This week, we take a look at rural France and its development through the ages. Like in many other European nations, France saw a massive exodus towards its urban centres during the 19th and 20th centuries - a demographic shift that has had long-lasting effects. But the shift has also left rural France with several issues to deal with, such as education and technology, pushing many of these areas to now go on a charm offensive to try to attract the country’s so-called "neo-rural" population.

Rural France looks VERY attractive to me. Imagine having access to everything France has to offer + a quiet corner of a picturesque medieval village. Telecommunications is key.

@@hirondelle8734 I'm on the waiting list for Starlink (SpaceX) and got an email recently inviting me to join up as a Beta tester. The monthly price for the service made me reconsider. It's double the cost of what I'm paying now and there is no guarantee of performance. Starlink sends you a small satellite dish with a receiver and a power supply by mail or courier. You probably will be asked to fill out a weekly or monthly questionnaire. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I was pining for French rural life. But then I realized that I lived in western Massachusetts for four years and it resembles the German countryside quite well. I've never been to Vermont, but I'd imagine it's even more beautiful than western Massachusetts, with huge amounts of forests, the darling villages, the rustic covered bridges. So I already have beautiful countryside only 3 hours away from where I live. And no passports, visas, immigration and new language rigmarole to deal with. So...time to move to rural Vermont! :D

I also live in western , Massachusetts and I do love it but you should definitely visit France. Coincidently, I just booked a month's stay in a little town in estern France called Ozenay . I have been to Vermont and New Hampshire, Main and stayed many times in those areas and I can tell you there is a great difference from them and Europe. I have been to France as well as most of the other European countries and they all have so much to experience. Life is short , go travel it will change your life.

That was an interesting story. It needs updating in the age of Covid19. I imagine more people have moved to the countryside to have more space to breathe. Those villages don't look as deprived as some areas in Spain. Spain has thousands of abandoned villages, no services of any kind nearby. But, it is a lot cheaper than living in France.

Glad to see the country doing something specific to tackle the growing trend of leaving the countryside and moving to the city for jobs. Having a healthy countryside, including small towns and farms is very important for the overall health of the France in general. Plus, I do believe it is the government's responsibility to invest in its own people by providing some opportunity for them to then come up with their own ideas and way to survive. And this opportunity is solid and quick internet access to as many disparate regions as possible.

Maybe in Mexico the population is less splitted, in France there is a village every few kilometers, or maybe the French find it unacceptable that a few thousand people out of a population of millions of inhabitants don't have an internet connection and journalists are more keen to show it in the news unlike other countries. Actually, if you look after some info, you realise that Spain and France are the leading nation of Europe in term oh High Speed Network. They bring cash to buy houses, move savings into local banks, buy food and love movies, theater etc.. spend a lot of money for health care and bring a wealth of knowledge which can be used for volunteer work. What they look for are low taxes, fair food prices, safe, friendly inviting environment. We make economic zones for businesses to lower their cost, why not do the same for retirees.

LOL at the amount of people carrying baguettes in this video. The meme is real. I actually find this video extremely positive for the future of France. Cheap farm land and entire communities of native Europeans. Home schooling children is legal in France too so why send them to Marxist indoctrination centres at all? I'm Australian, British gentically and always wanted to move to Europe. That dream became negative when I began to learn about the decay of all Western Europe as well as land prices in Britain. Now I'm looking at France to live in the country to start a permaculture farm and raise dairy cows in a type of sanctuary for them. Love the French language, culture and beautiful girls too!

People have lived for thousands of years in these places. Now we have cell phones for about 25 years, and suddenly people can't live without it anymore and are even complaining of bad cell phone service. Come on! Stop complaining and just think! There are many solutions. Satelite phones, satelite internet, main lines. Or you can put an special antenna on the roof of your house for extended range. I hate that they are pushing for more and more cell towers all over the globe. At least France is still a country where you have many places where you are not being radiated 24/7 with electromagnetic radiation. I might even move to France for this reason.

If they have reception near cemetery they just have to install antenna on top of church tower and place repeater somewhere nearby.

Would be better for whole Europe to bring back conservative family France population next 50 years is 10milion people the villagers got the right to have clear water, electrici, Internet but government has to spend million of euro just because 5people live in village. Is better if the move near to a city France also has poor people who are not able to feed themselves

So ... it all boils down to bloody cell phones ?!? The bees are dying , in part because of cell phone tower electro-magnetic pollution ... Non Wifi Internet is however pretty useful ...

EveryDay You cannot seriously be blaming this state of affairs on Macron?! He’s been in office for all of two minutes. Perhaps you just needed any excuse, even if completely illogical, to have a poke at him...

I went to the top of Margalla hills on hiking and then I found out that that not only 3G was useable but 4G was at lightning speed. Please note, Margalla hills are located in poor Global South, Asia (Pakistan), yeah the same poor global south that was once perceived as inferior and born to the servitude of colonists!

French countryside must be more open for other Europeans, Russians or Ukrainians for example. We're all Christians and white peoples. Reach people don't want to move in countryside for living, others don't have a legal rights. Visa problems, right to work in France and so on

I'm a Mexican businessman and like rural France and planning on moving there, so that means we should not be welcome because I'm not white and not from the countries you mention?

We already have to deal with our own idiots, don't need to import you. I grew up in a small town in rural France, a doctor came from eastern Europe stayed ther less than a year before leaving because he couldn't find a place to open his office in a city less than 500 Km from the village ( just a first step for him he thought ). He was as racist as you are, even some of the localy known racists considered he was going a bit too far sometimes. Didn't heard from him since, some say he went back to his country. We had a liberal nurse in a nearby village, not white nor christian. worked hard, nice person and ( contrary to the previous case ) didn't complained about on standby work.
