Another guy at my club and I had bought all the stuff for Warcry 1.0 but never played a game. When we finally got round to it, Warcry 2.0 was out and all our cards etc were redundant. Out of sheer defiance that we use the stuff we've bought, we're just ignoring 2.0.

Really enjoyed Scott's comment right at the start of the main topic. Very insightful marking the shared experience as being important. I often hear RPG stories about how someone else's players did something in D&D like kill gods etc. and my first reaction for a long time was always "You couldn't have done that within the rules and your GM must have done something....wrong!" vs "Wow you're having a great time and that's what's important. Playing by the same ruleset really lets us... compare and relate? As to changing specific rules. I always feel overwhelmed with the number of rules as is, especially a new game. Like I'm constantly playing catch up and never know them all. My first instinct when there is a rule I don't like is that it probably has a reason and changing it may lead to some bad experiences in my limited play time. Which is silly because if I'm not enjoying my limited play time, what's the risk in changing it?

When I hear a player say they killed a god in D&D or something my first reaction is like "cool, must have been an awesome story your DM is writing"- but if I hear a DM say something like "haha yeah my players killed a god and took over the world and I couldn't stop them" my reaction is "yes you can you're the DM", even if that means breaking the fourth wall and asking your players not to do something because it breaks your campaign. Never understood the 'powerless DM' stories; even with the rule of 'yes, and' you can twist things into a no,

I love the podcast guys, watched every single one numerous times but please for the love Horus' tainted ballsack could you do something with the lighting? Your early episodes were a visual joy, just some simple colour and warmth in the video. All the episodes in this new studio look so sterile it's like you're filming in an operating room. Again chaps, love the work but please, on behalf of anyone who appreciates good lighting, make the podcast a treat for the eyes not just the ears.

Jon I paint and don't play abd as it stands I don't think or want to ever play, I paint because I find it has helped me deal wth my battle with depression. I found warhammer by chance as I building and painting warplane kits, and was given a knome to paint which pointed me in the direction of miniature figures and I bought a box of Gretchin orks not knowing anything about them, and now I'm hooked on warhammer . I've painted stormcast's, orks , space marines from ultra marines to chaos warband. Its what I like . And thats part of the hobby.

Our group is good with fudging rules and/or houseruling when it makes things more fair, as it usually evens the playing field. If someone breaking the rules for their own benefit, thats one thing we don't abide. BUT, when changing the rule makes it work better for everyone, it makes sense to implement. For us, playing is about having fun. Its more fun when its more fair (usually).

I think Jon brings up some solid points about Fantasy Football being Fantasy Football regardless of the rules and how those changes don't make it a different game/activity. BUT! I think you have to remember, one team in one FF league will not compete against another team in another FF league. Everyone you will play against this season with the team you built in a league are playing by the same rules. You don't have to worry that another team with different rules will come through and challenge you. So I think if you're doing an escalation league, yeah, changing up rules is easy because people know if they are playing a league game that everyone knows that the rule is changed- but as a player you still always have to be aware of the strategy and rules as standard because you may not always have that league to play in or other rules may change or people may end up not liking those changes.

It has been difficult to organize regular games this year for my gaming group and their stubborn refusal to try quicker and easier (and honestly much more fun) alternative rulesets has only made it harder. They are stuck in this mindset where if the rules do not explicitly state that their super space soldier is equipped with a Boltgun™ then the rulset is completely unplayable. I truly believe everyone in the hobby would be having a much better time if they knew that they can totally play in the Warhammer sandbox without having to rely on the Warhammer rules.

Not an exact comparison but D&D 5th edition has tons of optional rules which are only included on the dungeon masters approval. From a player perspective I don't particularly like it as I'll build a character and then be told I can't do something. But yeah if it's said upfront what the adjustments are then that's cool, especially if everyone agrees with the changes.

I think it has to do with the fundamentals of the game and how you're able to game plan. Does removing the double turn fundamentally change the way you play AoS? Yes it does. Does playing with a third party mini? No, as long as you can tell what it is.

I have not come across a miniature game that I, or we as a group, do not tweak the rules as we play. Often just small things here and there to have more fun. To me they're like an RPG, you have the rules you need to play, and then you tweak things to either make them better for you, or sometimes just to clarify things. Official FAQs can go flip themselves for the most part, text needed to satisfy every edge case in a tournament enviroment bores me to death. If I want everything tight and as balanced as possible I'll play chess, and I don't, so I won't.

