RuPaul is definitely an icon. I remember when I first saw him on MTV in the 90's and was in awe. As a gay boy it was a watershed moment, when I realized that it was ok to be gay. I would see him on stage and see the fans that were tolerant and accepting, and I knew no matter what, there is always a place for everyone in this world. Despite what homophobes say.

Justin Hopkins i felt the same way the first time i saw David Bowie in the early seventies (although he only technically described himself as bisexual). i remember thinking at the time "i'm not the only one who's different" and as for Ru Paul i think he's an amazing gay, drag or trans role model

+Justin Hopkins I just think it's so sad that there's ever been a moment in any gay boy or lesbian girl's life where they thought it was wrong to be who they are. :( I am so happy for you and everyone else like you that RuPaul and other gay & lesbian icons exist and there are people out there that are fighting the good fight, to make it known that it's okay and perfectly normal and should never be a problem for anyone to live their lives and be [and stay] true to who they are.

Ashley Nihil Thanks for your support and kind words. If only the world was like you. The LGBT community in the U.S. Has suffered , but I think of the people in the Middle East who are routinely beaten and executed. That truly breaks my heart.

In Rupaul's book,"Lettin' It All Hang Out" he wrote that when he lived in L.A. with his sister he was unemployed and hung around the Beverly Center all day to pass the time because he was depressed and suicidal, he has earned every bot of his success and he's a living legend. Wendy Williams being gay friendly on daytime tv shows that the times have changed. Ru is an incredible guest. The host hardly has to do any work. Any general prompt question or topic and he can do a monologue off the cuff - and it will be funny, insightful, or both.

+Flenif2247 Sure, I'm aware of open relationships, plus I've heard Ru talk about his open relationship in other interviews. I'm saying this sounds specifically like he's not in a relationship: "I'm not in the romantic sense." In other interviews he gushes over George and the love they share (and thus their ability to not impose boundaries on each other). Like I said, just being nosy/gossipy, not unaware of progressive sexual politics.

glad i'm not the only one who picked up on that. odd that he didn't bring up george. maybe they broke up for a while. in the bethany interview, he said they only see each other about once every 2 months and they don't live together. interesting how they make it work for 19 years even with the open relationship.

From girly looking straight men to butch women that looks more masculine than me :-) Not saying that Wendy is a petite barbie doll, but I still think that she looks more like a woman than Rupaul. In my personal opinion the awesomeness about RuPaul is having seduced media's attention in such a positive way at a harder time in terms of toleration of transgenderism (can I say that?) to make almost everyone seeing it not only as a way of living your life but also as an artistic expression which is neither a harmful nor an offensive reality. Hands up for that.

I once made a cassette tape of songs for Ru -- A Dionne Warwick Album he couldn't find that I had. I also introduced him to Aretha Sings the Blues --- we went to dinner with the late Sami McKinney to Geoffreys on PCH in Malibu!!! Very gracious..happy you're doing so well, Ru --!!!

So yearrrrs ago, early 2000s...one of my friends worked at MTV... she said she knew Rupaul and he was having some little get together at his house... We went to RUPAUL's HOUSE :) :) :) I was expecting him in complete drag as I'd always seen him but he opened the door looking like how he looks on Wendy's show. I'd never seen him not in drag. His house was in the Hollywood Hills... It was nice, pics of celebs all around his home...I remember the pic of him and the Cat Lady...she looked horrible, he, per usual, was GlamMother Honey... LOL... the house was somewhat small... wasn't really large like you'd expect... He was very nice and it was awesome being there and meeting him.
