The rough rider was my first gun. I've had it for seven years and still shoot it on a regular basis. Never a single issue other than that the screws come a little loose after 200 shots or so. I put some thread lock on them about 2 years ago and haven't had that problem since. I've moved on to own lots of guns with more firepower but I'll always love the revolver that got me into guns.

I use the Rough Rider (in .22LR) for My Basic Pistol class. Many people have never shot a SAA so it is something fun for them to do. Plus with the .22 LR low recoil and noise. Also the SAA slows shooters down to focus on the basics.

I've taken apart several SAA and the similar Colt Army 1860. Once they are in pieces, you appreciate the artistry of 19th century gunsmiths.

Just ordered the Heritage Rough Rider with the Betsy Ross grips. Excited to pick it up tomorrow! My first revolver!!

Nicely done; I've had Ruger Single Six, currently a Rough Rider, have a Pietta SAA clone, and several Blackhawks. You did a very nice presentation of the similarities and differences, which would help someone who had less than my 40-plus years of experience with single actions; and it was a pleasant watch for me as well. Another great video! I've always been faithful to the ruger brand when it comes to revolvers. Always wanted a stainless bearcat, but too expensive for how much I'd use it. Especially like the "shopkeeper" short barrel bearcat with the bird heads grip. Hopefully they'll be making the wrangler in a similar configuration. Thank you for posting this review/comparison!

Had my Ruger new model single six for 35 years. Has the both cylinders for 22 lr and 22 mag. Still one of my favorite firearms.

Always appreciated the single six but didn't want to pony up the bucks for an occasional plinker. I picked up a Wrangler as soon as one showed up in my local shop, it's not a single six but still a great little revolver.

Thanks for the great video. I always do a lot of research before I make, for me, a big purchase. I decided a few weeks ago I would like to do my part to stimulate our economy by buying locally a Rough Rider revolver. Last Wednesday on my way home from my Dr. Appt. at the VA in Charlotte I stopped by a Pawn Shop on the Hwy just outside of town. I thought I would give it a shot to see if they had a Rough Rider. Well they did not have one Rough Rider....they had three, haha. New, in the box and unfired.. Two of them looked just like yours. They were 6.5" barreled with wooden cocobolo grips. But the third one.....he was special. He was a Rough Rider Johnny Boy 4.75" barreled model. He had the Case Hardened Steel finish to his frame and very nice wood laminated grips. His action was very smooth and trigger pull crisp and just right. I also checked the fit of the cylinder in the frame. It was snug with no forward and back slop to it. I had the owner put a hold on it for me. No cash asked for because that is how people do things in the country. The next day I went to local County Sheriff to apply for the permit to buy a handgun which is required here in NC. You should check the Heritage Manufacturing website and look at the " Laminated Camo " grips they have for sale there. I think you may like them for your Rough Rider.

I have a single six in 22LR/22mag. Be interesting to compare the two Rugers. The price point is attractive. Very descriptive video like usual from you.. Looking forward to your next ones.

Thanks for the great video. I just bought a Rough Rider - I picked it over the Ruger because of the .22 WMR conversion cylinder. The Ruger is better in fit and finish from what I saw, but I like the extra "oomph" that you can get from the Heritage.

Thank you for sharing. I like the Heritage brand i have guns with this brand i love them all so durable and reliable. The safety feature is the feature i like with this brand. With the old Colts you need to load only 5 bullets for safety. The 22 comes with 9 shots also. The magnum is really impressive, the sound it made always been mistaken for a higher caliber revolver.

Nice Colt SAA. I would be so happy to own one some day, I just could never see myself ever having that kind of money for an original.

I just ordered the Ruger Wrangler in burnt bronze from Buds Gun Shop. I struggled between the heritage and Ruger but loved the burnt bronze cerakote with a black cylinder on the wrangler

I bought my oldest son a Heritage a few years ago for Christmas. Very fun revolver. I am not crazy about the safety but it is fun to shoot. His has the 22 mag conversion.

