I've been running my dog for 6 years. He's a great partner (maybe a little demanding) but what they didn't mention was running with a CamelBak water pack and a collapsible water bowl to give the pup a drink every couple of miles on any runs over 2 miles. Also, dog bags, dog bags, dog bags, nothing ruder than running through a neighborhood and leaving dog bombs in someone's yard :^) Definitely 5am runs during Summers.

@@annaharding1947 Very true and that will give them an alternative to trying to drink out of puddles along the way when it gets hot. Puddles can be good if they're fresh enough but in cities or if they've been stagnant for a couple of days it's best to avoid them.

I let my dog drink directly from the camelbak, as he's a little too fancy to drink good water from the bowl lol. So squirting water is more fun and he actually drinks :))

What a helpful video. As someone desperate for a dog to join me on runs this is great guidance to consider, especially not to just leap in when they're young and have plenty of energy, but to remember they need to have strong bones and training just like us. Also, so nice to see Anna back!

I've run with my 11 1/2 year old bearded collie for years. We used to have my son's 2 Aussies run with us. Yes this old guy ran with 3 dogs attached to him. My dog had pneumonia last year and the vet was surprised he survived. Attributed it to his running.

I’ve been running with my spaniel for over 5 years and we love Canicross. I’ve made so many friends through the sport and discovered loads of new routes with some amazing views. It’s been a fantastic way for me and my dog to bond and I can’t imagine running without her! As well as my belt, her harness and the bungee line, I never run without a running vest with water for us both, a few snacks and a first aid kit. And I always have a fleece in my car to put her into after a run when it’s cold. Got to keep her nice and warm and protect her muscles and joints. In addition to all of the above, I also have my dog see a canine chiro regularly who gives her a muscle massage and checks that everything is moving as it should. I want to be running with her for as long as I can so do everything I can to keep her jn tip top condition. Enjoy the trails!!

Terrific video. I run with my cattle dog. She is a rescue and found running really helps her. She is a worker dog and is in her element when running. I find the first 15 minutes there are lots of stops to sniff but helps me warm up anyways. If we see a squirrel 🐿 she goes crazy but that’s our fartlek time as we chase a squirrel on a fence.

Squirrels are like nitrous for canicrossers, haha. We do use that excitement though, Skye dragged me to a 4:26 mile when she was chasing my mum (on her bike) and once chased a deer that just ran down the path instead of off into the woods - 400m flat out isn't fun on a longer run 😂 I swear that deer did it on purpose.

@dogfit what is your opinion of the ultimate Direction dog pack? I got it for Duke so he could carry water & treats. I don’t see him having any problems while he wears it or after, but I always question whether it’s the right piece of kit for him. We do longer distances up to 16 miles.
@DogFit
@DogFit Жыл бұрын
We haven’t used that piece of kit so can’t comment on it and prefer to wear an hydration vest ourselves to carry water, snacks, etc as anything that adds weight to the dogs body over a period of time could possibly cause the dog to get too warm and we try to keep their bodies free to move without restriction or weight on them.

This is great to hear. Even with a lot of behavioural training input my rescue can still be quite nervous and reactive around other dogs and lockdown was brilliant as we could go for long off lead runs around the countryside with no one else around. There are tactics that I use to keep her calm when we’re walking but I don’t know how that would work if she’s running in front of me and we need to suddenly stop, change direction, deploy treats, etc

So my dog had a small leg fracture in the past. Seriously watch how much you run with them. You can think they will be ok, and able to run and run and run, but really you need to manage it and know when to stop. Some dogs make better runners than others. I don’t do canicross. I just run trails with my dog. No need to over complicate things. With the hills I have near my place it’s usually only me doing the running and dog typically waits impatiently at the top with the look “What is taking you so long ?”. The most import thing imho is to make sure your dog is properly hydrated. My is usually running un-attached and I let her stop by every spring, and if there are none I make sure to make more frequent stops when running myself. My runs with the dogs are literally my best memories…

I love running with my dog(s). Some comments and opinions: 1. My vets have always cleared my dogs for run training at 8 months (GSD size) because bones are fully developed HOWEVER body mass and other structures need a few more months so no running over a mile. It is crucial to train your dog how to act/react while on trail so use that time to get the dog locked into what you expect. 2. I hate running with a dog on a leash or lead. Dogs have trouble keeping a constant pace with you. It’s unnatural for them. Canid’s hunt in packs where variable pacing is normal and extends their chase distance capability. My current dog can run twice as far when she can do variable speeds to my constant pace. 3. About heat, I’m so glad they emphasized this. One additional item, concrete and asphalt can get really hot. I forgot this once and ended up carry my 35kg dog 2 miles back to the car. If I were a crier, I would’ve been balling. She loved me so much that she acted like nothing was wrong until she simply couldn’t take it no more. 4. Not all dogs can do this. This is nothing to do breeds. Some dogs just won’t be able to (temperament, desire, etc). Start with some training and tests before investing in the gear. 5. Be prepared to alter your plan. Make a habit of checking your dog. Just because you can train at a half marathon distance that day doesn’t mean they are up for it that day. 6. Ticks. Always check for ticks. Even if they have the medication, they can still bring them home to your spouse or children . Guess how I know. I thought I was good at checking for them, I’m better at it now but I’m sure I can improve. 7. Train, train, train. Your dog will be like a dance partner. You need to know how to move together particularly if you are tied together. If your dog is not doing that right thing on the trail, it’s your fault, not the dog’s.

