I finally found a mason... YAY, I will watch every one of your videos to get these great ideas to forward to him, like the Lime Motar? I know our codes up here are laxed compared to yours. I wish I had your talent, I would tackle the job myself. I am impressed with your work with the attention to detail.

I was a Federal Construction Inspector -- I always said that codes and specifications were just "guidebooks" and we also called the SPECS "The WEASEL WORDS" (because the contractor would want to try and "weasel" me and I would want to Weasel them back! What I really was doing was reaching COMPROMISE -- where we were both happy with the way we came up to be able to interpret those "Weasel Words"!

Thanks for the email -- I saved it then deleted the comment and the reply so you don't get a lot of unwanted emails -- I will get those plans and specs to you for your comments. Again I thank you for agreeing to look at them and for ALL the outstanding videos you create! You are are a true professional of your trade. And you are not afraid to say when you are not sure how something will work -- but you take the time to think it through and improvise if need be --- That' a sign of real talent in my book! At 75 I am still improvising every day! LOL

You're quite the craftsman, it's nice to see guys that care. I am a commercial mason in Pennsylvania. If you have never been to Williamsburg, VA you should make your way down sometime. Absolutely stunning brickwork from the colonial era.

Thanks! I’ve never been, but I’m a huge fan of colonial brickwork. I’ll put it on my bucket list.

Really looking forward to seeing this installed. As for building and trade codes, I agree that they are a necessary evil. You need codes to prevent dangerous building methods that have been known to fail, but there is definitely “industry influence” brought into the mix my interested parties such as manufactures. But when it comes to arguing about codes, there are two types of people: those who complain because they don’t understand them and feel it just makes their job harder to do, while the true professionals like you who DO understand them will argue about how codes need to be improved, not because it makes our jobs harder to do, but because it can just make it harder to do a good job!!

Great video, I’ve built several fireplaces,also built in code inspection states , NY , Mass . I built them to the inspectors demands , firebrick airspace and secondary brick wall to carry smoke chamber. Built on exactly like you are doing in this video about 18 years ago. I completely agree with you about the code book and blurry definitions / grey areas with nobody to ask questions to clarify. I believe all of us masons with at least 10 years experience building fireplaces should write our own code book to submit to our state inspectors,if your state even has inspectors. Great video, I’ve had all the same questions you have, I just build every fireplace as safe as I would at my own house with my children sleeping next to it . The weasels that write the codes on refractory cement surely have stock in the companies manufacturing the products, they write these codes having never laid a brick. Just do what you feel is correct and safe .👍🏼👍🏼

Not firebrick but there are colored types of refractory brick.

Hey so in reference to your thoughts on firebox thickness being 12".. what would happen if you chopped up some flue tile and layed it between the two layers of brick in the firebox? Wouldn't that make it so the thickness would only have to be 10 inches?
@chadvaillancourt
@chadvaillancourt Жыл бұрын
This is actually a really clever idea, it had never crossed my mind. You could actually use firebrick and refractory mortar on the backside to reduce the minimum thickness down to 8”. These are definitely options to consider if space is limited. Thanks for the input! Very smart suggestion!

@@chadvaillancourt oh your welcome. I've been building chimneys around Ma for a few years working for different chimney guys.. I love watching your videos because you pay attention to detail and take your time and your stuff comes out really nice. ALot of guys rush through everything and don't care how good the finished product is.. it's crazy to me.
