Testing some loads out of the Ruger American Ranch out to 500 yards. I decided to go ahead and post some footage of some (fluffy bunny) I did while out testing some new loads. I normally dont post videos of me (not ok for ads word), although it is one of my favorite pastimes. I especially enjoy steel at longer ranges, and strangely I video most of my (cant say that word) for my own use, mainly to catch myself flinching or to review shot placement of steel ... or just for fun so I thought what the heck why not see if there is any interest in this.
I am (pulling a lever and making a bang) two very different rifles on this day, at pretty much the opposite ends of price range and practical use but both from the same manufacturer. Both are great rifles and bring a huge amount of value for the price in my mind. It was interesting switching between the two comparing the two.
The rifle in this video retails for about 400 dollars, and for that price I feel it is a very good all around rifle that can really do just about anything a small caliber bolt action carbine should. Even with its shorter 16inch barrel it is still a decent long range plinker, and while its accuracy is nothing to get overly excited about I have found it to be more than acceptable for plinking steel, varmints at moderate ranges or small game hunting. This little rifle is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite rifles, maybe not so much for any one single great thing it does exceptionally well but more because of the overall package it brings to the table ... and the fact that I can shoot it all day and not go broke !!

In the future if you want to see any marksmanship videos from me they will only be posted on Bit chute or other sites, its not a matter of making money but the double standards and not adhering to their own standards that they have published for us to follow. There is technically nothing wrong with this other than they don't LIKE it. Rant Over.

Such a short, light, handy rifle handicapped by many with a big honking 3x9 or 3x12 scope with traditional duplex reticle.. You should seriously look into getting the Primary Arms ACSS 1 - 6 x 24mm with its now famous 0 - 600 yard BDC ranging reticle. I won't write an essay about the features.. Get on KZfaq and watch a few of the hundreds of reviews raving about how easy it is to make hits with that scope from 10 yards all the way out to 600 without touching the turret adjustments.. Its illuminated, its rugged as hell, and it comes in under $300. As a knockaround rifle you might also want to consider one of their budget ACOG Prism scopes with the same reticle in a fixed Prism scope that comes in under 6" long.. They make a fixed 3X and a fixed 5X with the same BDC ranging reticle.. Watch BRENT videos on these scopes.. He goes in depth on the ranging features as well as the BDC reticle.
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up. I have seen the PA ACSS scopes, but I dont think they would work for my use ( I am not shooting/ranging 2 legged targets) and I believe illuminated scopes are not allowed for hunting in my state( this may have changed). I would consider one for an AR or such but for my bolt guns, I prefer a typical small footprint reticle with good magnification for smaller targets. While shooting this video (steel targets) I used the BDC reticle without making adjustments, however I normally use a range finder and dial dope for smaller targets to insure a more precise shot and clean hit. Just depends on what your intended use is I suppose.

@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I didnt know they had put the magazine fed one in production yet... I dont have any issue with the rotary mag ( other than the cost of spares). For what I use the rifle for I actually prefer the flush mag. I hope they do a better job with the mag lock-up than some other bolt guns have done, leaving the magazine floppy and hard to chamber rounds with a full mag some times. I can see how some people will really like the feature especially if you have lots of mags already. I wonder if they will keep selling both.
@CClifton5678
@CClifton5678 5 жыл бұрын
I had the Ruger mag version, it had no problem feeding, I sold it to a friend to turn around and buy the AR mag version. I have a Vortex Viper 3-9x40 on mine, it shoots great. I had about a 100 round break in period before it consistently shot 3/4 moa with the 50gr v-max and 55gr Hornady match ammo I hunt coyotes with. Best gun for the money hands down. I have several 5.56 and .223 rifles, the Ruger gets shot more than any of the others. My next one will be the predator in 6.5grendel.

