RUNNING THE RABBIT vs PUSHING THE THREAT, COMPARING TWO CORNER FED CQB TACTICS

Running the rabbit has several names and there’s some nuance to the application depending on your mission and environment. This can even have solo CQB applications just based on principle. With a team, it allows for 2 guns oriented to the remaining threat much faster, and forces the opponent to track a moving target.
You may have seen it a different way, or differently named, that’s fine. If you’ve got questions or something to add drop a comment! If you haven’t seen our other videos check those out for more context.

If you’re still not sure about Rabbit, run it with Sims. Not fun being the bad guy. Our team transitioned from digging to running rabbit 5 years ago, never looked back. Give your point man a fighting, moving chance; and give him secondary force on the threat within 1/4 second. Win.

depends on how you utilize it. In a larger hallway, unless transitioning from a corner to some sort of cover in the alternate hallway, running the rabbit is useless. In this example of utilizing the ‘run the rabbit’ method in a corner fed is solid IOT allow for plate coverage for your buddy. However other methods exist which might be more beneficial. For example at the CQB school at IMI in Israel, they teach the “firing squad” method, which is when making entry, into a corner fed, utilizing the door to pie as much possible until forced entry. Once forcing entry, everyone runs the long wall allowing for all individuals (let’s say four for example) to be along the same wall, with all their geometries of fire aimed down the portion of the room which isn’t cleared. This allows four weapons to engage any target in the deep threat which hasn’t been cleared. The placement also allows for the most free form of movement once you’ve received your clears to free up movement.

Rabbit is probably the most used technique because it's fast and dynamic. Once the situation goes loud, it's literally the only option left on the table. SHTF, clear as fast as possible, don't give them an opportunity to arm up. I love how much these techniques have changes since the 80's and 90's when I was in the Army. Plus the gear is SO much better. Great video.

A Green Beret told me one time that never let the room get in the way. Push chairs away with your body as you advance, climb on/over sofas. The goal is to completely dominate that room. Of course it’s up to user’s judgement but I keep in mind to not be afraid to move stuff out of the way you plan on taking. 🤙

My team currently pushes the corner (the sustainment training group also teaches us pushing corner), but we tried the rabbit while at a course with the FBI. We were all very skeptical and still are. The course was force on force the last two days and many including myself still preferred pushing the corner. After this explanation and seeing the time, I'd be open to trying the rabbit again. This is also a debate of the lead dominating the known space versus the unknown. Your stack will be less familiar with the room and has to more rapidly identify and engage. It is also a debate of more optimal for the lead to be a full on shield versus using potential human nature to trail a moving target. Glad you both pointed out merits and detriments. Good discussion.

When training for Iraq we suffered 35% -/+ casualties clearing buildings and the instructor said that was the best he has seen in my battalion and he told us that is really good and I thought to myself this is not good. Losing 3-4 guys per building wasn’t good enough for me. In another exercise in my platoon I was the only casualty due to a weapons malfunction with the blank system we were using I was removed from the exercise but my platoon killed it after me going down. Training is boring for some, but for us it was real and taken like it was real life. I enjoyed it I can’t even explain what I call the “zone” is but it’s a high that nothing in life compares to. I prefer pushing the threat. With a corner fed room point man can always slow down his approach and quasi-pie that room (if the door is open) scan til you hit the threshold and break the corner. If the door is closed I still prefer to take on the unknown than the path of least resistance if I'm point, atleast in a team or two man setting.definitely love your break down of this. Keep up the great work.

I'm absolutely for pushing the threat as well. One man can kill just about everything in that room (fighting from the frame), and then pushing into that unknown threat right inside the door, while two man covers him from dead spaces.

@@chris-zt7eorealistically if you're pieing a door and you engage someone if there's more than one person they're going to immediately start spraying the walls. Look at Ukraine and Gaza for examples of this. You have two options for tactics one that forces you to rush into a room full of bad guys with guns and another where you can back off and fight from another angle. Your choice I guess. I'm not sure why the army is so insistent on running into machine gun fire. Maybe its because they think the grunts need to rely on violence of action alone to win the fight? Not sure.

