I find it brave for anyone who shares their poetry out loud. The world is so full of judgement, lining up to bash the artist without thinking twice. Poetry is word therapy for some. It’s the deepest part of someone soul.

@@tychopanda what scribbles? I didn't say scribbles. Putting words in people's mouth is disrespectful. If I wanted to call them sketches or prose sketches I can. I don't have to give her work positive feedback. Stop trying to find a way to shut up all people who give her work negative feesback, and stop trying to character assisinate cause they do, it just shows narcissism. In a workshop people can give literary work negative feedback. If you attacked people cause they did you would be asked to leave. Now move on and accept that is how it is in the art world. I am reporting your post cause it was character assisination which is still harassment.

I randomly ran into this book at the library, I opened it and started reading. I must say that while I was reading, it didn't feel like a poetry book (I actually didn't know it was regarded as a poetry book in the first place), but rather like a book of sentences that tell stories and feelings, and I actually liked it like that. It's not poetry but I don't think it's bad.

The utter simplicity of the topics and language that she uses in her book is what got her famous. It's accessible and makes people feel like they're intellectually advanced when they're actually just reading a series of tweets. The main audience that enjoys her book are high school students because of how simple the book is, while also managing to make people feel as though they're somehow profound for understanding it. It's an excuse for people to read something that they can finish in under half an hour, and it gives them a feeling of intellectual superiority, without actually having to stimulate their mind.

When I read Milk and Honey for the first time, I felt a strong connection to the words and the emotions emitted by them. While I will admit that I hold no doctorate’s in literature, I have been reading and writing poetry since I was a little girl. In my opinion, the beauty of a poem is in the eyes of the beholder. If it has the ability to inspire, connect, or comfort you through its meaning, then it should be cherished. Rupi’s work had a truly lasting impact on me.

I personally don't vibe with her style of poetry but that doesn't mean her poetry is bad or it's not a poem. Poetry is art, and art is a very abstract term, so even if you don't like her style of poetry, please don't be disrespectful. *edit after 9 months, can't believe i was this nice back then:* although I don't want this to happen, ya'll do realise that whenever new artfroms emerge there's always a conflict because of how different it is from its predecessors , but those art forms still thrive. you don't like her stuff, cool! go on with your life- make your own poetry book maybe but gatekeeping and cancel culture along with this pretentious attitude to dismiss anyone who don't conform to your ideas is trash. personally, I hate her poetry but you won't see me hating on her, coz that's not worth my time sis. also maybe separate the art from the artist in such cases? if a bunch of 14-year-olds resonated with this and made her book bestselling, so be it. it's not like people are asking you to read it or asking all literature from now on to be like hers, jeez. Edit: lmaoo "a bunch of 14yos" I was 16 when I wrote this

So if I throw random paint on a canvas, you'd call that art? Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic writing, that attempts to stir a reader's imagination or emotions. The poet does this by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. Can you honestly say that she does this? Just seems like words strung together on random lines. That doesn't make it poetry.
@Madeeha_shinkoko
@Madeeha_shinkoko 4 жыл бұрын
@@lydjoy3385 it does seem like so to me. But like I said, art is abstract. If a few people like what she's writing and vibe with it then be it. And yes some paint carelessly that was thrown on the canvas is considered art. its called _Modern art._ The brain is a wierd thing and how one interprets something and what they bconnect it with depends of them and their experiences Believe it or not, some people say they don't like the renaissance paintings. To me, that's the revival of the most amazing and detailed work of art yet some people dislike it. because they're not me. they seem to connect with something a little different, and that's muthafukin okay

Yes that's exactly what it means. For example, if I paint although I am extremely untalented that still doesn't make me Picasso. It just doesn't. Let's just accept what we can and what we can't do. We cannot all be writers, painters, doctors, models, etc. We all have our different callings.

When you put out any art you've created, you face criticism from people who think they can do better. I'm proud of Rupi for taking the risk of putting out something she loves and giving it to everyone. Everyone is bound to have different opinions, but the truth is, if you're sitting at home commenting hate on this video about how Rupi's poems are "overrated and shallow," then you need to find something better to do. Spread love.

her poetry is extremely devoid of any deeper meanings, metaphors etc. her poetry is literally just simple sentences that everyone can relate to, served along with an "aesthetic" sketch of some naked woman with a flower, mainly catered to 15 yr old emotional tumblr girls who don't know the first thing about poetry. it's literally just "he touched me and i came apart" or some other basic BS that everyone could do.

