Ancient Siris was located here since the years of Herodotus. A rich and powerful city, which experienced prosperity but also witnessed many disasters. But it survived! The modern city, with a slightly changed name and it lies 70 km from Thessaloniki. It is the second largest city in Macedonia
The city is built under the Acropolis called Koulas. The view from above is panoramic. The whole city at your feet! Take a tour of the ruins of the Byzantine castle and the Tower of Orestes, the picturesque church of Agios Nikolaos, the forest park and then for coffee or food at Cityzen, which at Christmas is decorated and takes you to a fairytale setting.
The valley of Agioi Anargyroi. Favorite place of the locals for walking and sports.
Due to the wars, Serres was set on fire, with the result that the current city is newly built with few old buildings surviving. Nevertheless, countless corners of the city will excite you, such as Freedom Square with Bezesteni, the old market that now houses the Archaeological Museum of the city, the town hall, the beautiful sidewalks full of people and life, the neoclassical buildings, but also the neat cafes and taverns. Here in Serres, despite the problems and difficulties of life, people know how to live and not give up. Try the famous Akanes made by the Roubos family. Secret recipe based on buffalo butter. A type of gourmet candy delight. Then the famous Serres bougatsa! A pie made with cream or cheese
Stroll in the streets of the city and light a candle in its churches. Agios Georgios the Kryoneritis, the old Diocese, the Metropolitan Church of Taxiarches stand out.
The ecclesiastical museum and museum of Sarakatsani are worth your visit, while the mosques of the city testify to its Ottoman past.
Just outside the town lies Serres Circuit, the largest in Greece Formula 3 level.
Attractions in Serres
Amphipolis, a majestic ancient Macedonian city at the mouth of the river Strymon. Is Alexander the Great buried here? The recent archaeological discovery of the Kastas tomb shocked the public worldwide. Sphinxes and Caryatids, hidden burial chambers, mystery, disasters and ornate mosaics. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the discovery of the Lion of Amphipolis, a majestic statue, testified that something important, of royal size, existed in the area. Perhaps the fact that the lion has no tongue suggests that we may never know the real truth…
At the Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis you can see a wealth of exhibits and soon the Macedonian Tomb on Kasta Hill will be open to the public.
Lake Kerkini. One of the most important wetlands in Europe. Rare migratory birds, buffaloes and rich nature create a unique experience for the visitor. Boating, pelican and flamingo watching, cycling and 4x4 off roading rides are just some of the options available.
In the villages around the lake you will experience the authenticity of the Serres land and culture. Picturesque Guesthouses, taverns with fresh meat and vegetables, specialties like Buffalo in the hull

Lithotopos next to the dam of the lake. Unique view and fresh fish from the Lake, a cinematic landscape that was the setting of Theodoros Angelopoulos Trilogy: the weeping meadow.
East of Serres, in the gorge of the river Angitis is the cave of Alistrati. Impressive Stalactites of 15 meters in a variety of colors and formations. A wonder of nature with galleries of 3 km and unexplored chambers.
Lailia Ski Center.
The Monastery of Timios Prodromos of Serres was built in 1270 and is a monument of astonishing beauty of Byzantine art
Sidirokastro offers an authentic Macedonian environment, the ruins of a castle built by Emperor Basil II, the beautiful monastery of Agios Kirikos and Iouliti and the famous Baths of Sidirokastro with many people visiting them for treatment or rejuvenation. Nearby, the Zesta Nera cave and hot springs.
A stone's throw from the Greek-Bulgarian border is Agistro, which also has hot springs. A wonderful refreshing trip that combines good food, pleasant accommodation and treatment!