This concept works better than a traditional two-man entry. 👌🏼 My only critique is as follows; the 2nd man in the room doesn’t need to close or move toward the threat. He should remain linear with the 1st man in the room. Note: if a gunfight ensues, and both operators are not online, there may be an issue. E.g. 2nd man moves right and enters the 1st man’s arc of fire. Great video and presentation, guys. 👍🏼

Third man in stack would generally go opposite #2, and adjust to be more shallow than #1, focusing more on room center and areas a combatant could be using for concealment. What isn't mentioned here is that as each man enters, they have primary and secondary sectors of fire, capturing a visual snapshot on entry and then moving towards a position of dominance, engaging as necessary but then splitting the room and holding on unknowns (doors, windows, obstacles/hiding places). 3 is more shallow/centered than 1, 4 is more shallowed/center than 2.

Not someone with experience or expertise in combat ops, but I do find this pretty interesting that I naturally use the same method with a buddy in a recent video game. In helldivers 2, friendly fire is a feature. Often when its just us two he plays point man, and I cover his back as well as our six. As the second guy when we are clearing corners, He often continues to move or centers himself and I found it most effective to follow him and stay in his backpath.

Very cool. The only thing I would add is to learn how to shoot non dominate. A good gunfighter does not have a weak side. It will always square your plates to the threat and you expose less entering the room. Makes it easier to get through tight spaces. It's a little awkward at first but quickly it will become second nature if you practice. Once you have and don't have to think about it you will rip. Invaluable!

I was introduced to this about 6 or so years ago and personally love it. Studies have shown that the #1 man gets shot 80% of the time when attacking the corner first vs 20% of the time if he runs the wall and lets the #2 man attack the corner. The bad guy will immediately try to track and hit the #1 man (it's really hard to hit a fast moving target in that space and time when the entry is by surprise) giving the #2 guy plenty of time to get multiple hits on target. That said, a lot of teams I work with still refuse to use this technique. Furniture can absolutely change the dynamic to make this ineffective. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't COMPLETELY trust the #2 man!

The main issue ive always had with running the rabbit is it assumes that the rest of the room is definately clear. If you arent confident about that then both of your entrymen are presenting their soft sides to potential targets. Pushing the threat means that everyone has a plate between them and 50% of the potential threat for the entire encounter. Running the rabbit also means that if your lead man goes down you foul the entryway for anyone else, whereas he has usually fallen off-axis if he takes a round 1 second in when you push. that said, im thinking from a commanders perspective (which is my role) were i actually the first man in? you bet your ass i want to be a rabbit!

You're 100% right. Running the rabbit only works in a perfectly square room with 1 threat in the uncleared corner. The problem with guys seeing this video is they start to incorporate this into their SOPs for every corner fed room, which is a recipe for disaster. I've cleared thousands of rooms and probably found the need to use running the rabbit on maybe 5 times. Some thing goes for doing High Low entry.

Exactly!!! Bro, even in situation where u have only one threat in that corner(rest of room clear), that guy is not standing there if he dont know that someone is coming in and having that in mind if he is alone as he probably is, u better be sure that he is going wild and full auto the moment he hear or see anything. So u two are going to kill him for sure but he also have a massive chance to wipe both of u in the same time because he know where u are coming from and u dont know is he standing or lying down or behind some sort of object etc. Running rabbit is not worth a risk at all, especialy when u are not going in solo and u have a much safer aproach, for solo it maybe can be a choice in certain scenarios.

"No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country". General Patton I have advocated for clearing from the outside as much as possible before entry for at least a decade. I really appreciate these videos. "Running the Rabbit" was THE only tactic for entry. Not looking at obstacles on the ground etc. and the foolhardiness of running into rooms to "draw fire". This at least makes sense as you now have a chance to survive an encounter as deadly as this.

Spent a lot of years on one of our teams running CQB. The rabbit makes the assumption there is only a threat in the unseen area. The capacity to see what is in the far left corner behind or under furnature, debris etc is very limited in low light/high stress. We have made entries into places whhere there is so much debris and dirt you couldn't tell what was a human from the objects. Got to dig those corners and trust that my partner is doing his job in his while I cover my side. There is one element missing between the time of the door breach and the entry of the first man that I am reluctant to discuss in this open forum. "SWAT" guys will likely know what I'm talking about that provides additional critical seconds for the entry team.

