I am in the weird camp of wanting a shorter barrel. I walk thru the woods and don’t shoot super far, but prefer lighter bullets anyway. So i enjoy compact packages. My 24” 308 rifle with a 7” suppressor is just a pain to hike with.

Not wierd you just would probley be better suited with a pump, auto loader or lever action gun.

Light bullets are better in longer barrels. Heavy bullets reach full velocity in shorter barrels.

Shorter barrels are more accurate than longer barrels anyways, you just lose velocity.

I watched this vid when it was new and was impressed enough to buy a Ruger American Gen 2 in 7mm-08. I was not disappointed. The rifle likes the Remington Core Lokts as well and got me a 3/4 inch three shot group at 100 yards. (I don't have calipers so I just rely on a tape measure and the Mark l eyeball.) But the star of my groups was the Federal Fusion 140 gr. with a 5/8 inch group! Love the rifle and the accuracy!

A lot of people were having issues with the flush mount mags. I think this may have been a factor in them changing design. But you can buy 5 and 10 round AICS mags. The 5 round doesn't hang down much further than the 3 round. That's what I use in my Ruger M77 Gunsite Scout .308.
@joelodjick230

I don't know about this one but my biggest gripe with the AI mag version of the Gen I was that the front action screw was under the mag catch. So you had to take all that apart to remove the barreled action from the stock :( No bad luck with the flush fit mags yet but I'm sure they're out there
@phild9813
@phild9813 7 ай бұрын
Hmm. I’ve also never had an issue with the flush fit. I think the AICS mags are ugly, and the fact that they don’t hold more rounds with the factory mag seems like a waste.

I have a ruger American Gen 2 and mine for whatever reason the magpul aics mags took an insane amount of force to lock in. So I just threw it in the magpul American hunter stock and problem solved.

Thanks for the review. I prefer the flush magazine too. I wonder if you have tried using a sandbag with your shooting rest. It'll make the rest absorb the recoil without all the movement. Impressed by the accuracy of these popular price point rifles. Keep up the good work.

I had some issues in one of my Ruger American rifles with weak springs in the flush fit magazine, so I'm happy to see that they went with the AICS style mags even if they don't sit flush. I also like that it now has a three position safety that locks the bolt. There have been times when I've spotted a deer only to find the the gun would not fire as the bolt had been bumped up just a tad. I just ordered one of these Gen 2 models in .308 and can't wait for it's arrival.

Well I bought one of the first Remington700 BDL sporter barreled 7mm-08 back in 1982. Back then the 140 gr bullet was actually a 139 gr Hornaday SP. The rifle shot that load well, I mounted a Weaver Steel tube Fixed 3x scope on it, in Redfield Mounts.I shot a lot of deer with it. The cartridge is a good one, but since I handload my own ammo, I like the 7 x 57 better. My load of choice is a 140 gr Nosler Partition and 50 gr of IMR-4350, or 46 gr of IMR-4350 and a 175 gr Nosler Partition. I have a Steyr Mannlicher Model M Professional, first generation that I bought in 1975. Killed a lot of game with it. Right now it wears a 6 x 42 mm Leupold. I am not much for big glass or knobs. Some guys have a knob fedish, you may know some in your circle.

The use of the AICS pattern magazines gives you the option to run 5 or 10 round capacity mags as well as the factory 3 rounder. The Ruger flush mags leave you stuck at 4 no matter what. I’m also a competitive long range shooter so most of my rifles are configured to run AICS mags which makes the Gen 2 Ruger a very familiar configuration for me. Gonna have to get my hands on one in 7mm PRC! Appreciate your review!

If I can make a suggestion on your sighting in procedure? After you take the first shot and see where it lands on paper move the reticle to the impact hole. Then your next shot (s) will be right where you aim your rifle. The 7-08 is a great cartridge as it’s nothing more than a modern day 7x57 Mauser in performance and it can be had in a short action. I have found that they like from 140-142 grain bullets. My wife harvested her first deer in Texas with her 7-08 one shot 140 grain Sierra one shot dropped in its tracks at 123 yards! I do believe federal loads the 142 as it is made by Nosler for Federal and from time to time they sell overruns of that bullet out of their Shooters Pro Shop. Great video!

There are a lot of accurate factory rifles in this price point with non-fluted barrels and flush mags if you’re not stuck on Ruger American. CVA Cascade comes to mind…threaded and flush mag. Winchester XPR, Browning AB3…you’re on the heels of a Tikka T3x for price…so keep that in mind.

I could not remove the stock without removing the mag release lever., which is a pain. At least this rifle came with the tool. My go wild did not. A ball end hex key could not move the bolt at the factory torque setting. I got the trigger down to about 2.7 ounces. It would not go lower than this, even with no spring on a test. Replaced the spring to get that level. Not a Savage trigger. The stock adjustment and risers are extra cost options if you want to change them. Nice rifle at a 95% quality level.