Honestly, competitive wargames have gotten a bad rap over the years and still struggle to shake off that stigma. I am relatively new to Warhammer 40k (started with the release of 8th ed), but all of my tournament experiences have been great. I had one kinda salty opponent, but that was one out of 6 rounds. I think the problem is that the bad experiences are the ones that get shared the most (same with cheating, it does not happen often, but when it does it gets the views and clicks). Additionally, the game used to be smaller. There are more people playing now than ever, so the number of a$$holes that are going to be awful to play against, might not have decreased, but they are now a smaller percentage. At the end of the day, we are grown adults (well some kids too I guess) playing with toy soldiers. As long as you remember that, you should be able to have a good time.

WRT proxy figures, I consider it essential to growing any kind of local hobby community. If you strictly enforce an 'official-only' policy, almost no-one will get their army completed, before the game (and associated specific figures) goes out of production, or moves to a new edition, that buggers up your army point values and tactics. This is especially true, for limited duration seasonal events, as used to take place across all clubs and stores, such as 'Storm of Chaos'. Who has time to build and paint Teutogen Guard, to defend Kislev? Stick some Empire troops on a tray, tell your opponent 'They're Teutogen Guard', and get on with it.

The female vampire blood bowl model with the helm has a gorget around her throat. It can extend down the chest for additional protection so her neck is proportional. A coife is made out of chain mail and could be a full hood or just a layer attached to the lower portion of a helmet to also provide neck protection.

Oh brother where art thou… the odyssey set in ‘20s or ‘30s America The rules question is big in D&D. When the game became popular on social media, many people lost the idea of home brew rules for new players that started because of social media. It ended up being the content creators to remind people that home brew can be just as good as the official rules.

I think proxies, unique bits, conversions, and all that are totally cool. However o genuinely do not like it when the other person’s army is entirely 3D printed if we’re playing a game of Warhammer. It kinda pulls me out of the setting. A game of one page rules or whatever else is fine but if we’re playing Warhammer it bugs me when the entire army looks like it doesn’t belong. Again conversions and some proxies are totally cool still

As a game designer myself, I always encourage people to change rules - I even explicitly state that in the rules that I produce. Wargaming (for 99.24% of people) is a hobby, something you do for enjoyment in your spare time. A handful of people make a living or a business out of it (be it competition purses or content creation, etc.). A hobby isn't a hobby the second it stops being fun or bringing you joy. You indirectly point out the issue in your discussion; most people play a "major" wargaming title like Warhammer, etc. because of two things: sunk-cost, and popularity/ease of finding an opponent. No one is playing Warhammer or Age of Sigmar because the rules are good. They're not. The rules for both those games are pretty garbage. GW excels at producing the sunk-cost issue in its customers, and it shows how successful that business model is. The overwhelming majority of wargamers are not playing 40K or Age of Sigmar, but a variety of smaller, less popular games. They're also playing in the small 4-6 person groups you guys were talking about. "Hosting" games is also far bigger outside of GW products. If you want to run Game X...then you paint up two sides for Game X and you have some buddies over and they don't have to invest anything. The arms-race that is so common in games like 40K/AoS is not a necessity. It's a rarity. I game with maybe 5-6 other people most of the time. We play dungeon crawls, old west, WW2, fantasy and sci-fi skirmish, fleet battles, etc. We're all ex-GW gamers (every teenager wants to play Warhammer). We design and run games at conventions, etc. I think way too many people think that all gaming is similar to 40K/AoS and it's just not. There's a gigantic world of wargaming outside of that small bubble.

It is funny how you insist that the double turn rule is trash, when you obviously don't understand the game and how it works. You need to plan and trade as if you would lose the next turn and the turn after. You dont need to play age of sigmar to belong or to be cool. Either you enjoy the rules or you play something else that you enjoy. The latest versions are there because of effort to balance and evolution of the game style. Yes you can absolutely play the 4 page 1st version but you are actually missing out on the evolution of the game, that as we can say from the increasing popularity it must be good. yes there are always broken units and rules but if you consider the number of rules / factions / warscroll interactions there will allways be something broken.. that sells too.
