A very beginner runner here. Bought a running belt on your recommendation. It's a lifesaver! Otherwise I was always confined to wear running shorts with big pockets having zippers, which severely restricts the choice. For shoes I found out that if I visit a shop, more often than not the sales rep would try to recommend the most expensive shoes. Doesn't harm watching or reading a few shoe reviews before your visit. Also, bandage/tape/cream/talc to prevent chafing. I sweat a lot, and no matter what outfit I wear, I have to apply either of these to prevent the aftermath. Headphones, and fitness watch (rather than a smartwatch - because of the amount of charging required) also help a lot especially if you run alone. Excellent video as always! Great recommendations.

It’s getting on for winter now so often dark before and after work. A head torch is needed to run safely on trails away from street lights.

Love the video, all great advice.. been running for a few years now and read early on that studies proved music improves performance sort of a "psychological doping" effect, which is why it isn't allowed in competitive events.. as I was improving well at the time I decided I could save the "music" till later on when a Parkrun PB was no longer a regular occurrence!! LOL! Several years later and I've still not got headphones and kind of comfortable without them.. but thinking I might need to take the plunge!

Shorts that can carry a 150-250ml soft flask are a game changer. Also a hat/visor for those of us with glasses to keep the rain off the lens.

I'd say for new runners, a GPS watch isn't really necessary. I tracked my runs with Strava only for quite some time (esp since I carry the phone anyway for podcasts). Also some people don't like to wear watches (or like their looks) in general.

Excellent content, other than fact that the list is missing a female perspective. I have tried to get into running multiple times but could never sustain it because of some basic mistakes I made. I recently started watching your videos along with another channel's and it has made such a difference. I have started running again and I have begun to enjoy it with the help of the tips I have picked from your videos. I agree with the point that the running shoe cushioned is especially important for beginners because most of us that are just starting out are not in particularly great shape and having a rigid shoe is going to put more pressure on the joints. I am personally experiencing that. I walked into a store with no knowledge about running shoes and got whatever was recommended but it absolutely isn't working for me. Your videos have been a great source of information about shoes and it has been eye opening. I also plan to get a better running/multisport watch because the heart rate, pace, distance etc are a sort of validation for me. I can see how I am improving and is definitely a confidence booster.

I have to say my biggest early learning point was not to be tempted to buy really cheap 'running' shoes. I started with some Karrimior shoes that claimed to be running shoes which were OK early on but ended up causing me significant discomfort as I was increasing my miles. Not sure a watch is necessarily required at least not in the early days. Just personal opinion but my goal when starting out I was just focused on increasing my distance which strava on my phone was fine for. A few gears down the line I appreciate my Garmin now that being said but now I am more interested in metrics most begginer runners probably don't think about - vo2 max and HR monitoring etc...

There's definitely a lower threshold you don't want to cross with the shoes. Phone apps are also great when you're starting out for sure. Heart rate is a really useful tool many new runners might not use but could really benefit from. The number of new runners we hear say it's too hard is likely equal to the number of new runners who are running too hard in those early days.

New runners, please don’t buy a new running watch - or any at all! It is an unnecessary expensive investment to achieve your first objective - figuring out if you will love running and wish to keep it up consistently going forward. Free apps on your phone will give you the basic tracking you will need. Spend your money on quality shoes and clothing that fits your environment. If you really want a watch, buy used. But fall in love with running, not your running statistics.

I agree, the 1st thing u really need is to go out there and try running 1st, my situation was i did buy a shoes to start my running journey, the 1st time i woke up early, i ask my self do i really want to start this? Then i start running after 1min i ask my self again bcuz i was catching air the 1st minute 😂 but now i enjoy running. Make it short buy shoes 1st run with it, then push urself thw gears comes later. I still didnt buy anything new just shoes. Tho im still a begginer planning to buy a shorts or tshirt just to add some comfort but got no money hahah

Sports bra. Come on Girls run too. (As I know you obviously know since you have female run testers)Don’t say that’s obvious for beginners because you see plenty of girls obviously not taking this seriously and it’s really bad for you.

I find running watches useless. They are inaccurate. Inconsistently inaccurate. All over the place. Best to just use a wheel and a digital watch.

@@ryanmohan3041 Well, I guess if the majority are running on a straight path in an open area with no trees, buildings, or inclement weather and can accept a 2% margin of error under these ideal conditions, they would disagree. But they won't change my mind. I think they are useless.
