One of the reasons I'm subscribed to you is because of the way you approach and deal with people; with respect and without judgment. You could have looked at that debtor a lot differently esp with an alcohol ignition lock, but you didn't because you didn't know his story. I think that's the best way, but unfortunately it's also not very common these days (as is any sort of customer service). Have a good one brother, cheers.

Our company approaches debtors the same way Matt does. There is no need for judgment or disrespect. We try to put ourselves in their shoes and that helps us treat them with decency even if they're being irate. A positive and peaceful attitude will often times calm people down when they're angry. Disrespect or a bad attitude will do nothing but fuel the fire. Ultimately it's our job to keep the peace.

If you are an agent executing a repossession you have to listen with no whining. Matt here is an active listener, he informs and listens answering questions and giving information when he can. If it too much for you to tolerate the parameters of a job like this, then it is a good thing you don't work as a recovery agent. It's always possible to be fair and firm.

How can this ever get boring? Every job is different, and requires so much in the way of detective skills just to find sometimes. The stealth factor has got to be fun, too. Thats how these financial scammers work, they sell cars to people who cant afford them, and can't get legitimate credit anywhere else, they sell them the cars way above what they are worth. They know that most will pay them off for a while, that's money in the bank. Then when they inevitably can't pay, they send out the repo so they can then sell the car to another chump.

Designandrew Exactly right. Like that Car Hop place they keep advertising on TV. "Pre-approved! No credit check! All you need is $99!" All those places are out to screw people. They're no different than those rent-to-own places where you end up paying $3,200 for $700 worth of inferior furniture.

A little over the loan amount? So possibly not covering the repo fee. So at best a break even in your case. In the case of that '86 Accord they'd have a hard time selling it to recover the $350 repo fee, let alone any of the loan. He had to not be enough payments in, so they had to recover it. The rent to own places have a formula. If you've paid enough so that they've got they've made a certain amount of profit, then they won't bother with recovering it. They'll report you etc, but they won't bother trying to get the asset.

Title loans are usually done by folks in desperate straits who have bad credit and no other assets besides their vehicle. The finance company makes big profits by charging sky-high interest rates and fees on the loan, plus their risk is minimized by the secured collateral (the vehicle).
