I think when I started watching, these last videos were already up so I just assumed he had stopped posting years ago. It must have been insane for you guys to have waited and then have him actually post a new video.

I would love to see more videos... but in all honesty, you have enough quality content to last me a few years as a beginner. Your channel is probably the most valued learning resource for me so thanks for that! I've been studying for about 2 years and I'm now able to have some fairly decent conversations in Japanese thanks to you. :)

This might not be considered a great idea to MIA purists, but it served me well and I wanted to share it. I find these videos super encouraging as a beginner. But even more so, the audio portion of these conversations can be a good way to start immersing with some simple editing. If you're not too advanced, but want to feel like you're listening to something closer to native - and still understand it! I took every video from this channel, converted them to MP3's and removed the silences between lines (about 23.5hrs turned into 13.5). This makes the audio more demanding, and much more time efficient. It feels more like the missing level between beginner and native. This was a somewhat unnatural edit to perform, but overall they actually sound really great. You probably would've never known. And It can be applied to a lot of sources. If you want to do it yourself, look into "Audacity" and it's "truncate silence" tool. My settings used were "Threshold: -35db, silence detection: .3 seconds, truncated to: .15 seconds. " I hope this suggestion doesn't bother Benjiro, I really appreciate your work...Good luck everyone!

...some of the best resources on youtube! the enigma of benjiro - some say he is on the same island skywalker as a recluse hung out on, others say he is walking shikoku henro pilramage - very slowly, some speculate that he runs a modest izakaya on the fuji's 23rd station. i think he is actually sharla in japan as i have never seen them in the same video. in any case, this one-off video after a 2 year absence is a very welcomed surprise. thank you sharla for all your great vids!

Hey, thanks for asking. I just thought I’d make another attempt at creating beginner content. I’m still working on how I could make them more efficiently (this one took 5+ hours - I actually didn’t type the translations on the fly this time, it was a separate take + more annotations/editing in post). I don’t really care to promote this channel as it’s not really as good as it could be (the curse of perfectionism), for example there should ideally be some kind of gradation in the difficulty of the videos. But it seems good enough for a lot of people so I’ll try and keep at it when I have the time and inclination.

Have you considered making your KZfaq content accessible to people wanting to make subtitle contributions? I would personally love having the opportunity to try and transcribe some of your beginner videos, as a way to challenge myself, and as a way to give back to the Japanese learning community. I personally think it would enhance the listening experience as well for students who might feel more comfortable with their reading comprehension than with their listening. Thank you for your videos. They have been instrumental in the process of increasing my vocabulary, giving me the confidence to speak, and giving me the opportunity to improve my listening.

I’m loving those videos! I know almost nothing in japanese, but through this slow immersion we get familiar with the words and the context makes our brain to work hard to understand the meanings, the tones, the non-verbal communication. So I guess we can very effectively learn through observation. Thanks for your videos!! And please, consider making more content, those are amazing!!

Benjiro-San, I am well aware that you receive these messages constantly, but I feel obligated to write my own. Your concept of language learning via listening to slow, smooth, and natural conversations is a potential gold mine. The comment you wrote in your channel description is 100% accurate; this kind of material is more than lacking, it borderlines on the non-existent. Of course I do not know your situation and am unaware of the simplicity or difficulty in making these videos, but I firmly believe that if more content is posted and is spread dispersed throughout different platforms (podcasts, etc.), this channel will explode. Even now I am confident that there are many people who will jump quickly onto a Patreon page to assist you financially in making these videos, and I am one of them. I currently live in Tokyo and am studying Japanese at Waseda, but I can say with a clear conscience that these videos have accelerated my progress beyond comprehension. Please reconsider making more of these. I and the rest of this little community will surely benefit and help if the opportunity arises. Thank you.