Great comparison as usual! I'd take the Ruger because of the transfer bar and other modern features vs dealing with a manual safety on a REVOLVER. I guess I'm not overly nostalgic.

Just picked up a Ruger Wrangler today. Lots of fun. A good way to shoot .22 slow and steady. I was looking at a Ruger Mk IV as well but being semi-auto, I didn't want to shoot through my limited ammo supply (and budget) too fast so the Wrangler was perfect.

Picked up a heritage 4" barrel at my local rural King for $129 plus tax love the feel will practice with it will try to keep you posted

One thing missing from all of this and that was field test. Firing all three to show what kind of groups load and reloading ease. I’ve seen in another comparison video someone said the clicks in reloading were with the heritage compared to Ruger’s because Rugers cylinder would free turn as to Heritages clicks in between round which don’t leave you looking as you load. Doing a full review is what I was looking to see including the firing. Some people will just favor Ruger because of its popularity and been around so long without comparing so seems to be important to be more in detail comparing them showing pros n cons. I got both but would and still shoot the Heritage more.

The Colt .22 was introduced in 1956 or 57 and was known as the Frontier Scout, and was a direct response to the Single-Six. The Single-Six used the Colt style action with the "four clicks from 1953-1972 before replacing that design with the design used in all of their single-actions since then. The Frontier Scout was produced until 1970 and had an alloy frame, and mechanically was virtually identical to the Heritage Rough Rider. Colt replaced it with the "New Frontier" in 1971 which featured a color case-hardened frame instead of the zinc-alloy frame of the Frontier Scout. The New Frontier was cancelled around 1978 and brought back in 1982 with the added feature of a cross-bolt safety. It was dropped permanently in 1986. In the late 50's or early 60's the German firearms manufacturer H Schmidt began manufacturing an exact copy of the Frontier Scout which was sold under a variety of names, including Hawes and Early Modern Firearms (EMF) Later Sauer & Sohn acquired the design and made them for Hawes as well as the larger Hawes revolver which was a clone of the Great Western. During this same time frame the Italian firm of Armi Tanfoglio began making the exact same design and imported them through Firearms Import and Export of Miami Florida. When I say Identical design I mean that eve most of the internal karts were interchangeable between a Colt Frontier Scout, a Scmidt or Sauer built, and a Tanfoglio built gun. The Tanfoglio built unit was by far the most prolific with guns being sold under the FIE, Armi Tanfoglio, TanArmi, Excam brand names with model names that included Buffalo Scout, Texas Ranger, E15, P22, TA22, and TA76 among others. FIE also assembled them in Hialeah Florida for Kimel in South Carolina. who sold them as a US made gun. After the 1968 Gun Control Act Tanfoglio added a manual operated hammer block safety on these guns. FIE eventually took over assembling the guns in Florida using Tanfoglio parts, and later produced the parts in Hialeagh. Around 1990 FIE reorganized as Quality Firearms Incorporated (QFI) and had redesigned the safety and made other changes calling the revolver the "Western Ranger" in 1993 QFI, now headquartered in nearby Opa Locka (both Miami suburbs) was purchased by a new owner who renamed the new company Heritage Firearms. The "Western Ranger" was re-branded the "Rough Rider" with a heavy emphasis on it being 100% made in the US. So with the Rough Rider you had a copy of a copy of a Frontier Scout.

Have the Colt Frontier Scout 22. It is a true 7/8 scale SAA in every aspect. Fit and function of the Colt blows away these replicas. My dad bought it in late '50's for $56.00 brand new. Just one of the cherished guns I inherited from him.

I have the Rough Rider with the extra cylinder. Nice! I can shoot WMRs, LRs, and shorts which makes finding and buying ammo actually possible.

I bought the RR with adjustable sights. Well pleased! (My Walther Gold Cup another fun .22)

Just got my rough rider out the other day, in 22lr it smokes real nice after the shot. Its alot of fun. pop in the mag cylender and you might feel some recoil

I bought my rough rider used with both cylinders for $79. It’s a great little gun! Super fun to shoot and ammunition is cheap as dirt. A box of 325 rounds is like $20 after tax.

