A Sunday Roast is a traditional meal in Britain. Lets compare it to say your Thanks Giving dinner lol. Its a Roast meat either Chicken, Lamb, Beef, Pork, or Gammon, we have mash potatoes, Roast potatoes, mixed vegetables, Yorkshire pudding & Gravy. We normally have it every Sunday as a family meal as generally we don't work Sundays.

I'd also recommend, that beer 'pumped' from a large pull handle will likely be cask beer which is proper ale. Anything from some little tap will likely be keg or fizzy lager. My basic rule is the bigger and shinier the tap the more I avoid it!

Cider is made from fermented apples - it can get very strong. It's not a flavored beer. Sometimes it will have a natural carbonation, but it can also be flat. It can be clear or cloudy. A still cloudy cider is often a sign of a stronger cider.

She's visiting pubs in the upmarket area of London - Kensington. Pubs had to close at 11pm not so long ago but now they can apply to open the hours they want. Most open 8am till 12am most days apart from a few weekend nights when 2am or 3am is normal. Funny experience I had a few months back was meeting an American lady visiting London (and the UK) for the first time. She went to the bar in the pub and ordered £8 worth of drinks but left a £2 coin presumably trying to tip the bar lady. After a few minutes the bar lady came over to our table and handed her the £2 coin saying she forgot to pick up her change! 😁 You can drink outside in any place except if a byelaw has been passed in a certain area then you'll see no drinking signs on lamp posts. You can be fined in these areas for drinking. You'll see lots of people in the parks drinking with friends on a sunny day.

A pub and a bar are different things, pub is short for 'public house's it's more of a relaxed atmosphere and serves booze (also usually food) as opposed to a bar where it's more focused on the booze. Pubs usually shut at 11 ish while bars/clubs are open later

Another great reaction, thanks guys. Sorry this is a bit of a long one. I Live in London and worked as bartender and bar manager of pubs, clubs and vanues around the UK for 15 Years, until about 5 yeasr ago. The video you watched is from the very nice bits of London and offers quite a sanitized view of pubs. Some of them are as she described but pubs are very varied in the UK. For instance some allow kids, other don't and others do only at certain times of day. Drinking in or out of the pub will generally depend on the eaxact circumstances of your trading license and the preferences of the local council. Also, some pub close at 11pm-ish but most I worked for closed at around 2am, 4am or 6am. Waiting at the bar can be good but when it's at full throtle on a friday or saturday night it can be 40 wide and 10-20 deep with people waiting and so it might not be appreciated and nice orderly eye contact isn't easy. Howeerver some chiller or country pubs I've worked in are pretty much how she described. Just some personal observations from my time working in the industry. Experiencing the pubs are definitely an icebreaker and quite quick way to get in touch with aspects of British culture. Many thanks again for all the great videos that help keep me sane while I'm writing my dissertation.

Attitudes to drinking is one of the big differences between Brits and Americans. I've travelled around the US and drinking felt like committing a cardinal sin. Here, it's almost compulsory. For example, it's Friday. What that typically means is fifteen pints, a kebab and then wreck a bus shelter. And we love the chaos.

During the First World War the government of the day instituted public closing times to limit alcohol consumption as it was affecting the war effort and production. Pubs opened at 11:00 am and closed at 2:00pm the doors then remained closed until 6:00pm last orders were called at 10:30pm and closing time was 11:00pm to enable the workers to get a good nights sleep. These restrictions continued long after the war and were again enshrined in the 1921 licensing Act. In 1988 some of the restrictions were lifted and all day drinking was allowed between the hours of 11:00am and 11:00pm and in 2005 pubs were allowed to apply for a licence enabling 24 hour opening. However most establishments now open around 11:00am many close in the afternoon after about 2:00 as there is not a lot of trade and staff still need to be paid. Things then tend to open in the early evening when people get off work and want to go for a drink on the way home or just after getting home. Most people need to get up for work in the morning so 11:00pm closing is still quite prevalent, however in city centres and at weekends establishments tend to close later. Pub landlords need their sleep as well!

UK and Ireland are the exception for nearly everything in Europe. Saying that they act as if they were located off the US/Canada'eastern coast instead of across the channel from France is really accurate. As for drinking culture since they close early they often go and get shitfaced quickly.
@AutoAlligator
@AutoAlligator 15 күн бұрын
It is inaccurate...In France you can drink at home with family at 14 legally. (Similarly in England). In England you can drink in a pub/bar at 18 years old. In the US it is 21 years old. So you can vote, procreate, join the military (die for your country) but not drink alcohol until you are 21...very strange behaviour.

Gin and tonic is actually good for you, With the recent invention of carbonated water, quinine was used as a flavouring to create tonic water which, as it just so happens, is a perfect complement to gin. Gin and tonic was therefore drunk as an anti-malarial and became the distinctively British colonial drink

Feeling bloated is from the carbon dioxide: so in the UK ask for real ales. These are drawn up by a hand pump, electric pump or straight from the barrel via a tap. They come in a wide variety of tastes (the 1st pint will taste not as good as the following pints) and are served cool but not cold. I prefer the lower alcohol beers (~3%) such as Ruddles best bitter, though you will find different products regionally.