Another very informative video. Thank you! I too would rather have the flush magazine. Some people carry the gun from there because that is where the gun balances but you can't do very well with the extended magazine, and isn't the reason to have the extended magazine to carry more rounds? I too would want at least a 22" barrel that is threaded with a muzzle brake on the rifle. The original stock was definitely cheap. That Is one of the main reasons I never purchased one. This new stock at least on the videos looks chunky and not a very good fit to finish with it. The gun seems to shoot well but almost all the guns do these days. I would pass on this gun to buy others sad to say. I always loved the M77 by Ruger and you still can't beat the good old 10/22. Ruger needs to go back to the drawing board for a few tweaks if they want to sell more of the Ruger Americans in my opinion. Maine North Woods Hunter (Shane)

Maybe theyll do a long range/vatminter line of these eventually in the common short action and Magnum calibers. With longer barrels that are measured up to where the rifling ends. You know boltface to true muzzle. And offer a more vertical grip area on those specific stocks. Maybe even use the Magpul AI pattern magazines? I'm thinking a rifle more economical than the Ruger Precision with a traditional target look.

I'm not sold on it yet but I'm always that way even with vehicles. When a new model comes out, it takes time for them to grow on me. Personally I've not had problems from my flush mag in the old model, zipper bolt dosen't bother me either. Hopefully they come out with a version aimed more towards hunters. I do like the new comb, the old stock dose need more height, looking for a mod possibly. To sum it up based on what I've seen so far, I like my green predator flush mag better. Thanks for the honest review!

I know what you mean on the stock height. Whenever possible, I like the early Gen 1 rails that were not picatinny spacing with the Ruger logo in the middle. Sits a lot lower on the rifle.

I want to see a 18" barrel. Not sure why the desire for 24" barrels for east coast hunting. Not like the vast majority of our shots require that extra velocity, esp when you consider the tradeoff with carrying a long gun through the thick woods. I reached this conclusion when comparing how easy it was to pack around my Winchester model 94 in comparison to my Savage 110 ultralite with a suppressor. The winchester was far and away more comfortable and a lot of it had to do with the length. Now I'm really wanting to build a 18" 6.5cm with my suppressor. Perfect for a thick timber gun.

Kinda like saying you want a sports car with less horsepower.....may not get to use it much but still nice to have more power

If you use a can you get some of that horsepower back so short barrels with a can are very pleasing and you can hunt without hearing damage.@@WHOTEEWHO

@@WHOTEEWHOkind of but not really. That’s like saying you can have the horsepower but the sports car is going to be as long as a limousine. Kind of defeats the purpose. If what you’re saying was the case why don’t we all advocate for 30” barrels? Personally I’d rather have a slightly shorter barrel 18-20”…easier to maneuver in the woods and not much velocity lost. I can make full use of that rifle it doesn’t limit me at all. It’s like ripping around in a Mazda Miata…might not be the fastest car in the world but you can push it to its limits…couldn’t do that with a hypercar.

Awesome work. I’m looking to buy a new 6.5Creedmoor. So far I’m thinking Bergara B14 Wilderness, Tikka Ctr, or possibly a Ruger Am. Gen2 but put it in a Krg Bravo stock right off the bat. And it's January so there shoild be more Shot show releases as well!

You'd probably be okay with any of those picks, then just have to find the ammo they like

I am happy with the Tikka T3 and T3X. Bolt is butter smooth out of the box. Like a poor man's Sako.😊

If you’re going to invest in chasis and potentially further mods/accessories I think you would far better served spending the extra money on a Bergara or Tikka. I’ve owned both. I prefer the Bergara to build off of but would probably prefer a Tikka for a lightweight out to the box hunting rifle. No need to go Wilderness on the Bergara if you’re going to place in a Bravo (which coincidentally is what mine sets in) save a little money get the regular Ridge and then get the Bravo. Ultimately the Tikkas and Bergara are much better rifles to build off of. They both have smooth, reliable actions without any hiccups or quirks like RAs or the other budget rifles that in my opinion keep them from prime time. Triggers are also better in both options out the box by a pretty wide margin though I have to give the edge to the Tikka. Between my Bergara and Tikka I must say both actions feel equally smooth to me once broken in. They glide, smooth as glass. However the Tikka has a noticeable amount of what I can only describe as slop or side to side movement when in its rear most position. The Bergara has this also but to a lesser degree. Not a huge deal at all but it’s something I notice from time to time. Tikka does have a shorter bolt throw however. Can’t go wrong with either.

It’s the same as a Gen 1 so any stock/barrel/etc that fit a Gen 1 will fit a Gen 2…it’s just like when a car company refreshes the looks and adds a few more bells and whistles
