My 1968 Ruger Single-Six is going back to Ruger. But I think this will have a happy ending. Check out this second installment on the Ruger I found in a Pawn Shop. Aside from some "acne" and the fact that it was not a 22LR but a 22 Magnum it has a ton of promise. But the big question after the first video was . . . can it shoot? And the answer is . . . well, yes and no. One things for sure, it's an interesting tale with, I hope, a happy ending.

I agree with Jeff. Do not give negative people the satisfaction of letting them control you with their virtue signaling. Normal people take it for granted that you know how to check your firearm. Enjoy your videos George. Thanks

I bought a Ruger super single six in 1976 when I turned 21. It was roll stamped made in the 200th year of American liberty on top of the barrel. Love that revolver. Over the years I lost the .22 lr cylinder, sent in to them to have a new one fitted, and they overhauled it free. I had not noticed, over the years, but when I got it back I was amazed at how much the trigger pull was improved. And there was no charge, only the new cylinder. Can’t beat that costumer service.

I watched the entire video since I am a Ruger Single Six owner since 1982. It was originally a 9.5" barrel and shot very well with a young man's eyes. On varmint hunting trips with friends, it is the firearm of choice. In 1991 I had it customized by shortening the barrel to 7.5" so it would fit in my Ruger branded, Bianchi flap holster. The muzzel was crowned and very fine sights installed. It has taken countless ground squirrels, several coyotes, jackrabbits, skunks, porkies, rock Chuck's, magpies, and grouse. Your old style sights work well for plinking but fine sights allow me to extend the range significantly. I only use the magnum cylinder for night hunting while on coon or mountain lion hunts. Good luck with your "new model". Ruger customer service is world class !

@@TargetSuite Back before I knew about Ruger fixing the older ones, I traded into a 1957 single six that was unsafe. The sear was worn badly and would randomly drop the hammer. I'd love to go back in time and send it to Ruger. I'd still have it.

Grand video yet again George, thanks for the upload. As you are probably aware here in the U.K. we can no longer own this type of firearm, but I remember back in the day ( 60’s! ) learning to shoot a single action .22 revolver at 20yds at my local village rifle club, happy days!! Please don’t get upset over all this showing a 1000 times that the firearm is unloaded/safe people forget it’s your house and land and (as far as I know you’re not an instructor!) if you want to wave a loaded firearm around that’s your business. Anyone with an interest in shooting will know the score. Once again thanks for all your hard work and time bringing us such informative material. Kind regards Clive from deepest Dorset England 👍

Ruger has great customer service. In the late 80's I purchased a used .44 Carbine that was made in 1962. Under recoil, the rounds in the tube would sometimes fall out onto the ground. I sent it back to Ruger and they fixed it free of charge. I would definitely re-install the original components when you get it back. There's nothing quite like that sexy four click sound when you draw the hammer back.

I know its a matter of to each his own, I wouldn’t have a problem with the “New” transfer bar, system. I understand that they do send back all the parts removed. But while they have it you might ask them to fit a 22LR cylinder to change it up, while its there. Gives you the option 22wmr or 22LR done with factory backing then. Just a thought.
@TargetSuite
@TargetSuite 3 жыл бұрын
I asked them about the 22lr cylinder and they will no longer replace just the missing cylinder. They will only re-fit a new matched pair of cylinders . . . for $200. I'm not willing to go that route. But thanks for the suggestion!

Im a Ruger fan already starting out with the Service-Six i originally owned way back in the early 70s, i have a Security-Six on layaway right now, and its good to know that Ruger stands behind every one of their products that they put out. The turn around was quick.All parts that were replaced.were.returned with exception of 22 mag cylinder. I also.new some of the people and shot with them in quality control and range manager so could just give them the guns. The plant is about 50 miles from me in Newport, NH. In addition to the crown, you might also consider asking them to inspect the forcing cone and cyl to bore alignment while its there. Love my Ruger Single Six. Bought mine in like new condition from a pawn shop just outside of Camp Lejeune back in '93. Paid $125 out the door and still one of the best buys I've ever made. Morning George, sorry to see your little Ruger has to go back for some work. At least now you know why it was for sale in a pawn shop. Best of luck with the repairs. The downside to buying used Firearms has that there's generally a reason they're up for sale. That was my experience with two 1894s I bought on GB. One thing that's hard to talk about on a platform like this is safe handling when it requires violating the muzzles space. But we do it all the time when we're cleaning semi auto rifles and revolvers. It just never gets talked about.

Hey George, good to hear about Ruger going to take care of you. I've had a lot of Rugers and enjoyed them all. Ruger is a good company. Hope fixing the crown does the trick. As for the safety check thing I can see both sides of that. You can't see who is viewing your video or there skill set. Older shooters "should" know and do the four safety rules without thinking about it. We're as a new to the sport hasn't had the time to learn. Nice call on that Ruger and another awesome video. Look forward to seeing if the fix worked and how much did that affect the trigger pull.

A friend of mine even blew up a Super Blackhawk 44 Mag, hand loading too hot for sillouette. His fault, and he admitted it to them. They sent him a NEW gun, no charge. Not sure if they would to THAT today, but they are still the best.

