Solar powered tools with no battery! Some Ryobi and other power tools can run directly off of a solar panel. I run a lot of battery powered tools in my solar workshop. But in stationary applications at a workbench, bypassing the battery and running straight off of a solar panel is an intriguing option. In this video I do a little research on the bench to see if any tools can run straight off a solar panel, and how much power they use. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the video. -DDSolar

so given your tests here the same methods could be applied to running those tools off a regular Lifepo or lead acid battery as well. Nice thanks for posting this video.

@anthonyglaser929 Hi, yes, that should work, depending on the tool... thanks for watching

what u can do for safe is go to a scrap yard or yard sale or maybe home depo they have ewast bins u can find a bad bater there and make adoter so when your use solar plug in the adper and hook it up to ethere a babter bank or solaer panles

Hope to find some dead batteries to make adapters. Shouldn't be a problem and ebay is loaded

Love the dinner you cook im hungry ok 😊😊 can you use more solar pannels to guarantee more stabe power but capped at 50v so early mornings n late evenings or even all night gives some power how can we do that Sir🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤

@user-hw5el1wu8u Hi, I'm glad you like the cooking :) I will try to answer these questions in future videos when I can... more solar panels does increase power stability... but can still use a battery to have stable power at night. Also I have tested supercapacitors to stabilize power output, still working on that. Stay tuned :)

That meter can be powered externally so that it does not reset when the voltage gets low. 3 pins on the side. Center pin is +, Pin furthest from wire is -. Needs at least 4V. JR servo connector should work.

Thank you so much for the Ryobi/solar content. I'm just getting into solar, but the content has been very informative and confirmed some of my assumptions when it comes to solar powering some of my own Ryobi arsenal. Were you ever able to identify the purpose of the two additional pins on the Ryobi 18v batteries? I had assumed that they were for temperature control for the chargers but I haven't found a definitive answer. This is extremely simplified, but what I'm looking to do is wire a buck converter (24v -> 21.5v) directly to the internal positive and negative leads of the BMS of one of my batteries. The wiring will be routed out through the bottom or side of the housing with connectors which would allow for the battery to be plugged into a device while also being charged with solar, effectively also powering a device with solar. I may have to experiment with the idea of directly charging to the BMS itself, but if someone else knows the answer that's always preferred :)

Welcome! glad you found the videos useful :) that sounds like a really cool project. I am sure Ryobi never intended to charge the batteries directly without using their oem charger. But if the charge voltage and current are limited and about 20v - in theory it ought to be fine. And it's on my list of "further research". I suspect the additional connectors are not always used, but sometimes for sensing temperature and in some cases to detect the battery type for certain high power appliances (that's just a theory though).

But what's the point of hooking up solar wires to a cordless battery tool?? Isn't the attraction of the ryobi platform is that it is cordless??? Now your turning a battery system back into a wired tool no??

Flexibility and options. Such as running my 18v soldering iron all day at the workbench on a solar panel outside, and save wear on my batteries. In the future if things get tough and batteries are in short supply, or there is an emergency, I have another option. This channel promotes preparedness and readiness, so direct solar tools fits the theme. The tool itself remains cordless and has not been modified.