@Jaskiran I disagree. Like others have stated most people dont want to read some long shpill with fancy words they dont understand. Rupi can tell a beautiful story that is understood by even a non native english speaking person in some foreign country such as myself. If you read milk and honey its def something that takes talent to write. From the loving to the breaking. All chapters flow together really well. How she speaks about when her man leaves her. He finds a new girl but will never love as much. I think is simple to understand yet moving. Winning concept. "The woman who comes after me will be a bootleg version of who I am. She will try to write poems for you to erase the ones I've left memorised. But her lines could never punch you in the stomach the way mine did. When she is tired of falling apart for a man that doesnt give back what he takes She will recognise me in your eyelids staring at her with pity and it will hit her. How can she love a man who is busy loving someone he can never get his hands on again. The next time you have your coffe black You will taste the bitter state he left you in. It will make you weep. But you will never stop drinking. You'd rather have the darkest parts of him than have nothing.

I think there is a deeper stereotype prevalent in society about poetry. Since it is the oldest form of art, people don't like seeing a lot of change in it. Revamps are despised as you can see from the countless ages of poetry where polarising poets have tried to break free of the conventions that hold us back. But the main point is, it is art. It's abstract. Unique. Unquantifiable to an extent or rather personally and individually quantifiable. As a fellow poet, I think what matters is that you write. Your soul is special and there's no one like you. Poetry is like your soul, there is no other poetry like yours. Being brilliant or not is something that you leave up to the masses, carry forward with your own philosophy of expression and you will find amazing things in yourself and surrounding you.

Because if everything is tagged as poetry what is not poetry? Poetry should use the beauty of the language it is written in. To use methods that literature makes available to the writer (metaphors, puns...) in order to convey a message that makes you think and feel. What she writes are statements. If I put her text in a prose book will you know where her "poetry" starts and the prose starts? There must be some guide lines even if you don't want to fallow them.
@eduardmanecuta5350
@eduardmanecuta5350 2 ай бұрын
You can express yourself in prose just as well as in poetry. Where is the difference between the two? Heck, you can do it in dance as well or painting. You see where I'm going with this? There must be some guidelines. Tossing words on papaer don't make you a poet/poetess. Molière said that if you write like you speak that is not poetry. Just because you feel something don't make it poetry. I can insult you and make you furious, that don't make an artist or a poet. Some write incoherent stuff/"abstract" to hide their lack of depth or because they think that makes their text deep.

Just because your expressing yourself through words and it's felt by others doesn't make it poetry, it just makes you human. If I told you my friend died when I was 15 does that suddenly make it poetry? Or does it just simply mean I expressed myself using words and you were saddened by it. If a tree expresses its tired trunk by falling and the sound makes me scared does that make it music? Music is a frequency or sound expressing itself and so is a tree falling. And they both made me feel something. This example completely dismantles the idea that just because someone is expressing them self and it's felt by others, that they can call it an art form in this case poetry because if that's what were doing even a tree can create art. Key word in that sentence being create. Art is not simply expression, one person said it and all the lazy people ran with it lol. Art is creative expression or creative Artistic Expression. "That raises the question" what does creative mean?simply put "creative" means expressing your imagination through whatever art form. Which is why we have the arts, music, poetry, acting, dance, painting, etc. None of these art forms require just expressing. "Expressing" is only one component. There for you can't call something something it's not just because your expressing. They require creative thinking, and or imagination, original thought, practice, energy, time, etc to be good or great at. To say a simple sentence is poetry when in fact it's not shows you, whoever you are, have no respect or admiration for real life genuine authentic poets such as Charles bukowski, egar Allen poe, maya Angelo, Rumi, etc. (I'm bad with names lol) but these are people who love the craft of poetry and when you love something you respect it. These people with this expressing notion are either lazy or just don't care at all which is worst. Anyway I encourage you all to check out a few of those great poets. Thank you for reading. 🖤🐺

No hate towards her, but personally I didn’t really find her poems as great as everyone else did. They did have some powerful lines embedded throughout but a lot of them somewhat looked like something my 14 year old self would write. That being said, I did enjoy her illustrations and some of her poems. It just didn’t have that factor of attempting to interpret lines/stanzas.