Re American beer - the problem you have is like practically all American food/drinks (I've lived there for a year or so) is that it's full of additives etc. American beer lolly/water is so weak non-Americans can drink heaps of it. Some pubs as said do stay open later, most locals close at 11pm. some pubs can stay open for 24 hours, it depends on your license and what license you have, license you have, You have to do a coarse first to be able to apply for a lincense, then you have to apply for a license through the court, but it also has to be agreed to my the local council and police. many pubs, ie locals are on housing estates, so its not wanted, loud noise 2am in the morning, while families are trying to sleep, people have work, also on the police side, they cant be everywhere, so closing locals at 11, and allowing more city and town center places to open later, it easier to police, and drink can be trouble some, more at turn out times, people waiting for taxi's wanted to get home, it causes trouble who taxi it is, que jumpers, also for staff in the locals, being able to get public transport home, or getting a taxi, before the later pubs and clubs turn out, its not to long ago, when the usual pub hours were, 11am till 3pm, then 6pm till 11pm monday to saturday, and sundays being slightly shorter in those days, if you were out for a days drinking, you went to a resturant at 3pm, they were allowed to serve all day, buy a bowl of soup, then stay there till 6pm drinking, as you could buy alcohol all day with a meal, bowl of soup was a meal, we used to go to the chinese and by wonton soup,

Hi guys. @7:17 Brian says 'outside you can't de rowdy and throwing shit'. You can't do that inside the pub either or you'll get your head stove in 😂😂. Also, you can't wander off down the street with your drink or you'll get arrested and possibly charged with stealing the drinks glass. Buying a round for your friends is good 'cause you won't have to go to the bar again for some time. If you feel beer is too bloating we do a great selection of Spirits, Gin, Whisky, Rum and cocktails. Pubs close around eleven pm here which shocks Americans, but if you're drinking since lunchtime like most real drinkers you'll probably have enough dy then. Besides, there's plenty of nightclubs to go to if you have the stamina. Hope you guys get over here soon. Hugs 🫂

You used to be able to find pubs near steelworks in the UK (we have very few steelworks left) where the beer could be very potent as it was brewed for the steelworkers, again as an outsider they may have limited the number of pints they would sell you.

Actual proper rule. I know for FACT! A commercial German beer called Holsten Pils significantly reduces hangovers as does good quality spirits. I can drink 8 Budweisers and feel like death but drink a 70cl bottle of shit-hot rum and be good the next day. (Within reason)

Pubs are not the same as nightclubs who serve drinks 24hrs if they can be bothered to stay open...Most drinking in the UK happens during pub hours. Nightclubs offer something completely different (usually for students to take drugs etc...totally normal)

What she said would be similar to most pubs nowadays across the UK and Ireland, but pubs you'd want to stay away from usually are not in the main part of the city. Just ask locals to which areas/streets/roads to avoid and you should be fine.

Glasgow (Scotland) is a different for street drinking (for our own self-preservation) Technically, you can't drink on the streets. If you keep it hidden & discreet you'll likely get away with it, and if you're caught by the police you'll usually just be made to pour it away and told to behave (just be polite or you risk escalation). You can probably also play the "tourist" card too, if needed. Police won't want the paperwork over it unless you deserve it. The locals will absolutely not care that you're doing this Our pubs close at midnight (some have late licenses), nightclubs (and late license pubs) close at 03/0400, then you can hit a casino until 0600 if you're still in a semi-respectable condition *these times aren't last orders, these are the staff shouting "I'm going home, off you f--k 🙂"

See I only drink Brown ales they don't actually make feel bloated. See what I did with my 2 sons was let them drink at home when they were younger. It's not illegal in the UK to drink under the age of 18 in your home with your parents permission. So you can teach your children to respect beer and not abuse it when they are actually legal to drink in pubs. My lads won't actually get to drunk when out drinking now they leave being drunk when in a safe environment like the house.

Don't go by what she says in this video . I doubt if she has ever been outside of London ! She is in an upmarket part of London. Pubs around the UK can be VERY different ! I have never been in a pub that allows you to have a " taster " ! She said she " wanted a beer" then orders a Japanese LAGER !! Not the same thing at all !! Beer and Lager are 2 different things ! NEVER stand at the bar !! You WILL be told to move as you are blocking other people from ordering. Most pubs will NOT allow you to take your glasses outside, unless they have a BEER GARDEN. Drink prices vary drastically around the UK. In London you may get charged 3 times the amount you would in my town. If you want to get drunk on Cider very quickly, you need to try a SCRUMPY cider 😵‍💫🤯 To " buy them a drink" means that the barman/barmaid will take the money and either have a tip jar or have a drink at the END of their shift. NOT during their shift !! Drinking on duty is NOT done !! CHEERS.....BOLLOCKS !! No one says that anymore !! Not LAST CALL....LAST ORDERS ! Pub hours are usually 10.30am to 10.30pm.

Pubs in my area will offer you a taster if they do guest cask beers. You just say "what does that one taste like?" We always say cheers for the first round, and usually for each subsequent round as a thank you to the person buying.

Most place the pubs do not extend the hours. You can have a Half (pint) if you are a lightweight (I am sometimes). Some of the overseas beverages are brewed under license in the UK. Would suggest a Beer Garden rather than next to the road in most places.

If the gassy piss they pass off as Lager these days bloats you up you might want to give real Ales a try - no carbonation. & as much as it's ashes in the mouth of this Englishman - German Lager is wonderful. A rule of thumb with Pubs is if it looks like a shithole it's going to actually be a shithole & is probably best avoided. The chick in the video was in a nice part of London visiting nice Pubs.

Your comment at about 4:00 about beer making you feel bloated. I Don't think you have grasped that the beer here in the UK is for the most part quite different to what you call beer in the US. Most of the US beer I have encountered, and please don't take offence, I regard as fizzy tasteless p*&s. While we do have lager type beers here, there is a great number of traditional beers and ales that both much less carbonated and usually have a higher alcohol content and quite different taste to US lager types I have come across. You would need to try a traditional Bitter, Pale Ale or Stout to really understand the difference. There are many local breweries that have their own style and flavour, one of the pleasures of visiting different parts of the country is to try the local brew.
