So, you don't know me, but I'm a poet.. or I used to be. When I was still a poet, everything I did was to create resonance, let people know they weren't alone, and find our way out of the dark together. I went through some very traumatic things years ago, and the short version is I lost the mental and emotional ability to read or perform poetry without a full on breakdown and became a shut in and a recluse. I left everyone and everything behind, cut all my ties.. this timed out just before the pandemic, almost made it easy to slip away. The past six years have been a constant battle to reclaim my ability to write, perform, and exist as a whole human in the world outside of my front door. It's been babysteps that felt like swimming up river, molehills that felt like mountains, all to make tiny bits of progress, and then decide going any further was just too scary, knowing what was out there. After three years, I wrote again. At four years, I performed on a stage. At five years I tried to go back to a trauma space, and failed. Now, at year six, I was approached about putting a manuscript together, and I have been sitting on my hands because I am utterly terrified. I still rarely talk to anyone who knew me from the stage. I keep trying, but I feel like it's all just.. a waste of time. It's not worth it. I've been gone so long, and you just sort of fall out of people's lives, the space you once occupied gets filled with something else. Putting my head out of the door, writing that book, sending that message, 6 years of work to stand staring out my front door, and let it close in front of me. Someone I hadn't heard from in years sent me this song. "reminded me of you." I put the song on loop. I wept. I wrote. Suddenly there's two new poems. Then there's a setlist. I finally start organizing the manuscript. I'm going to do it, no matter what. If there's someone out there who needs something I have, they're going to get it. I don't know how this story ends, but I know it would have ended early if it weren't for this song. You don't know me, you couldn't have possibly written this song about me, and yet, it was everything I needed someone to say to me. If you ever sit and wonder "Does what I'm doing really make a difference?" "Am I the kind of artist who can save a life?" "Is the world better for having me in it" I want you to know, it does, you are, and it is. Thank you.