I re-crowned a S&W .38 Spl. by myself one time using a very fine hard grinding stone. Mine is a stainless with 5 3/4 barrel. Mid seventies vintage. Never had an ounce of trouble with it. I know I wouldn’t want me shooting at me. One time on a mountain canyon on the far side I told my brother see that small white rock on far side. 22 Winchester Magnum I aimed and fired and reholstered before the stone flipped down the cliff. It’s a transfer bar type. Rock solid reliable for nearly 50 years now. Definitely need ear plugs that cylinder barrel gap and muzzle blast will cause permanent inner ear damage without. The shock wave will over load the eardrum mechanism as well.

If you watch the video in slomo for the CCI Maxi Mag at 15 yards, your third shot actually goes through the same hole as the second shot. I picked up a Single 9, 22 mag in stainless with factory fiber optic sights a little over two years ago. If I do my part from a rest, I have put all 9 shots within a nickel at 25 yards. Those sights make all the difference. Years ago I had a single six exactly like yours (3 screw) purchased new with the same sights that are on yours now. If my groups were inside a 3 inch circle, I considered my shooting lucky. Better sights, better groups. Especially with my "Old guy eyes" now, (over 70).

Great video George. You just have to love Ruger, their customer service is amazing! I am betting that your gun will shoot great when it comes back from the factory. FYI, I have a .22 WMR Ruger American that I take out to hunt varmints. I highly recommend it as a companion to the single six. My rifle consistently shoots .5 to .6 inch groups at 100 yards (as advertised!!) with CCI TNT ammo especially. Off hand, scoped, it for sure shoots minute of squirrel at 70 to 100 yards. Actually I would like to try a Henry .22 WMR one of these days, but I am spoiled with the Ruger. Have fun!!

It's been my experience, the Ruger 3 screw is the finest single six ever built. I had a .22 cal. and my father owned a brace of .357 Ruger 3 screw models. I'm now the owner of one, and my brother owns the other. I wish I still had the .22 as well.

Hi Ronald. Several have suggested this same thing, but I have lots of other testing off camera (without barrel support) that said the same thing. Poor accuracy. As a long time "precision shooter" I know the affects of barrel pressure on downrange POI, but at 15 yard with a steel frame and barrel revolver I don't think it would make a measurable difference. We'll see when I get the modified and re-crowned gun back from Ruger and if necessary, I'll modify my test. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

Great video. I was able to restore the accuracy on a couple rifles using a crown lapping tool I got from Brownell's. On a precision varmint or benchrest rifle, pushing a (one-piece!) cleaning rod from the breach with a rod guide installed will prevent the rod from abrading the throat of the chamber AND never drawing the cleaning rod in via the muzzle will increase accuracy longivity as well. Keep that crown lapping tool handy if precision varmint or target accuracy begins to go south!

I had a Ruger 22/22Mag similar to yours; it was an energy transfer bar. It would not shoot the 22 mags very well, and two chambers were sticky. I traded it off; got no time for a gun that won't shoot. Finding an older Ruger was good luck.

Another thing you could try is, instead of resting the barrel/ejector housing on the sandbag, rest the frame immediately in front of the trigger guard on the bag. Alternatively, a Bullsbag where you rest your entire forearm in the vee produces great precision for me. Looking forward to the follow-up vid.

I have one of these old Rugers too. I heard that years ago they had a recall . I might of been misinformed but I was told not to send it back. The fix was due to a lawsuit from Colt to remove the 4 clicks when cocking the hammer because its Colts patented signature.

By the way a lot of youytube folks seemed concerned about indicating the firearm being unloaded on their video. Who cares, you cant shoot me from there. Having the factory so called upgrade ruins the crisp trigger and collectors value. But I bet you already new that. Later from Texas

Many years ago I bought a junk box at an auction , it contained a River Bearcat of mid sixties vintage, the pistol was inoperable with a cylinder that was rusted in place. I called River to ask if it was worth fixing and was told to send it back . I inherited my dad's Single Six Convertible--.22 and .22 Mag cylinders came with it. Luckily, it was in my possession when my apartment was broken into, and many of his firearms were taken, including a Ruger Blackhawk, in .357 Magnum. FYI, Ruger's HAD the policy of installing transfer bars on all of their old style single action revolvers, for free, ever since the new design model was released. My dad didn't send in either of his revolvers, wanting to keep them "original." He taught me the "dead cylinder" rule, and that's ALWAYS how they've been carried. Shooting at the range or target shooting on my property, all six holes get filled.

@@TargetSuite I lost a matching numbers Winchester Model 94 Buffalo Bill Commemorative rifle and carbine set also, as well as a mid 1950's era Model 94, with a Williams peep sight on it. Dad put a Herter's 1.5x 28mm objective pistol scope where the rear dovetail was, on the (Buffalo Bill) 26" octagon barreled rifle. As soon as you brought it up to look through the scope, even as small as it was, you could instantly see the crosshairs--it was freaky, how FAST you could get "on target" with it...

The weapons were at my Mom's home, but she and Dad's divorce was just being finalized upon his passing, and she had a history of doing as she wished, rather than as she should, so I took them.