I’ve been running with my dogs for the last 20-odd years… it feels odd to be out without them! A word on kit, there are some specialist canicross or bikejoring (biking instead of running ) stores that can give good advice on fitting your dog. The belts you wear come with leg loops to stop them riding up but I found they rubbed me raw and had to cut the loops off.

Great video!! My 95 lb GSD is only good for cool weather runs under 2 miles, so I'm planning on getting either an Aussie or a border collie to run in the mountains with. The nice thing about Canicross is that your dog is on a lead at all times. This will hopefully help from the hearding! Voice commands help to and with practice and encouragement sure your collie will understand what you would like him to do.

@@DogFit Actually (and I know this will probably make you cringe 😉 ) I run on trails mostly OFF leash. They're quite technical, and the chances of taking a digger are too great. (And, running offleash with a very well trained dog is a total joy.) My concern with the herding is at home; I don't want my pup constantly running the fence line, snapping at whoever gets too close!

Just make sure your leash isn’t way too long and you’re not blocking the route for others. I’ve seen it far too many times. As cute as it is, I really don’t want to have to stop or get a nasty look when I say excuse me because you decide you want the whole path!

When I had to travel my husband had my well trained mini schnauzer. He was allowed any behavior. It has taken me quite a while to undo his peeing on everything etc.-it’s hard to get a good uninterrupted run in. He gets stops but not at certain places. Me being in charge is big because he can desire dominance. I don’t know if it’s the same with other buddies but having a united front on discipline helps.

The Eurohound is the breed that many at the top of the sport run with but my girl is a great runner and she is a rescue from Spain. You will be surprised at how many different breeds can run if they are kitted out correctly and helped to understand the "job" they will be doing. In the social side of the sport it really is a matter of most breeds CAN take part then you just build up your training together.

How do I know what's the right pace to be running with my dog? For example if I want to do a run at conversation pace, how could I know what is the conversation pace for my dog? I don't want my dog to run intensely too frequently, because it could lead to overtraining and injury.
@DogFit

They normally pace out in front of you and will certainly let you know their pace before your legs can catch up!! The speed of your dog can be adjusted through training the use of the Canicross commands (which we cover in the DogFit KZfaq channel). Once you've trained the commands and built up their endurance gradually it would be a great idea to get them pack running to see how they run with others...in our honest opinion, it's usually the humans that are the weakest link in the team 😂😂

@@DogFit That's great to hear. I'm definitely going to check out your channel. Do you think for example that someone like Kipchoge could implement runs with his dog without being limited by his dog endurance (after some initial time of training)? Do dogs have such a greater endurance running potential that a dog could be more capable than top level distance runners? How fast do you think for instance an average healthy Belgian shepherd in its prime after some years of training could run a 5k?

Myself been running 3 times a week, 1h max session with 1-2 days recover between running days wonder if its enough? but yes ofc now that I took him with me I did shorter runs and building his stamina first! we do intervals

I live in a city with asphalt roads and all the recreational paths are also asphalt. Is canicross and running with my dog for greater lengths than a couple of miles a non-starter for the sake of his health, given the surfaces he is running on? (He's a 6yo Brittany Spaniel with tons of energy and we've run together before)

We'd suggest not running any distance with dogs on roads or asphalt paths as it can impact their joints. Canicross is the sport of trail running with your dog therefore trails are where we are all happiest.

Running with my pittie mix Gus is an interval workout - 30 seconds of full-bore sprinting, then stop to sniff and pee on something. (The dog, that is, not me. Okay, occasionally me....) Rinse and repeat. He's definitely not a distance guy - after about a mile, he gets tired and swerves in front of me to slow me down.

I'm curious what folks think about running with your dog and having them wear some form of jacket? Some dog breeds are not built for the cold (e.g. greyhound), so as the weather gets colder, they might start struggling. If your dog needs a jacket for the temp is it better to just not run with them?

I have a Weimaraner, and I really hate to run with him using that running belt and that bungee... It's just because he is too strong and too fast, and then it's hard for me to control him. Especially in first 2-3 km. He usually runs freely - not on a leash, but sometimes e.g. in a park he has a collar and a harness and a regular leash. It's way easier to control him. PS possibly in UK this is not a problem but in southern countries e.g. Italy or Croatia dogs should avoid walking on the sidewalks or asphalt. It's just too hot for them.

I started running and get my dog with me but i don’t l ow how to do it with a leash since she’s always stopping all the time to pee or sniff around. I feel she’d just be stressed by the leash… any recommendations? I feel that she won’t be running in front but just be stressed being pulled by the leash while I’m running. I’d both like to respect her rhythm and try and make her steady run like me instead of walking, stoping, running, walking fast, stopping, pooping, running, sniffing, walking etc… all the time. I mean she’s definitely happy, I can see she ain’t in any struggle, but I don’t know how to do leash wise… si for now I don’t use any. Is it a mistake?

You should start walking the first 10mins for warm up, by then they are stimulated enought to pee and poop after that i keep mine of the grass and go for light jog which is soeed walking for the dog. You are incharge of your dog if you think “anxious” the dog know you are anxious because you dont want them to be anxious. Dont let the dog sniff everything other wise youll be stuck on the same spot and will creat a habit the he she is okey to sniff all the time. Have small treats the re enforce good behavior. Talk you your dog they will be connected to you! Trust the process dont give up
@enilizsantiago2317
@enilizsantiago2317 5 ай бұрын
Its okey to pull the leash, when he she is sniffing and you pull them to you, walk a couple feet and give them a treat, have a key word like “here” or “get on your lane” “stop” “leave it” keep your leash short. Treats treats dont forget. Hope this help! You are providing rules and structure on your dog and eventually you become more lenient when they learn.