How you like the rifle overall ? Looking at one of these or Remington 700 sps aware of the stock flaws but but looking for pinpoint accuracy.
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 5 жыл бұрын
Good question, I think it depends on your definition of accuracy and the intended use. I could write a book on this rifle ! If you are looking for pinpoint accuracy I will tell you my experience with mine... Not pinpoint. I am able to get a consistent 1" group at 100 yards and that is with handloads made for this rifle and I filled the front stock with fiberglass. I have more accurate rifles in the same price range. Having said that I really like this rifle for lots of other reasons and it is a keeper for me. It is 5.56 and eats anything I put in it. I call it my scout rifle. Not in the normal tactical way most people think, but when I go looking for new areas to hunt, camp, ride bike etc this rifle goes with. Its short barrel limits velocity but is very nice to pack. I have racks on my motorcycle and my mountain bike for carrying this rifle. On the motorcycle the rifle is just shorter than the handlebars so it is not sticking out beyond, fits perfect. To be honest it is probably the rifle that sees the most trigger and travel time that I own. I also like the fact that the twist rate is better suited for heavier bullets, alot of the more accurate 223 rifles are set up for lighter bullets. So for me it is a pack around rifle/truck gun sort of that can take a beating and I dont mind getting it dirty. BUT when I want pure precision, sub MOA I take something else. Hope this helps !

@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 9 ай бұрын
I was seeing right around 1" groups right out of the box with reloads. It likes heavier bullets. Factory ammo was kind of all over the place, cheap bulk 223/556 55grain FMJ was anywhere around 3-5" groupings, good enough for plinking steel on the cheap. I did end up glassing the fore end of the stock to stiffen it up and opened up the barrel channel. Saw a minimal increase in accuracy less flyers, still right around 1" bit under on a good day. The down side is the weight increased almost a pound, and the stock still flexed further back by the mag well anyway. I carry this all over while hiking in the winter and kind of wish I had not added the glass but it still hammers coyotes easy enough at 2-300 yards.

Can that ruger American ranch 5.56 nato shoot 223 Remington?
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 3 жыл бұрын
The safe answer is: Only fire the ammunition the firearm is specifically chambered in or stated by the manufacturer. Having said that, it is generally accepted That firing .223 Remington is safe to fire from a 5.56 nato chambered rifle. It is not generally recommended to fire 5.56 in a 223 Remington chambered rifle (there are exceptions). This is one of the reasons I purchased this rifle, the ability to have a bolt action rifle with a chamber that could fire any load 5.56/223 safely and could handle a variety of weighted bullets including the heavier 60-70 grain stuff more often loaded in 5.56. There is lots of information available for further research.

I believe it was from Stag Arms I don't recall exactly, I have since traded it out for a "VG6 gamma". The 3 chamber was great for recoil/watching impact but was ear shattering, esp when hunting.

How did you get the action to cycle so smooth, I have to fight my loaded rounds to get them to chamber.

Mine is stock, no issues with it chambering. If you have to fight to chamber rounds or close the bolt you could have major issues. I would call Ruger and talk to them about it. I have had very good luck with them standing behind their products.

hunting is usually under 300 yards so what is with long range?

Purely for the challenge. Reloading, calculating drop, adjusting for wind, temperature, pressure and mirage. There is a lot with long range. As far as hunting being under 300 yards I guess it depends on what you are hunting, where you hunt and what you are using. 300 yards is not long range for western hunting with a legal large game caliber, especially in the flatlands. Personally I do not normally hunt big game with rifle I use a bow, and 30 yards is the sweet spot.

Boomer alert.... Probably doesn't believe in "high capacity" mags and ARs either

Any scope recommendations for this rifle in almost 2023? I'm about to pull the pin on one of these up here in Canada, as our anti-freedom, woke Trudeau government is trying to ban almost every semi-auto firearm in the country.

In the video I was using a Bushnell Trophy, it was nice but too short of eye relief. I swapped to a Vortex Crossfire II, 2-7X32 with BDC reticle. It is a clean little budget scope (around 120$ nowdays) with great eye relief, simple usable reticle and fairly lightweight (16 oz I think). I liked it enough I put one on my other Ruger American in 7mm-08. Something a little more tacticool and bit smaller would be a 1-6 or 1-8 LPVO by Sig, Vortex, Burris or PA etc. If you want something a little more rugged I have heard good things about the Primary Arms Prism scopes in 1, 2.3, 3 or 5x.
