"RURAL ELECTRIFICATION IN OHIO features three films commissioned by Rural Electrification Administration for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and created by legendary filmmakers Pare Lorentz and Joris Ivens. The landmark 1940 documentary Power and the Land tells the story of the Parkinson family, farmers in rural Ohio who electrified their farm with the help of a REA loan. Before electrification, work was done in old-fashioned, manual-labor intensive ways-water was carried by hand from the outdoor pump, and carts and plows were driven by horses. The documentary helped raise significant awareness about the lack of electricity in rural America. This program also features two related 1941 shorts films about the Parkinsons: Bip Goes To Town and Worst of Farm Disasters. "

Americans today have no idea how good we have it, (mostly.) I’ll never complain about the power going out in a storm because I know it will come back on

That oil lamp at 16:03 is a very unique style. It was made by The Aladdin Lamp Co. Not only could it give off as much light as a 40 watt bulb (yeah, 40 watts was a big deal then)....it gave off heat as well. These lamps are still made today and the old ones are considered not only still useful but quite collectible. There are a lot of them on Ebay.

@@carryclass6807 I have 2 of those lamps for emergency lighting as I live in the North East USA.....lots of snow, possible hurricanes and power loss too sometimes. They actually still make them brand new. Their only drawback is you have to use their brand oil in them and since they burn so hot and bright you burn more oil. I'll bet the one pictured is now worth about $400. "in perfect cosmetic and working condition.

Back when people were civil, worked together and debated, and came to a compromise. That's how you come up with solutions for the better. Think of how much better America would be now, if it were like that in Washington D.C.