I don't mind spending big bucks on a handgun. I have a P7M8 and a DW custom 1911. But I bought the HRR for about $150 just to plink with like they do in the movies and it works perfectly for that purpose. I don't mind the safety, especially useful when teaching kids to shoot a handgun. If you demand SAA authenticity, pony up the 2 grand and stop whining about these two copies. They have their place.

Love my Wrangler. Was hitting the x ring right out of the box at 50 feet.

Got the HRR as a +1 with a PT111 a few years ago. Fun shooter, not problems so far.

Bought a ruger single six for my sons Christmas last year. Rear sight had to be adjusted all the way to left to hit anything. Expected more for 500$

I have a...oh damn i cant even remember the name now. Some Italian import that's like the Rough Rider. It's a good, cheap, beater to take out to the field just to have something on hand. But if I could do it all over again I'd go with the Ruger Single 10. Though at the time they still only had the single-six available. I love Ruger firearms. They are about the best I can get for the money and my budget.

The Heritage rough Rider Army single action ,(Colt). Original issue 7.5 was cavalry model,. 4.75 was artillery model , 4.5 and 3.5 the longer was the Thunderball and the shorter barrel was the Lightning .

I have the HRR iin a six incher. Adj rear sights and green fluorescent front sight and 22 mag cylinder. Mine was about 235 $ with closing cost. Shoots fantastic so far. Wished i would have got the 9 rd one. But fun to shoot. But the wrangler with a 22mag would be fantastic.

I like the tolerances on the Ruger. Just bought one yesterday but i'm afraid of abusing it as I have not seen any stress tests aside from one video a guy made after he dropped it by accident while mowing his lawn. My concern is when carrying it on your person, and how much weight you can apply on the cylinder and frame before stuff starts to bend, and tolerances change and shit starts to move more than it already does.

I can’t get over the safety on the rough rider so went with a wrangler and ordered some sick wood grips for it.

I like my wrangler super accurate and a fun gun to shoot

I own several Rough Rider Revolvers and I just recently purchased the 16 inch barrell version Rough Rider. I simply switched out the 22mag cylinder from one of my other Rough Rider Revolvers and put the 22mag cylinder onto the 16 inch Rough Rider Revolver and the 22lr cylinder on the another revolver. I also installed a 410 gauge shotgun flashlight mount onto the long 16 inch barrell Rough Rider Revolver. I'm now considering adding a laser light to the barrell as well. With such a long barrell, upgrade possibilities are limitless.

Single action .22s are also great for trappers. Some areas have caliber limits and don’t allow semi autos for dispatching trapped game

Just bought the wrangler and the loading gate is so tight I can't open it. Took it back to dealer and she couldn't get it open. She tried several different ones in shop and could not open them either. I looked it up on net and all kinds of people complaining about this problem

I love my lcr 38spl+p but I wouldn't have a ruger single action revolver. I do own a rough rider 22lr and I really like it

have heritage rr and ruger ss, just ordered a ruger wrangler after finally handling one. im no gun snob but if you can save a bit more money to finally get a ruger you will be happier. the hrr is perfectly okay but doubtful that it will last beyond your lifetime. a used ruger ss with both 22lr and 22wmr cylinders can be found for $300 and will still have a couple of lifetimes left, as rugers are built like brick outhouses. i just wish that the wrangler came with an 8 vs 6 shot 22lr cylinder.

The nice thing about the RRs manual safety is, you can dry fire with the safety on and it will not damage the cyl or firing pin. This isn't so on the Ruger.... no safety.

I have two of the Heritage revolvers, one 4.75" "plowhandle" and one 3.5" "birdshead" model. I find them pretty slick in hand and fun to shoot. I even enjoy the manual tasks of loading and unloading them. Both are LR/WMR convertibles. I also like the manual safety lever because it allows for dry-fire. Incidentally, I also have a Ruger Single Six, but never got around to shooting it.

