*RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World opens July 26 at Film Forum in New York before expanding to cities across the country.*
RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World is a feature documentary about the role of Native Americans in popular music history.
RUMBLE tells the story of a profound, essential, and, until now, missing chapter in the history of American music: the Indigenous influence. Featuring music icons Charley Patton, Mildred Bailey, Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Robbie Robertson, Randy Castillo, and others, RUMBLE shows how these talented Native musicians helped shape the soundtracks of our lives.

I really enjoyed this wonderful film about music, history, and Native Americans. I will go see it again and tell everyone about how wonderful it was. As a Native American, Apache, I was empowered by all that my ancestors have done in spite of all the oppression. As a radio DJ I will be playing the music.

There's a book, several or many, really, you ought to read. The one I am thinking of first is "Not Stolen," by Professor Jeff Flynn-Paul. All Americans born on U.S. soil are natives, BTW. My ancestors have been in North America since the 17th century. Link Wary was so proud to be an American Indian, that he moved to Sweden and married a Swedish woman.

Just saw this film at my local theater. It got a standing ovation from the movie audience at the end. :) I came right back again the next night and took notes for further research. It was way too much stunning information to take in the first time through. And what a trip down musical memory lane!

My dad prefers American Indian because this land was never America before colonization. He sees native Americans as the people born here after america was founded by white settlers. Prefacing indian with American makes it more of a modification to the term indian than the identifying ethnicity.... No native American existed if america wasn't founded yet 🤷
@PlanetSedge

@@gotninjalotusness So how does prefacing Indian with 'American' take out / pre-date America? (Or lose the reference to India for that matter?) Makes even less sense actually..(?)
@mrstcj6069

@@gotninjalotusnesswhat you just said makes zero sense. Maybe reword? or actually I don't care that much if you do or dont.... Every indigenous/native person of the America's I ask, does prefer indigenous, some are just fine with with native.. what I found most preferred is that you respect and understand before colonization this was never India. The government historically used the title Indian in the most disrespectful and negative way. "Indian" and "savages" went hand and hand when written in government context. These are my words/feelings and I come from colonizer ancestry. I use indigenous or ask to be safe because it's a sensitive subject that validates enough respect to ask.

"Rumble" was never banned in the U.S. I remember hearing it on the radio in the late 1950s. Link Wray always said that the sound was due to a damaged speaker on his amp. He liked the sound so he used it for this song. Link Wray was so proud to be a "Native American" that he moved to Sweden and married a Swedish woman.

Link also served as a medic in the Korean War, contracting tuberculosis during his tour of duty. One of his lungs was removed in 1956. Later, at his home in Maryland, his six-year-old son drowned in a pond on the property. As far as moving to Sweden, in 1979 he married a Dutch woman and they moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Furthermore, there is a long tradition of American musicians finding favor in Europe, especially starting after WWII. Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, Kenny Clarke, Oscar Pettiiford, Hazel Scott, Stan Getz, and many more made the trek, finding new opportunities and audiences in Paris and Stockholm. Some stayed, some didn't, but the die was cast. Seen in that light, Link's decision doesn't seem all that unusual. By the way, @deaddocreallydeaddoc5244, have you ever been to Europe?

Awesome, eye-opening education on the ReaL catalysts of American iconic BLUES - the roots of aLL the righteous rebel rock & influential activism - driven at the deepest level by the sounds & songs made by indigenous people long b4 1st contact. Tho traditional native music was, shockingly, banned outright ("Natives were treated worse than slaves") its power as their cultural lifeblood permeated & strengthened the spiritual soul of American music-making.. Far from being forgotten & irrelevant, this film blows the lid off Native inspiration at the core of our most iconic music - past, present & future.. No mistaking Native influence has been huge - & keeps growing, like a magnet drawing the most epic moments to its timeless beating heart..

Natives were treated worse than slaves 😂 natives owned black slaves 😂 ever heard of the 1842 slave revolt in the Cherokee nation? Where black slaves rose up against their Cherokee masters! The choctaw Indian female slave owner Lavinia pitchlynn Harkins had her black slave lucy burned alive at the stake. The Cherokee Indian james vann had a slave hung by her thumbs and another slave burned alive. Sophia burthen pooley wrote about being owned by the Iroquois mohawk Indian joseph brant and being abused his Indian wife. The Chickasaw Indian Jackson Kemp who owned 61 slaves and who owned the black actor don cheadles family had 20 slaves that ran away. The creek Indians were selling black slaves and runaway black slaves to Benjamin Hawkins. There were black slaves that died on the trail of tears and many were kids. The black slave prince killed his choctaw Indian slave owner Robert Harkins.

I just finished watching this and a good film it was (despite the cheesy re enactments of Link Wray in his 'shack')...but seriously, no mention of Karen Dalton?! Yeah they used her song over the end title credits, but not a mention of this incredible singer. A serious omission considering she was Cherokee on her mother's side...I'm not even going to mention Jimmy Carl Black, also M.I.A...oh I just did.

NO mention of Jimmy Carl Black? But numerous comments by Rolling Stone magazine writer David Frick; a magazine with ZERO credibility. And what was the dramatized bs with an actor portraying Link Wray? In spite of it's numerous merits, this movie could still have been a lot better. But hey, what do you expect from filmmakers too young to have any real background of their own? Cheap tactic using Link Wray to draw people to see a something that repeatedly drops the ball. And why feature Jimmy Page who is notorious for ripping off other people's music and calling it his own? I was going to give this film 3 stars but it's shortcomings are so egregious, I think it falls short of even that. Sad that people who consider this movie "amazing" have no clue how ignorant they are. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ob-kesyita3GiYE.html

I'm certainly no indian. I'm a proud white man. My ancestors were at Jamestown. And my ancestors, like lots of other white people's ancestors, fought native Americans. Obviously, that was long ago. I know a couple of native Americans, but not very well. But I'm absolutely the biggest Link Wray fan that there is. "Rumble" was the 2nd tune that I learned on the guitar when I was 14 years old. Of course, "Rumble" isn't the ONLY great work by Link Wray. He has MANY great songs & instumentals. For the life of me I can't understand why he's not in the RocknRoll Hall of Fame. He is definitely one of the great pioneering rock& roll guitarist.🎸

Researchers went to Africa to find traces of the blues. No traces were found. Even Buddy Guy went to a place were so called roots of the blues should be found and he could not find it. Meaning he could not hear similarities in the music culture of Africa and the blues. So that is almost certain that blues as a whole probably did not came as a whole from the African coast. So where does the blues come from? Officially we don't know. And unofficially it comes from Afro Americans. But we just showed that no traces were found at the coast of Africa. So were did this wailing, mourning sound come from? This deep beat? Since Europeans came to America they had sometimes peace and sometimes not so much peace with native Americans. Much of the time Native Americans were seen as dangerous. Europeans did not value the culture of native Americans a lot. So not much documentation. These two things can belong together. Cause there is a strong beat in Native America music. And Native American music has wailing and mourning ways of singing. Plus the fact that Natives lived with ex slaves to give them a safe place. Both had hard times. Both had musical styles. In my opinion they played eachother music. It is to me getting clearer and clearer that Blues is a cooperative style. Both Native and African and also European because of the European harmonies on the guitar and or piano.
