One thing I've had to overcome in the past, as well as experienced as an Actor on other sets is to work within your means. Too often run-and-guns jump into a situation where they've underestimated things. And that is when the problems arise and you're either headed for disappointment or delays, ultimately leading to lost time/footage. Plan ahead, plan smart and have fun!

Hey Zach, Great video as always and love the list, especially the mention of the 3 ranges which is something I'm always trying to remember. I think the only thing that I would add is to always have your camera ready to shoot. So many times I've missed the great money shot or magic moment of emotion that gives feeling to the story by putting my camera down or away. Keep that camera ready as you run and gun and you'll be more likely to get the shot that stands out. Thanks for the vid. J

Lav-mic pro-tip: If you’re going under the wardrobe, Affix the mic securely to their clothing because rubbing against skin doesn’t make the swooshing sound 👍

One tip I would add is adapting everything you use to one mount type to speed things up. So for example, I have a mechanical steadicam and a video fluid-head tripod that uses manfrotto cheeseplates but my other gear all are arca swiss plates. So I just used peak design capture clips which have a quarter-twenty thread on the bottom to convert the manfrotto plates to arca swiss so that everything is the same quick release system and I never have to screw and unscrew anything while running around. They are all the same quick release.

Great video Zach. You are a great filmmaker, very talented. Just one question. For run and gun filmmaking, do you record on autofocus and auto exposure? Or do you focus and expose manually? Thank you Zach. Keep up the amazing work.

good stuff, my run and gun is for my travel show, I am on location showing off a place, never know what I will be in until I get there, and a lot of time I don't have a lot of time to set up stuff. I usually always carry way more than I need too because of this. And since I am always in front of the camera and most of the time behind it makes it more hard to do. I do have a camera guy that helps sometimes though too so that is good.

I have a 35mm 1.4 for my a7iii. Thoughts on using apsc mode to crop in and get around a 55mm focal length vs maybe going with the 24-70 2.8 sigma to get a wider range of focal lengths at the cost of low light?

Oof! RIP Drone. This is exactly why I was afraid to pick one up. I am that guy who crashes it into the side of a building in the first 20 minutes. lol

If you're still in this thread, I have a question. Is log good to shoot in when doing run and gun? Im new to log and am realizing how variable the exposure can be when moving from spot to spot which seems like I cant continue shots in log if changing angles or rooms

Great video! I have always wanted to make films (more narrative films like horror, drama, action etc.) but I can't decide what camera to start with. there are so many choices. I can't decide between Canon, Sony, or Panasonic or mirrorless or DSLR. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you for any help you can give me. The most I can spend is $700 but I would love to find something a little bit less expensive. Thanks!