I concur. Bottom-line up front, ...make it work, without compromising yourself and your team. Be willing to stick to your convictions, only the victor tell his story. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

There is no such thing as “good men” who “do nothing”. Running the “bugs” has its pros and cons, CQB is the single most what if’d skill in the universe, use it when it make sense.

Mr. Flash bang swat man/ Bruce Lee You just earned yourself 4 RIR Reports Failure to protect swat tactics Lack of integrity, risk to officer safety, and Failure to spell furniture, where correctly. You must also study your Radio, Penal codes, and Station numbers along with all spelling words for a re-certification of your P.O.S.T cert.

@@Pitbully23 Lol. Internet police. What is a "RIR" report. Oh, and there is no such thing as a POST certification where I work. If spelling and grammer concern you, run your message through one of the word smithing programs online to see if your air of superiority is warranted.

I love running the rabbit. I’ve been training people on it for 20 years now. With that said it’s all dependent on the point man as to which technique gets used in live action.

It depends on weather they are expecting company, and how stealth you are at and before the moment of entry. If it's likely they know when and where you are coming and you have to enter, run that rabbit

I like sending the first guy down the wall. The perp in the corner will be tracking him and shooting. The second guy turns in (button hook) and takes out the perp who is concentrating on the first guy who is a moving target and harder to hit. If the first guy button hooks in towards the corner he is right where the perp is expecting him to be. He doesn't need to track, only shoot.

Hey guys awesome video, i am curious as to if and how this applies to a door has to be breached or if you would return to a pushing technique without the exterior analysis of the room. Kind of an extension is the example you showed of running the rabbit with the chair in the way, would your solution be to return to a push technique or attempt to defeat the obstacle in some way?

Great technique! I got that one from some SF guys teaching our SF law enforcement unit in Central America a few years ago. I hadn´t seen it ever since. We used to do a thing we called "The Israeli method" for hallways and they came and just erased it from our training. It made sense immediately and it really made a difference. You guys based on Baton Rouge? I´ll be close kinda soon, in NOLA. I wish I could do some training with you. Anyway. Great video

If I can pie off most of the corner fed room externally and dont see any obstructions then running the rabbit is good. The room, obsticles and unknown space dictate movement but as long as there is a barrel first pointing to the unknown, you got surprise, speed, and violence of action.

Not my line of work, and my tactical movement knowledge is SUPER limited from a bit of previous work. So straighten me out if I'm WAY off on this, but conceptually running the rabbit makes more sense to me when taking rapid control of any space you don't have time to pie into on 2 counts: 1. No overlapping incoming target focus. Essentially when you're controlling the corner on entry the first way they showed, anyone inside aiming is now mostly aiming towards the fatal funnel. And everyone else pouring through the funnel is also in focus just by spraying. Whereas running the rabbit directs that target focus AWAY from the funnel, better protecting every other team member who enters AND spreading out the amount of friendlies likely to get splashed with a directed spray. And 2. Like they demonstrated here, theres no friendly blindspot of the pointman engaging a T where the 2nd + have to slide PAST him to also get on target or just take control of the rest of the room. And in my mind running the rabbit always made more sense for efficiency sake, but seeing it highlighted here really brought the curiosity i had about it into focus. I wont evangelize changing training for anyone who i know is still doing that work. But its good to have more tools in the toolbox and nice to see this one getting demonstrated in an effective way

We’d peek the blind spots. A very quick look around the corner to check for threats. The only drawback is the material making up the wall. If it’s Sheetrock, you just shoot through it. Concrete gets the peek … PS: A lot carried little periscopes (Amazon about $8) or use mirrors. Look before you leap out into the FOF …

You know, this is the first time I’ve seen this but it’s also something I’d wondered about. Obviously Rabbit is great if you know a threat needs to be neutralized but if it’s unknown, then it seems like pushing becomes order of the day, possibly to control a person that maybe isn’t a lethal threat.
