I’m spoiled when it comes to Ruger. I live a few miles from the Newport, NH factory and see many unique Rugers. Many from the hands of employees. Just this past weekend I saw a M77 with case hardened receiver and floor plate 1 of 500 made, then a prototype speed six in 9mm from the mid 70’s showed up with all the provenance and box. That was 1 of 12 made. The neat thing about that was it was made to not require moon clips.

I Have owned Ruger M77 chambered in .270 Win for almost 30 years it has killed many mule deer and Elk here out west. I looked up the serial number on ruger's website and mine was made in 1975. I can honestly say this rifle will never leave my possession and will someday be passed down to my son. 👊😎🇺🇸

I had a Ruger Hawkeye in 280 Remington that had a synthetic stock. I tried many loads in 140 and 150 grain bullets I could find in Nosler and Horandy loading manuals to no avail. So, I sold it. First Ruger I’ve ever had a problem with.

I have the Hawkeye Long-Range Target in 300 WM with a Steiner scope. Don't hear too much about it. Seems to be an excellent rifle for competition shooting particularly with the 26 " barrel. Anyway, I am very happy with it even if gun people are not talking it up more. Also, I did not realize that the Hawkeye was considered a little more upscale than the American. Interesting discussion. Thanks!

Thank you, sir, for another great video, particularly on the M77, one of my favorite. I am also fond of the Mauser 98, and prefer wood and steel over the modern materials. I have always been interested in the 77 Hawkeye with it's control round feed, and I have a lot of respect for Ruger. I went with the Winchester (FN) M70 controlled round feed, it is glass bedded, though I did not get the chance to try them side by side, and both are pretty good from what I gather. The screw that goes in at an angle I think is brilliant. It secures the action in the stock in the direction with the grain of the wood to keep from splitting the stock during recoil and it's a bit more solid a connection to the stock, thus a more solid connection to the shooter.

If I have a steel and wood rifle I want the steel milled from a forging. I want the checkering hand cut etc. my favorite rifles have been M70 pre ‘64. 270, 300 H&H being the best all round hunting rifle I have had. I have nothing against the skeleton tactical stocks or synthetic stocks in their place. But to own and a appreciate it has to be steel and wood 😃

I have M-77 Mk. 1's, (And I don't like the push feed and tang safety, that's for shotguns), but I also have Mk-2's, with a PROPER safety for a rifle, AND the Controlled Feed, as in my opinion, it's a SUPERIOR system for a rifle. Also own a M-77, African Safari Grade, in .416 Rigby. (It's a Mk-2 system). Also, I don't like plastic toy stocks.!! if you were in the military in the last 60 years you would have to bond with your 'toy' to keep you alive. I agree that the wood is much more attractive, but it also has its issues in jungle warefare or hunting. the accuracy of the toy regier american is sub MOI out of the box.

I think you should take the three popular controlled round feed rifles and do a comparison. Ruger 77, Winchester model 70, Kimber, or CZ 550. I find it interesting that people favor the Remington 700 so much. The 700 is a plain push feed rifle that is mass produced which isn't always a good thing. Also you rarely talk about the safety's function and design. I like that you mention how the actions are made. I've learned lots from your videos please make more.

I’ve been researching quite a bit about the American ranch 450 bushmaster and pretty soon stumbled upon the Ruger scout (which also comes in that caliber). The whole scout concept appeals to me, but am not convinced about the long eye relief scopes. (Even though some say it’s not part of Mr Cooper’s original definition it seem to have somewhat evolved to include it.) They sure look nice and for a stalking rifle in the brush it somewhat makes sense with low magnification and the option of shooting with both eyes open. But one wonders if that couldn’t be obtained with a normal scope mount too... The Ruger scout can mount a regular scope, but to me that would feel like a compromise. In any case, thanks for your videos, after watching a lot of different ones I must say that yours are in class by themselves.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrik. Good observations on the long eye relief scopes. I've tried and compared several different low magnification conventional scopes with long eye relief on the same rifles. The long eye relief is very fast on target - but I prefer the conventional scopes. At low magnification or even a fixed 2x or 4x the field of view is generous and snap shooting is possible. I do understand the appeal of the long eye relief scopes though.

I bet you have some Dakota Arms rifles. When they first started and based their proprietary calibers on the .404 Jeffrey I was very impressed with their thinking on a beltless magnum head spacing on the shoulder. The ballistics are impressive as well.

Hi Kenneth - I knew Don Allen quite well - the founder of Dakota. His Dakota 10 falling block is based on the Hagn and he made one for me in .45 ACP - a lot of fun to own and shoot. I liked his line of cartridges but when he asked I said I felt it might be an uphill battle to get broad and lasting market acceptance - no matter how good the cartridge line is - the big companies are hard to beat and there are so many proprietary cartridges. Weatherby did well though and then there are all the Lazzeroni type offerings. Still, Dakota cartridges are superb.

Only come across 1 here in Oz currently for sale in 270w ( new out of stock)… testament I guess to build or owner popularity. Investment casting was used, by the chinese i am certain, thousands of years ago, and its a brilliant system. Like every good idea, its simple and effective. USOG, this is an excellent review of these two rifles. I obviously like the M77 better, but I think it worth pointing out that it is actually amazing what gun companies have done with modern rifles. In particular, they have seemingly managed to cheapen up the manufacturing of these rifles, but they all seem to be at least as accurate, if not more accurate than their more expensive counterparts. From what I read online, people claim that the Ruger American is actualy more accurate than the M77.

The use of the word “forged” is perplexing to me. My understanding is that receivers made from “round bar stock” are NOT “forged” but instead are simply “machined” from a piece of “rolled” round bar stock. This means that the use of the word “forged” is actually inaccurate and misleading when describing receivers such as the ones you find in Remington and Savage rifles. Do you find the use of the word “forged” to be improper and misleading?

John if your making a Sten Gun use use round bar stock. I have an old Stevens chambered in 30=06 and doubt if dynamite could destroy it. Ive never heard a complaint on the Savage action regards to strength the Savage action is made from SEAMLESS TUBING not rolled stock this accounts for the forging.

I’ve had 3 Americans, .22, .17hmr and .223 all excellent shooters. The barrel on .223 was touching the fore end from new so I shaved it slightly prior to firing. Therefore I can’t guarantee it would’ve affected accuracy.

I give all the Americans high marks - among the budget rifles - they are a cut above.

Do you know a source for torque values for different rifles? I have been guessing on torque values by using industry standards for different size bolts/screws. I have found torque values for scope mounting but not for the rifle to stock mounting.

Hi Kenneth - such an interesting question; I've always gone by "hand tight" - seems to be reliable for me over the decades. Sorry I don't know more.

I agree with "hand tight" back in the day gunsmiths didn't really use torque specs everything was just hand tight. I've been hunting with the M77 270 for over 25 years and it has never come loose on me doing it this way. Now the Ruger American that might be a different story. 👊😎🇺🇸

Can you feed the M77 via stripper clip?
@87MENGER
@87MENGER 5 жыл бұрын
No you can't because of the bolt but even with the bolt out of the way you still have the top of the receiver where it mounts the scope is in the way.

@@87MENGER even without scope the top of the rear of the receiver would have a cutout if it was meant too be fed that way. But a cope would be a major hindrance as well

It seems to me that a lot of Americans are obsessed with CHEAP! Wouldn't you be better off saving a bit more and getting the model 77 hawkeye and having something you can be proud of?
