and it bounces back and forth a moment before settling for the next shot. Of course, I am picky as well.

Doesn't anybody know the trick to speed loading the Marlin ? If you can find some rigid plastic tubing of the right inner diameter, you cut to a proper length, plug one end, then pre-load your 18 rounds of .22LR into the plastic tubes. When you are ready to re-load you pull the mag tube all the way out, place one of the pre-loaded plastic tubes and tilt the barrel up and the rounds will slide right in. Then re-insert the spring mag tube and away we go. Very fast and easy.

I think the two rifles are produced for separate reasons. The Ruger is essentially a plinking rifle. I have put hundreds of dollars into 10/22s to make them more accurate. Aftermarket gadgets are everywhere for them. Triggers, stocks, barrels and everything else makes them look cool. In the end you end up with a cool looking plinking 22. And, that is okay.The Marlin is essentially a more classic styled hunting 22. Most are inherently more accurate than the Ruger from the factory. Marlin has the reputation of being a 22 rifle maker. As far as Marlin quality being less in recent years, I call BS. The problem was at Marlin and not Remington. The machinery to make the traditional Marlin products was worn out and Marlin could not get financing to purchase new. Marlin was hand fitting parts to make them work. When Remington moved the plant, they acquired new machinery as soon as they recognized the problem. I have looked at and shot Marlin products from recent manufacture and they are of excellent quality. This argument is kind of like the pre-64 Winchester argument. Now that Winchester is manufacturing the model 70 in Portugal is suppose there will be a pre-post Portugal argument.I own both and like both but there are distinctly different rifles intended to please different past times.

The Marlin is in fact more accurate than the Ruger10-22 because the Marlin has microgroove rifling and the Ruger10-22 does not. The barrel thickness does not matter.

I love my 10/22 but I'm going to buy a stainless Marlin 60 soon. I hunt small game with my ruger. Mostly squirrels. It is pretty accurate for that. Plus I use a dot sight. Which can be more challenging out to 50 yards vs a scope. I'm anxious to try the Marlin. I will use a scope on it though.
