Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are back with ‪@DapperEcho‬ in his server to run a triple header train to the coal mine! This train is a super heavy train running up a 4% grade so we needed all 3 engines to be able to pull this mega load!

I'm pretty sure most of these narrow gauge railways were single track. The whole point was to keep costs down. Maybe ask Hyce. I was interested to see your reaction to this world Dapper has been playing. It does look good, albeit not really accurate when it comes to the type of trains/rail in use.
@Hyce777

Good lord, yeah, double track narrow gauge is pretty much pointless. If you have room for two narrow gauge tracks, you certainly have room for a standard gauge track, which, utilizing much larger cars and locomotives, means... fewer trains, less maintenance, but similar cargo hauled.
@TheCobraCommander
@TheCobraCommander 2 жыл бұрын
And more to the point, most US railroads drive on the right side while other railroads like the UK drive on the left side. Standard gauge, that is. Narrow gauge, yeah, I've seen vids of the Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec, and they're both single track.
@woodbees2801

Where I live there is a narrow gauge railway originally built in the 1880is as single track to transport cargo. Today it only runs comuter services and large parts of it have been expanded to double track. There are plans to build a very expensive tunnel for it to be connected to the central station. On the busier sections of track trains run every couple of minutes and on the single track sections once every forty minutes to an hour.

For building track by waterfalls, I have biked on a railroad grade that had a man made water shoot which went right under where the track would've been. Kettle Valley Railroad (KVR) is the one, can't remember where it was but I know most of the stations of the KVR are right by the Coquihalla (couple station sites got wiped out in the mud slides tho). The wood used is soaked in oil or tar so water is not really going to effect it as much (think of it like pressure treated wood you buy at the hardware store), even in modern times the beams only get replaced every 5-10 years using the same method of treating the wood.

the math talk at 21:00 reminds me of a talk I had about how a bicycle's front tire always travels a further distance than the back unless you go in a perfect line, because the front tire is making larger turns and the back takes a shortcut to keep up. This also means that the front tire is spinning faster overall. So, Just like how the inside rail is steeper on a inclined turn, the tires on a bike don't travel at the same speed, even though they are fixed to the same frame

37:38 this is exactly the reason why Mercedes F1 cars are gray and are called the Silver Arrows: they used to not paint their F1 cars to save on weight and be faster so they just had the color of bare metal. That color just kinda stuck when they went back to actually applying paint to their F1 cars and now it’s just more of a tradition.

I still have my O scale trains I used to put around the family Christmas tree when I was young. Collected some more track pieces from various garage sales and other hobbyists over the years. Been sitting in my closet for many years. Tracks could use a bit of shinning but the loco's should still work. They don't have the horn feature but a drop or two of fluid and they will huff and puff.

Yes, modern mainline freight does use tarps, but generally only on open top hoppers. If they are carrying product that needs protection, the product is stored in a boxcar, or individually wrapped if carried on an open car. Being that Pine Valley Lumber has no treatment facilities, it can be assumed that all lumber products are indeed raw wood.

Not with Rails as they've always been done but the Radius of the inner rail is sharper than the outer rail which adds additional friction to the wheels on the inner track compared to the outer track.

An easier way to explain the steep inner rail thing might be to visualize the up angle of spiral stairs and the fact that often for stairs going around a small center 3 or 4 steps Sometimes depending seem like they almost drop straight down while the outside is more regular. Using this reference since most people have probably encountered stairs and maybe even spiral ones.

with the signs that are coming in, this kind of setup would look great. Also, here's how the math works. the inside is shorter with the same height. and steepness = height/distance. therefore, it is steeper. It could be that it was procedurally generated one time by the devs and now everyone gets that map.

....... It's more of the Rolling stock doesn't have the weight for Spring switches to work properly. Most of the Rolling stock on the Narrow gauge Railroads were wood construction and when steel construction was available for the rolling stock on the Narrow Gauge the Great Depression hit causing near bankruptcy for every Narrow Gauge railroad in the US. The other reason spring back switches never really appeared on Narrow gauge is rolling stock dimensions in comparison to switch dimensions. Switches on narrow gauge are shorter in length compared to standard gauge and the rolling stock on Narrow gauge is essentially too long for a spring back switch work to properly without risking derailment. The weight of the loco thing would only apply to engines like "Betsy", Eureka, and the Glenbrook. The K-36s and K-37s are literally Standard Gauge Heavy Mikados engines adapted to run on Narrow Gauge cause the D&RG was planning to Standard gauge their whole system but never did cause the money ran thin halfway through.
@matthewgray1699
@matthewgray1699 2 жыл бұрын
That's not the case, you set the spring tension to what weight stock you're running. I run a narrow gauge railway and all our switches are sprung and have no problems at all. Also they work better when the stock is longer than the switch, you don't want all the wheels on the switch blade at the same time otherwise its trying to slide across with the full weight of the car on it. Sure there's a risk of derailment if you roll back when halfway across, but there's still the same risk if you have more than one car and roll back. The other cars will try to diverge if you reverse back and still pull the train off the rails

I think the inner rail only has to be steeper if both rails must maintain the same length. Basically, if the wheels on both rails are locked together then the rails have to be the same length, but if the wheels can rotate independently then they do not have to maintain the same length

Rail wheels are always fixed axles. They have coned wheels to allow variable wheel diameter, on curves the inner wheel moves inwards to roll on its smaller diameter as it has less distance to travel, the outer wheel moves outwards onto its larger diameter. The inner rail on a curve is always shorter otherwise the nominal gauge wouldn't be maintained. (the true gauge is actually NOT maintained in a curve, its widened but that's another story)
