Running a Pokemon Business, But Without Margins On Sealed Product...

The market continues to be all over the place, but that doesn't mean that stores can close up shop and wait for things to balance out. What can stores and collectors do in order to stay open when they lose all of their margins on sealed product?

Stores buying boxes from distributers for 85 dollars and pre-order selling them for 130 should have been enough wiggle room for profit. Instead they got greedy and now nobody wants the boxes because they upped printing to meet demand.

If people are doing that, they dont deserve to have customers. Anything above msrp is unacceptable. If people cant get a good enough margin from their distributor, then maybe they need to figure out how to improve that relationship or switch the business over to something more profitable and stop selling pokemon cards. If people are making $45 of profit per box then they are making more than they deserve to be.

I can tell you that we not buying boxes for 85 dollars in europe. We get them from around 130 dollar each from the biggest distributers. Crazy right! And thats in cases. Would you buy one box thats even more. Big stores will ofc get them for less. But for many like me thats crazy! So no profit margin on the booster boxes. We get more profit for just sell singel packs.

TwiceBakedJake manipulates the market , He does stuff months in advance and if you notice he always down plays it and says it is not worth meddling in. Fast forward time then he talks about it later and then creates hype and sells at a profit. I always get mad listening to him when he down plays things. YOU NEVER DOWN PLAY THINGS UNLESS YOU WANT TO MANIPULATE MINDS

@@potatopack So what is he allowed to do? Is he supposed to shill every product? Or downplay every product? Or hype some things and then downplay others? Or should he downplay when it's not worth much and hype when it starts to go up? essentially just following the trend? Or should he go against the wave and have reverse opinions of the current market? I'm sorry I couldn't help myself, if you don't like someone why would you watch their content? There is millions of pokemon content creators to choose from...just apply the today filter on KZfaq ...most of it is crap , just Timmys trying to get some views for a channel that has no purpose other than documenting their loss of money and gain of shiny cardboard, it's just a game bro... But you will keep watching these guys bc they make some of the best content in their niches lol

You also have to remember certain states have taxes on the businesses. Then, if you're not a registered business you're most likely not going to itemize your expenses (unless you're selling enough to do so) and even with/without the itemization you're paying personal bracket taxes on the sales in general. These breakeven numbers are a base line. It's like buying a car/laptop at the base price and adding in required costs based on the situation.
@christianpatterson4777
@christianpatterson4777 3 жыл бұрын
This isn’t how taxes work.
@AECollectsLLC
@AECollectsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
@@christianpatterson4777 This is very general so it's not going to be exactly correct. Yes, I'm a CPA that's just an auditor not a tax professional, but I'm confident enough that I will know where to research when I do need to know the exact details. Also based on my own experience, what Danny explains in this video is pretty much a breakeven not involving taxes and other costs. I'm just trying to explain to the consumer/non-seller that there are more complex costs and that this is just a starting baseline - so even booster boxes at less than $100 is not very viable to the survival of stores.

A business with excess product should sell for whatever they can get and move on. Most companies at scale know the dangers of stale inventory, and that’s why they are willing to sell at a loss to get rid of excess products. In the case of Pokémon, keeping some sealed product makes sense as long as the cash to buy enough new items is still available. Battle styles wasn’t that fun though, and although it may be worth more someday, I can’t see buying battle styles considering the sets coming out soon.

Hi Danny, my question: shops buy a box for $80 from wholesalers, but can you write off/depreciate your supply of booster boxes at the end of the year? So let's say you are unable to sell your battle styles booster boxes, you essentially write them off in the coming years. I don't know how this works exactly, I am just looking into this stuff as I might be interested in opening a webshop in the future.

@@DannyPhantump I'm assuming your shop is in USD right? Are you pulling data from places like tcg player? I'm just trying to understand pricing. My LGS has stuff lower than yours and im in Canada using CAD. Specifically, I noticed my local shop is selling the sun&moon elite boxes for around $94.52 cad. Yours is 89.99 USD for the 2 of them. Which bottoms out to 112.30 CAD after conversion before shipping and taxes (which I would be paying here). Maybe it isn't twice for the two of them (I thought they were individual at first) but it's still higher. Is that because of the currency conversion maybe?

I pay very much on the upward end of your price scale as a new store for a booster box. My allocation was only 5% for the past few sets. Pokemon has been a waste in terms of stress and trying to make sales. I sell my boxes at $115 shipped and buyers still want it for less. No offense to anyone in the pokemon community, but you guys want the cheapest stuff imaginable. And it doesn't help when Online only sellers can push $90 boxes because their distributor price is lower and their overhead fees are low.

How can you call it a business when you don't make profit off of your sales? Imo at that point you are nothing more than an unpaid distributor.
@madmaxdelta
@madmaxdelta 3 жыл бұрын
That’s because it’s akin to buying a pallet of product. The more you buy from the distributor, the more they bring the price down because you’re buying in bulk. Booster boxes are the same thing. The consumer is buying 36 packs in bulk. This product was never meant for the way its consumed today so I believe that’s why booster boxes should be lower. We are buying in bulk when you get one. Booster boxes shouldn’t be counted in the same category as your normal consumer products. You’re selling those knowing it’s a quantity sell over with lower margins but you sell more of this bringing returning business. So 5-10 profit per box for a bulk buy seems about right. That’s how all of you sellers buy from the distributors so why is it different for the consumer? Solely speaking booster boxes.
@DblIncertion
@DblIncertion 3 жыл бұрын
You think tying up $90 per booster box for 3 months hoping to get allocation only to make $5-$10 maybe down the road is a viable model if your any smaller of a LGS than someone that can afford 1000+ boxes at a time?
@madmaxdelta
@madmaxdelta 3 жыл бұрын
@@DblIncertion first, no seller the size of Danny and many others who order pallets is paying that price. Typical price, even as of today price sheet that I saw, is 76-78 per booster box. Some even lower, as of today. Secondly, booster boxes were never meant to be consumed by the public in the same manner. They’re mean for LGS to sell by the pack. It’s why they get to purchase them from the distributor at lower prices themselves. However LGS have overhead costs not associated to online sellers. Even still, it’s a bulk item that is priced on buying in bulk. The seller gets to buy in bulk to save money, why doesn’t the consumer get to? On this specific item
@vRareStore
@vRareStore 3 жыл бұрын
@@madmaxdelta as someone with a big store nobody is getting booster boxes for $75 lowest possible is around $83-86 per booster box, selling a box for $5 profit is a not healthy market. Most those stores are not even accounting for CC Fee’s, Damage Claims, Chargebacks/Fraud, and time spent packaging.
@DannyPhantump
@DannyPhantump 3 жыл бұрын
While I agree with a ton of what you wrote, I still don’t think $5-$10 per booster box on limited product as a viable option for storefronts to survive. I don’t know of many places that currently survive with 10% profit margins. Again, this is my assumption so it’s possible it is wrong. I do agree case discounts are important and should be an option in a normal market. The way I always viewed it is that shipping a case is significantly more cost effective, so that savings would then transfer to the customer.
@DannyPhantump
@DannyPhantump 3 жыл бұрын
I also think it’s interesting that you bring up booster boxes as a bulk item that weren’t typically meant to be sold as boxes, but more so as single packs at an lgs. I honestly never thought of things that way so I was curious as to where you heard that from?