I opted for the ruger over the heritage today, it was only 50 more dollars.

Rough Rider is the best buy of the hands down.

I like both. I shoot better with the heritage. The Heritage does require you to threadlock the screws though or they will back out on you. Especially the extractor tube screw and a main side screw. This happens if you fast draw a lot. Even with blanks or wax.

I had a choice between the Wrangler and the RR. I went with the RR because it looked more authentic with the wood grips and blued barrel and cylinder. I agree that the frame is cheap looking. I don't like the cerakote coating on the Wrangler. That's not authentic. One question: even though the RR has a safety, the manual advises an empty chamber under the hammer, and even engraves that advice on the barrel. Does Ruger also advise an empty chamber under the hammer?

I love ruger for what they are (every man guns) but I gotta admit I'm a bit disappointed with the wrangler. The coat/color makes it look like a toy which I don't need to explain why that's a bad idea. The free spin cylinder makes it a pain to line up the ejector plus it tends to scratch the cylinder pretty bad. Function wise it's a great gun but I think it needs a bit more work.

I have a Heritage Arms 22 long rifle with the Magnum cylinder.. I hate to say this but I'm going to be 110% honest it's one of my favorite pistols... I pushed the pistol to its limitation and Beyond.. I actually like the safety.. this gun shoot straight with a smooth trigger it's incredible for the price.. I'll push the pistol out to 25 yards and I noticed that the bullet will tumble with the Magnum.. 25 yards is an obscene long shot for the pistol for any 22 pistol... the loading Gates a little small but who cares.. save yourself $300 and buy one of these great shooting Heritage arms pistols... I own a 45 caliber Cimarron 1873 Army and I own a Colt 1873 Army 45 Colt long so I know what a good gun is... the Cimarron 1873 Colt Army blows the original cult away with accuracy smooth action and Trigger work.. I have the 1873 Cimarron Colt Army Buffalo Bills signature pistol engraved it's beautiful nickel-plated

With the Ruger Wrangler if the cylinder binds with the gate open just pull the hammer a lil to loose it

Was the Herritage Rough Rider formerly FIE? I don't see why the colt is there? It looks like a large centerfire gun if so there is no VS?

I got a heritage and then ordered a 22 mag cylinder for it. Sometime later I got a chance to shoot it. One round out of 6 fired in the 22 long rifle cylinder. I then put in the 22 mag cylinder and none of six fired. Just a dull click. The Hammer spring seemed to be way to weak as dent in the rims were hard to see I called heritage and they told me my gun was out of warranty. I then did what I should have done from the start. I got a Roger super wrangler. Buy cheap get cheap junk. Heritage OK for decoration as long as you display the non safety side only other than that it is worthless

Have both the Heritage, and the Wrangler. Hats off to Ruger, as the build quality is superior in every regard compared to the Heritage. I’ve seen some reviews where the heritage gives better accuracy, yet that was with the 5 3/4 in. barrel. That extra length gives you a longer sight radius than the standard length on the Ruger,... so,.. not really an honest comparison. Fact is, I can bounce cans offhand at 25 yards with either. BACK to build quality, when you have both at the range, you can FEEL the difference in build quality, and frankly, the factory grips on the Heritage feel clunky, and fat,.. while the factory grips on the Wrangler are more svelt, and feel better in your hand, and are closer to the actual feel of the Colt New Frontier .22. This equates to better “pointability,”, and a quicker sight picture, or faster point shooting, as the gun simply points more naturally. Aesthetics,.. that safety on the side of the Heritage is BUTT UGLY,.. the grips are fat, and the finish on the frame leaves much to be desired. The Wrangler is more slim, points more naturally, is easier to load, and the Tungsten Cerakote finish I chose looks great with the cylinder, and grips in black. Bottom line,... IF you want an SA revolver that shoots .22lr, AND .22mag,.. get the Rough Rider,... and it will serve you well,..mine does, and now I just leave the WMR cylinder in it. IF you just want a kick ass little SA .22 revolver,.. Wrangler, hands down is a better quality build for $200.
