Running Roon and Innuos? YOU MUST WATCH THIS

If you are running Roon and Innuos (possibly other streamers also), please listen carefully and see if the sound is not as good as you remember. Roon updated their software, and we found by accident that our system sounded much worse than before. By updating the Innuos software, everything is now back to normal

Thank you so much! The last Roon-update came when I was experimenting with different speaker positions. Suddenly I was not able to get a well focused voice in the center anymore, neither got I my perfect imaging and soundstage back when I put the speakers back into their old position. I ran quite mad during the last weeks and really doubted myself! Yesterday I stumbled over this video and realised: I missed TWO updates on my Zenith mk3! After updating everything is perfect again. I'm so damn happy!

As an Innuos zen mk3 owner I was shocked when I recently learned that when using Roon (and that’s what I do) I don’t get RAM cached playback. This was a strong selling point of that music server, obviously only in UPNP mode...?! Neither the manufacturer nor a reviewer pointed on that.

First off I don't own a innous server but wanted to comment on how much software changes can make to the sound. Adrian mentioned how the sound can change with updates to the software and I have seen this with other streamers and music servers/streamers as well and sometimes huge differences. One thing with having any computer related part of having a streamer is noise. Unless it's purpose built for audio chances are it will suffer from having a lot of noises from the pc into your system. Another observation is how close the innous system resembles sonore microrendu ethernet/usb streamer when Phil was showing the setup options. And that system was based on old slim devices/logic tech squeezebox steamers from way back in the early to mid 2000s😀

Just out of curiosity, did you try listening to the unspecified horn speakers with an all analog front end? Did the Roon/Innuos problem affect any other speakers in your store? I am an unrepentant physical media kind of guy and don't have to worry about software/firmware upgrades (except for my smartphone and laptop). Glad to hear you are back in business.

Thank you for this. I own an innous so that was valuable. I have a question related to the unit and the IPeng app that is used to play both ripped files and music from places like tidal. I’m wondering why reviewer’s never mention that the master files that title offers cannot be accessed if you’re playing TIDAL through iPeng on you innous? It’s not a big thing because They still play at 44.1 CD level, but it is marketed as a unit that can play MQA, which it can, but only if you’re using Roon-which is another expensive service that one would have to pay for.

Thanks a lot for this important video. I was experimenting with some new active speakers when all of a sudden Roon did not work anymore on my Innuos server. Fortunately after two days the online support of Innuos could help me to install the latest software update, with which also Roon was running again. Nevertheless I still feel, that it does not sound as good as before. Do you have any possible explanation?

Keep holding off buying a streamer (I would buy a Innuos) because of the uncertainty with software on these devices. Will they continue to be supported, what stays and changes after an updated. Went through this with my Sonos. Sticking to buying my favourite music on CD for now.

Whether it's Sense (Innuos) or Roon... It's a software, correct?? Either of them Do NOT "Improve" Sound quality, right?? It's the Qobuz/Tidal... It's the streamer... The USB cable you're using ect that "Improves" the sound. Please let me know and thank you

Nope, it had nothing to do with Roon - they said so themselves. However, perhaps your guy changed some DSP settings? However, out of the box, the sound didn't change. The software of your clients streamer as per your comments is a totally different matter. Cheers.

Why do you guys prefer the innuos over the melco? Many who carry both say the melco rips and sound is much better

Both your advice and your equipment is highly respected. All great stuff. However, it flies in the face of the sound quality of this posting. Your voice has a bass hump. Perhaps it is the microphone (not on par with the other equipment)? Perhaps you are sitting too close to the microphone? Something else? If my speakers (or any associated equipment) introduced that artificial boost in the bass, I would not listen to it. It is puzzling that you are surrounded with dream audio equipment, all striving for neutral, realistic, "you are there" sound quality, and yet your posting sounds like a boom box. Like many trained ears, mine picks up on such coloration immediately. And the bass boost in this recording is severe, and this channel is the last place I would expect to hear it. This is akin to someone reviewing top-of-the-line video equipment, and their video is out of focus. Please consider my comments as constructive criticism. Thank you.