Journaling and poetry have been one of my outlets for years. So when i heard about about this book I was so excited yet disappointed in the style but instead of disregarding her book I decided to relate and use her work and transform it into my own outlet: aka once I found a poem I related too I would write about my own or vent. It would be like a prompt or her poems would be a title for me. It ended up helping me get through a lot and I was able to just drown my self in this book and my writing. I got through such a dark time in my life. So thank you Rupi.

yes, I did recommend a real feminist poet. Someone who's actually lived oppression, being attacked for her sexuality in an era where women were seen as nothing but baby makers and house cleaners. Rupi is a rich girl from Toronto who fell into this because people are stupid. Jeff Brown, don't you even see what you just did there? I didn't tear down a woman. I tore down a bad writer. You can't use feminism as a bully club for whenever you take something personal. That's called totalitarianism. Essentially meaning that you, Jeff Brown, believe that I must applaud and cherish all female poets, simply because they are female, and if I do not, you will call me a bigot. You don't even realize that you are a mini Joseph Stalin. You fucking idiot.

sorry brother, I am just proud for my people and the example they're setting , I didn't mean to offend you. SIkhi isn't just a religion. It's a brotherhood that encompasses both spiritual and political aspects. It arose to defend Mother India against oppressors like Muslim Mugols from looting and conquering India. It also showed people the beauty of their own religions and it acted to unify all people regardless of caste, creed, religion. Additionally, Sikhi brought into the world a way of life that encompassed both worldly affairs and spirituality. I'm sorry once again if I offended you, thanks.

This is the comments section. And I am going to write my opinion, because I am free to. In my view, Poetry is either something that uses extraordinary imagery that makes us see the ordinary in a new light OR uses ordinary, colloquial words and phrases to make us feel something extraordinary. Using a bunch of run-of-the-mill lines randomly injected with breaks would still have been alright if they'd made me feel something. But they don't. And so, in my opinion, what Rupi Kaur does could be an attempt at Poetry, but not Poetry in itself. I am not going to judge the people who like her works though. That's their opinion, this is mine.

@@MrThatGuyYouForgot I clearly remember stating that it's my personal opinion. When I say, poetry is such and such a thing to me, it is what it is to me. Not what it should be. Certainly not what it should be. And I strongly feel, Art is subjective, just like beauty. Nobody can really dictate how art should be or work. If you find her works poetic, that's great by all means. It's just not poetic to me.
@ladybird491

I already gave constructive criticism as to why it is not poetry. Where is your constructive criticism showing why it is? oh yeah it is "I like it, so I will believe it is" Plenty of writing creates emotions and make readers fel things, it doesn't make it the genre that someone say it is, especially those who aren't educated in it. I will repeat myself. I said I don't have to like it or agree with you or say it is poetry. It is not poetry, Poetry shows, prose tells. Trying to change the very foundation of writing genres, is just tacky and tasteless. I guess I should call stephen kings work poetry sense it makes me feel things and reminds me of some feelings I had growing up. LOL
@MrThatGuyYouForgot

Amrita Basu We can't have personal definitions of what poetry is. We have to have a standard one. Otherwise, the word is meaningless. The only reason you can understand what I'm writing is because all the words I'm using have agreed upon definitions. If just made up my own definitions for words and used them then you would not understand me. If something is poetry to one person and not poetry to another then the word poetry is meaningless (as what you mean when you say "poetry" could literally be anything). If you said "I like poetry" but everyone had their own definitions of the word; I would not know what you like. Therefore, you can't have your own personal definition of what poetry is. You can have your own taste such as "I do not like this poetry" but you do not get to have your own definition for what poetry is. I am saying that your definition is not a good definition. You can say you don't like it for sure. You'll need a better definition to say it's not poetry.

I understand what you're trying to say, but in the end, I disagree. It's so shallow as to be the equivalent (or less, frankly) of someone saying "everything happens for a reason" when a loved one dies suddenly. Cliches and platitudes are damaging to our humanity. It's also so self-focussed I find it hard to categorize it as empathetic.
