1980’s NYC was tough as hell. RuPaul had some serious cajones to go out in such an outrageous, fabulous outfit. No riding the subway in full geish unless you were prepared for anything. I’ve heard she carried a baseball bat with her, which makes sense, though it’s hard to square with the utterly charming person she clearly was, saying hello to everyone and being genuinely friendly. Southern charm and charisma for days.

@SweetAngelBoy7777
@SweetAngelBoy7777 9 ай бұрын
Well, you cannot really compare celebrities of that particular era and the celebrities of now. Back then it was a special time because the world weren't so obsessed about the celebrity 24/7. Back then it was special and people had humble beginnings because it was raw talent, and you had to have that to become a full on superstar. But nowadays you don't even need to have that raw talent to attract attention which is why fame is so easily attainable these days and it's also the main reason as to why most of those 15 minute of fame "stars" burn out so quickly and go to rehab or overdose and die young!!!!

Damn when i think about how many times i went to that club and how chill it was back in the days, i really pitty the kids today. Back then we didn't have to be rich, or have a social account or look like we could make the cover of vogue. We just threw some clothes on and we went out, being just our wonderfully fabulous selves. It was about brain and creativity and about self expression. SELF EXPRESSION, a word that none of the kids today know the meaning of in an era when people take pride now in FOLLOWING others. We were proactive kids, while kids today are dreadfully reactive. I am now a father and i always tell my kids not to follow anyone (whether it is on social media or anywhere else) and to always be proactive and never reactive. And to cultivate their own personality, not duplicate someone else's to gain social recognition or acceptance. Screw acceptance and popularity, all of the greatest persons in history where unpopular among their pairs and caused controversy. Nobody who just went with the flow and tried not to make waves ever achieved anything even remotely significant. It is all about saying NO i will not be what society wants me to be, and refuse to compromise for anything, chopping away part of your SELF in order to fit in. If the mold doesn't fit, then this means you are too good for it. My kids teacher said on a meeting once that my kids didn't really fit in. I thanked her and told her than i was probably doing my job right as a parent. I would start to question my skills as a parent if a teacher told me that my kids were exemplary ones because then it would mean i completely screwed up their education. My husband (yes we are men) was even more shocked that the teacher would expect kids to fit in rather than kids to develop their own personality and bloom as the human beings they were supposed to be. He thought that teachers were supposed to help kids grow into themselves and support them by just pointing them in the right direction, and he of course told her so. She didn't quite understand what he meant and just answered that her job was to teach a program. This was it for us. we said thank you very much, apologized for having to leave the r reunion early as we had further engagement and left. The very next day we made an appointment with the school's den and went to it, me dressed like a 1940s dandy and my husband dressed as Mae west, and we removed the kids from the school, and said that if all the teachers did was to teach a program, then we could either do it ourselves or hire someone we picked up ourselves to do it at home. I'm a vet and ethologist, he is an MD, together we have 5 PhD, we are not exactly the most unqualified people on the planet to teach kids and we will not just blindly follow a stupid program. Especially when the school tuition (all kids together) is high enough to hire 20 full time private teachers. The kids are now in a remarkable school where they are taught a program and also taught to be themselves. If you are a parent or a kid and your teacher or kids teacher expect you or your kids to fit in, change school, and report the teacher. Unless of course you want your kids to fit in, in which case, ....................good luck. I remember seeing Ru countless times back in the days, and though i was impressed by his beauty, given the opportunity to chat with him, i was always more impressed by his personality, he was truly genuinely kind and very very bright. I am absolutely not surprised to see where he is today. It was long overdue. He just refused to fit in any mold and made the world accept him, and by extension, many of us too. He would make such a wonderful parent.

We would go to the arcade on 42 and see double features - I saw The last Dragon with my older cousins and it was just so fabulous being out in the city and feeling that atmosphere. So much mystery and mystique and excitement in these videos. You actually had to talk to people to get to know them, nothing was immediately accessible! I know these times had their problems too but dang the nightlife looks so exciting compared to now

Oh wow. This was probably recorded on a camcorder back in the days of VHS! I was in high school. But the quality here is pretty damn good considering it’s age

Amazing archival footage. The '80s looked so much better…people actually socializing instead of standing around staring at their phones.

I've loved Ru since the first time I saw "Supermodel". I was about 10 yrs old and thought to myself "Omg, who is this, she's spectacular!" (All the time knowing its a Drag Queen). She was one of the reasons i fell in love with the Gay (LGBT) community. Til this day, i find her so inspiring! ♡♡♡
